View Full Version : small texture size, too grainy

This is my first post, hello all, I'm Silentstep.

I'm working on a project, and I've been given texture sizes like 64, 128, and 256.
I dumped my uvs at 1024, made a texture, and dropped it down.
Now it all looks so grainy that I cannot see any of the detail.
Is there any method to make textures look good at low resolutions?

I'm using the unreal 2 editor so, no normal mapping capabilites as far as I know.

Thanks.

What program are you creating your textures with? If Photoshop, there's a couple different resampling methods you can use when downsizing textures...

You may also want to experiment with an unsharpen mask after downsizing...

How are you using the Unreal3 engine? The Unreal3 engine isn't available yet, and it does support normal mapping.

As for working at low rez textures, it's best to work close to the target resolution, no more than double it. When scaling down, use the unsharpen mask to reclaim some lost detail.

If you're working at 1024x1024, and scale down to 128x128, any detail LESS than 8 pixels wide will not be visible. It will affect the color of the pixel it gets scaled into, but it's detail will not show through.
