Title: Fat Fish On The Prowl
Name: Dieter Schmidt
Country: Netherlands
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop

I did the fat fish model a while ago and I decided to put it in a little underwater-scene, mainly because I could use the excercise dealing with environment-effects (fog, volume-light), dof, and particle-systems.

The whole scene is done in max with xdof used for the dof-effect. Textures are done in photoshop. A 1024*768 scanline render takes about 35 minutes.

Curious as to what you think. click the image for a larger render :)

Looks nice,
but I would like to mention improvements too ;)

Nearer objects are over blurred.
Shade of water surface on the fish skin is very sharp and thin, make it little thick and spreaded.

Overall it looks nice though.

Regards.

I really like this now but for some reason I didn't at first. I think it took me a while to get used to the strange angle at which the shot is taken at, but now I think this angle adds to the "mood".

I am still unsure about the texture on your fish, I think he should be smoother and shinier. At the moment I think he is made out of a "sponge" material.

Hope the comments help.

Great composition. At first it didn't seem too interesting, but once I noticed the eyes and followed them I saw the little fish and the whole piece came together! Well done!

Thanks for the replies guys. Glad you like it. I worked on it a long time but I'll think about some of the suggestions.

Larry, the fish is much shinier and fish-like than comes off in this scene. It might be the lighting/angle.

Virtualeye: I'm afraid if I blur the caustics they'll dissapear altogether. I like the look as they are, even if it's not totally realistic (nothing in this scene is:)
