View Full Version : How do I create "bouncing hair" ?
shogo2040 11-29-2004, 08:44 AM A character is walking. Everytime she lands a step, I want her hair to bounce. What various approaches should I try?
Thanks for any advice.

MotionDynamics with bones or flex curves or Softbodydynamics come to mind. But I found the collision detection not fully up to what I had hoped. So it may be the best to use MotionDynamics but limit their range with the IK-ranges so they never touch the body - if possible...
There may be other opinions though :)
Cheers!

I tried Soft Body Dynamics by applying this effect on the named surface. The hair looked like water! hahahahaha!!
A few notes on my character:
1. The hair is in a separate layer which came from the same .lwo file as the character did.
2. I loaded each layer (character and hair) into messiah one at a time instead of all together.
3. My setup rig is only on my character. The hair has no bones.
4. The hair is positioned on top of the head and moves with the character through hierachy.
5. The hair isn't particle (of course). Its polygons with a transparent UV texture map. Polygons for the hair are set to be double sided.
So currently as she walk, her hair does go along with her. So I'm happy I got that far. Now the bones from the body don't pull on the hair when she moves her arms, and there's no need for me to add extra holder bones and metaeffectors to stop the body bones from influencing the hair since the hair is in a separate layer.
Thanks Thomas_Helzle for your advice. I will research on MotionDynamics with bones.

For reference on softbody settings you might want to check the tia rig provided by Taron in the files that come withmessiah. He's got some good motions on that hair.
Dynamics too will work well, but there's no easy preset-and-you=ve-got-hair just yet.

Ah, yes very good - I completely forgot one of my all time favorites. Tia is cool!
The "Mask" file is also cool although it isn't exactly hair...
Cheers!
P.S. Remember you can have multiple messiah windows open at the same time for reference and copy and paste between them!

The Tia sample helped a little. But the hair is too soft / bouncy when i followed that example.
I think i'm going to try something different again. Going back to MotionDynamics with bones, is there a tutorial out there for this effect? Or an example? I Googled and Yahooed without any luck.

I think they changed some settings of the dynamics engine between m:s 1.5 and 2.0, therefore some sample scenes with dynamics are rather jittery and don't look realistic at all. Try to change the middle value of the 'Struct/Shear/Flex' settings of the 'Soft_Body_Dynamics' item (which is parented to the 'Hair' nulll) from '1.02' to '1.005' or '1.0', that should help.
