http://forums.awn.com/images/icons/icon10.gif My first lip synch animation
Hey everyone. I followed a tutorial from Jason Osipa's book "Stop Staring" on lip synching the phrase "What am I saying here?" This is the first attempt I've made at lip synching and I wanted to know what you guys think. I added the squash and stretch on the face, the facial expressions and all of the acting on my own. I don't like how fast the head moves. I acted out the phrase and wanted to get the head movements to match when he says certain parts of the phrase, but it's so fast >_<. I also dont like how fast his hands move in the first five frames. In Maya it didn't go this fast. I wanted him to be in his first pose by the time he's finished saying "what", but the playblast file makes him move too fast. Does anyone know how to slow down the playblast thing in Maya? I had the scale in the playblast menu set to 1, since I figured 0.5 would make it go even faster...
Anyway, any and all critiques and comments are more than welcome. http://forums.awn.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Great start! For an animation critique, it would be best next time to take out all dramatic lighting - it is hard to make out the face or any sort of detailed animation you may have done. In regards to the playblast being too fast, what you are experiencing is actually Maya being too slow. To be more precise - your video card's real-time rendering is lagging because of the mesh + lighting. Playblast's time is perfect and it is what you want to use to double check the time you are experiencing when playing your timeline in Maya. Check for two things: make sure your animation within Maya is set to Real-Time (24/30/60fps), NOT Play All Frames. Secondly, I believe the rig you are using has a lo-rez version to animate with. The lighter you can make your geometry, the more accurate your real-time preview will be. If there is no lo-rez version, playblast often and make changes according to the playblast. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the response and advice Paul.yan!
Here it is with the dramatic lighting removed:
I put the geometry on low resolution and the problem was solved just as you said it would be. My next question is how can I slow down his first guesture? The voice says "what" in the first five frames, and I wanted him to make that guesture as he says "what", but five frames is obviously too fast. What should I do?
I also don't really like the process he goes through when he shifts weight from one leg to another, but I dont know exactly what's wrong with it.

A guy on AWN said I had overanimated this character, so I toned down the action with his head and arms. I've also made a close up of his face so everyone can see the lip sync better.

I appologize for if the links don't go through. Angelfire is being very difficult about this. I made a page that has links to all of the above files, but when I click on them an Angelfire screen comes up saying they dont allow downloads of certain file types. :banghead: To make things worse, yesterday Angelfire was obviously allowing people to use those links to view the files, since Paul.yan was able to view them and post a comment.
So, right now I am looking for a different free website place and as soon as I find one tht will allow me to link to my uploaded files, I'll post some new links to the animation.

Just to let you know, places like angelfire don't allow direct linking. Users must right-click "Save As.." or open it directly in their media app. That's how I was able to view it.

Phew, that's a relief, thanks Paul.yan. I know now to let people know to save the file in order to see it. :applause:

Hmm... the download didn't work for me. It said the site was either unavail or request not found. Maybe Geocities would work?

I appologise about that guys. I've left angelfire and now have a new website host, or whatever they're called. Anyway here's a link to the animation. This time it will work.
http://pichu10.tripod.com/animation.html It's the one called "What Am I Saying In Here?". You shouldn't have to save target as, since I set it up to open in a seperate window.
I just checked out your animation. the lipsynch is not very clear. You shouldn't animate the character at all, it's very distracting.
He's talking away from the camera half the time as well...
Just make a close up of the face

Thanks Mfs! :D I'll include a playblast of the face and post another thread here when it's up. In fact, that'll be the next thing that I do. I have a question. How can I make it so that the character is talking and acting at the same time? Should I just move the camera?

Okay, here's a link to the face close up (http://studentpages.scad.edu/~jcofer20/FaceCloseUp.avi) and here's a link to the previous animation at a different camera angle (http://studentpages.scad.edu/~jcofer20/WhatAmISayingHere5.avi).
