View Full Version : active inactive keys basics
heynewt 11-30-2004, 08:19 PM Hi,
I've read the manual and been playing around with active/inactive keys. But there's something I can't figure out.
If I have an object where the motion graph shows an inactive key on the channel I'm working with, does that mean that there absolutely IS an active keyframe hidden somewhere on some other channel for that object? That's what I think the manual says.
The reason I ask is that I have that situation, but I've looked at every other channel on the object, and I can't find the active key. All the channels show an inactive key at a certain frame. So where's my active key?

I think you may have missed a couple if you looked at every other channel. ;) Just kidding - actually, I've run into that when baking keys. Try running the fb_keyReducer (http://www.zoogono.com/plugindetail.cfm?pid=11) plugin by FB_Turbine and see what happens.

Gary,
Wow, that was easy. That's a great plug-in. I just clicked on the button for delete inactive keys and bing, they're gone.
Thanks a million for the link, and for putting up with all my thrashing around in Messiah.

Thrash away ... it's actually doing me some good. You're actually bringing up a lot of the same issues I remember going through a while back and then some new ones too (like filtering of channels). A veddy good review. :)

Just as a sidenote: I think it is possible and OK to have fully inactive keys on all channels. Although new users often seem to have problems with them, the inactive keyframes are a cool concept IMO. Being able to toggle a complete or partial keyframe without loosing the values is often rather valuable to me to compare the influence of certain keys. If you want to get rid of a single key with all the invisible channels too, a rightclick on the "Delete" Button below the graph editor does the trick (with the key to delete active and/or - depending on your key editing settings - the timeslider too on that point in time)
Cheers!
