View Full Version : Actions for more than one Image?

Hey Guys,

I have a little problem - I'm currently working on a shortfilm that has to be finished 09/12, so I'm quite in a hurry. Actually it's more of an animation - I'll render out single images and need to put the "Sepia Style" Action on them, so they look old fashinoned. It's a lot faster that way, since tweaking the shaders and the lighting would take too much time.

But the problem is that I have multiple images - let's pretend the animation lasts for 1.000 frames: I can't go in and tweak everything on a single frame basis, so I need a script or a .bat or whatever that does the job for me, basically it should:

1) Open an image (render0001.tga)
2) Apply an action (Sepia Style, for example)
3) Save and overwrite the old image
4) Open the next image (render0002.tga)
5) Apply the same action
etc. etc.

So, how'd I do that? Would be great if you guys could help me out!

Thanks in advance!

You can do this a number of ways, the quickest would be a combination of an Action that you create to achive the effect and a Batch Process (File > Automate > Batch...) that will allow you to apply the same Action to multiple files. I would suggest saving them to a seperate destination folder so that your originals are there if you need them later.

Hey Velk,

Thanks, now that's cool! I didn't know that Photoshop had an option to batch something without scripting or whatever - That's awesome!

Worked like a charm, thanks! :)

is there a way to apply your history settings like this? For example I have a ton of frames of an object infront of a green screen and lets just say i want to change in purple (just to make it easy) can I use this option to do that? i only see a few options to do here. Maybe I just need a script but I would like to see what you guys thought.

Mr Majestic - You want to change the green background to a purple? I'd advise you make sure your frames are backed up before messing around with actions!!!
I believe you could do something like this:

1, Make new action
2, select by colour range (select the green background then adjust slider to suit)
3, change foreground colour to the purple you want
4, flood fill

you could then run that on a folder of frames with the save and close command and it should do what you want. Can you expand on why you'd want to adjust your history settings with actions?

I guess i didnt explain it well i was just tryin to simplify it. Okay lets say i recorded a person walking around infront a green screen. I want to replace that background with a picture of a fantasy world okay? Is there a script out there for this, or an option built in to do somthign like this. I said history because i was asking if it could repeat the steps I did to change the background and repeat it. I realize that it would have to be a perfect one color green screen to work but Im just curious for future reference is all.

Yes you could replace the background but using actions will use the exact same settings which will (possibly) produce varying results per frame. If you wanted to do simple mockups it might prove useful.
One idea might be to could set it up for one frame then check the little 'toggle dialog' option so as you run through the action on a folder of frame you could change settings for each command and set it for the best results per frame? It's just a thought but the only way you'll truely know would be to test it out, please make sure your frames are backed up first though. If you think actions have potential for you workflow I'd advise you spend some time playing with them, you might find your efficiency jumps up 30%.

I had never used actions before and had just figured them out right before I saw your post. Umm I only did it with a green background and red circle and it work but since it was so simple I understand that on what i was talking about above Im sure there will be flaws and such, Ill look into what you said a little later, see what comes of it, thanks for the help.

No worries. If it doesn't go according to plan all is not lost. You can setup F keys to activate actions that you use alot. I use these both at work and at home and find they improve my efficiency no end. If you need to do processing and file format conversions they are a real time saver. Play around with them and if you run into problems someone on here is bound to have the answer! :)

Enjoy,
