I read a bit ago that the archicad exchange plugin will need to be updated for archicad 9, is that right, and if so is there any news on its progress - any forecast release dates?

An update is in the works. A date is not yet set, this depends on the result of the betatesting.

cheers shrek, i'll look forward to it, Im using the archicad 8.1 version with 8.0 (educational version and our uni didn't get in the 8.1 update for some reason - getting 9 soon). The material exchanger is the only bit that works but that is much better than having no connection atall.
