View Full Version : Max 5 Render Crashes.
tAstyBITs 08-27-2002, 09:41 PM I'm getting crashes after renders. Some people are having the same problems and are posting on the Discreet forums.
I was hoping to find out if anyone else has had render crashes?
I using Windows 2000 SP3.
I find the crash can be subdued by activating a exposure control. Which worked until last night when I started to get crashes with high poly sence renders.
Discreet says is a memory issue but I get the same bug on two different brand new machines both with win 2k SP3.

There are a lot of quirky reasons you could be getting a crash, but you'll to give us more info.
Is your render crashing on completion of a frame? In the middle? During geometry preperation?
Can you isolate it to certain plugins? There are some plugins out there that don't seem to play nicely together. Often when I get scenes acting really kludgey, I try to find out if it's a plugin that's causing the problem. Usually just commenting out certain plugins from the plugin.ini is a first step. Other times I've had to delete my 3dsmax.ini file (some tools write to it and corrupt it) before it would work properly again. Then if that doesn't work, I'll merge the trouble file into a clean scene. This seems to solve a lot of problems when scenes become really heavy and hard to manage. I know, it sucks...

It always crashes just after the last render line is complete. Never part way.
Once I get the crash I always get it. I can reboot max and render a sphere and it's fine add a defalt texture to it and max crashes. If I add a exposure control setting in Environments it will work again. In fact I was making sure I added a exposure contol setting and I was fine until last night when I tried to render a seen with 1/2 million polys.
On the discreet sight they said it might be a memory issue. One guy replied saying he checked his dimms with a memory check program as suggested and he was fine and he still got the crashes.
It's getting really bad I can't render stuff.
The problem might be realated to SP3 for win 2k.
I'm wondering if anybody with SP3 has problems with render crashes?

Works OK here. Network rendering works, too. On 15 boxes. Max 5, SP3, OGL viewport driver on Quadro2 Pro. Try switching viewport drivers just in case.

Sounds to me like its not the render that is crashing but the writing of the output file. What are you saving your renders as.? try a different one.
If your not saving and its only going into the virtual buffer then make sure you have enough space on you root drive as there is a temp file stored there when you render an image. I just did a job for print (10k * 8K) and it was storing a whopping 250mb tmp file in the autobak dir. It also chewed up all the ram and virtual memory and hence crashed max.
Maybe this is your problem.?

I'm not saving to a file though I think I'm going to try that.
Try opening a file rendering a few shots, then open another file and render some more. Get a few complicated scene renders make sure you have textures on your objects. It can take a little jumping around from scene to scene before max fails. Once it fails open max make a sphere and render it it should work then add a defalt texture to the sphere and render it it should crash.
Also I noticed activating 'Display Reflectance & Transmittance Information' can be a factor in making it crash.
It crashes when max just finnished rendering whatever max is doing then I'm not sure.
Are there any memory settings in Windows 2k that I can play with?
