buying a legit copy of max

hey all,

i want to buy a copy of max, but i would like to find a deal on it. i have recently bought more copies of cinema 4d by contacting maxon, and asking them if the person who has it for sale is a registered user. they also transfer ownership. does discreet do something like this as well? are serials tied to a specific person?

i have heard that max is heavily abused when it comes to pirated copies, so i am wanting to make sure i buy a legitimate copy.

yeah you can buy max for a bargin price of $200 just look at the thread called "SCAM" thats the cheapest you will ever find it! (im joking , dont even consider this - just to make you aware of some of the stuff that goes on out there)

as pen said check out discreet site for resellers and maybe email discreet and ask about competitive upgrade on your cd4 licenece (not sure if they do competitive upgrades or not)

The best way to go about it is to follow What PEN suggested. I recently bought both Brazil and Max 7 for a really, really good price. The trick is to contact your nearest reseller. Often they can give you price breaks on the suggested retail price. Also keep your eye open for deals that tend to pop up every now and thenl this is how I got my copy. :)

Transferring of a Max license is very tricky. Only under certain circumstances can this work for you. Normally a license cannot be transferred from one individual to another unless something like bankruptcy somes into play. You have to contact Discreet or your reseller to get more info on your specific situation.

I work for discreet reseller in SF Bay Area. There are only 2 legal ways to buy a legit copy of 3ds max......

1. From Discreet Authorized Resellers. (usually at discounted price)
2. From Discreet Online Store. (Full price)

Any other way of buying 3ds max is illegal including ebay, or a used copy from someone.

Verma, I was going to get it through The O but I couldn't get the Max 7/Brazil deal that way so I had to go to elsewhere in order to get it. So I ended up ordering it from the Splutterfish website.

Yeah that was a good promo bundle, I remeber selling some myself.

By the way if anyone working for a company which has "Key Account Status" with discreet, you can qualify for something called "Employee purchase program". What this program is, your company will buy 3ds max for you at the key account discount price and you'd pay your company back. The key accounts are usually a major game company or a major effects house.

If you're a student anywhere, you can buy the educational license. You don't need to take a class specifically in the software. Of course, this isn't a commerical license, but it is a legal license and can be upgraded to a commerical license at a discount later.

I'm still a student, and thus I've got student licenses of Studio MX, Adobe CS, and 3ds Max 5&6, all for about a third the price of a commercial license of Max.

anyone know if i could upgrade a commercial version of plasma to max?

i won the plasma at flash forward SF a couple years ago and have not touched it. it's registered however, as discreet sent it to me.

Plasma is discontinued. Discreet did have a promotion one time about crossgrade from plasma to 3ds max for a very low price. I'm not sure if you can still get that offer. Talk to your local reseller in Portland and see if they can get an exception from discreet.
