Really great start man!!!Looking huge and the coloring is great so far.
Still got a little too much this starwars feeling about the helmet.Maybe it's his color or the glasses he's watching through, don't know.
But maybe you should put some more options on his helmet or another color for it.
Anyway great pic!!!

hi - this is excellent! I like the point of view - really feels quite exciting. No real criticism, except you've got to make sure you tie in this more individual level with the 'grandness' of the challenge title. But I can see how it might. look forward to more.

Ok i switched the angle, now im going for a profile sort of view, to show the whole outside battle..the enemy ships (for now lol) are going to be all those X's and the hero ships will be alll the U's..
ill switch the coloring on the visor, to take that imperial feel away heh =} but what else should I add to make this more epic? So far I have the main blockaid ship moving through to his left, and a couple more on the ground, the spire in the background, the planet, and lots and lots of attackerships..
=) what else?

i like more the second color image,i mean with the pilot more oblique on the image plan,'cos the planet in front of the ship, is more "alive" than the other, and is nearer...btw about coloring, i like a lot in all images, maybe some backlightning from the cockpit on pilot's shoulders?

Wow! Thanks for posting in my thread -- I thought I'd return the favor and I'm amazed at the level of detail you've got. Beautiful touch that his helmet is decorated -- the snake eyes and the poem say much about his attitude and experience. This is gonna rock, but don't get so bogged down in details that you don't finish the whole thing. There's still miles to go before you sleep!

Great work! Here's my .02- right now you're painting has so many bright spots, it's like a sundae with 500 cherries on top. every bit is beautifully rendered, but you might want to choose an area to be the brightest. The planet naturally is very bright, but so are the instruments and (I'm sure) space battles. I would suggest darkening the cockpit- give his instruments a dimmer glow- think of a car driving at night- the dashboard is meant to be seen but not overpower the driver. Use the dim lighting and the light of an explosion to be what illuminates your pilot (or you could use the harsh light of the planet- with sharp shadows). Remember you've still got to cram in that battle, so think about what you want to be the focal point. The planet should probably be the brightest- unless it's the dark side but whatever you decided just lavish the same care on the values and colors of the piece as you have on the overall composition and detail.
The great thing about digital is that it's easy to try lots of things quickly once the basic painting is there. Hope this is useful, and keep going!

Can't wait to see the battle in front of him. The only thing that bothers me is how far the pilots head is turned, just seems painful and a little too obvious. If you want to have this type of a pose why not give it some motivation? Have a ship whizzing past him overhead so he can be reacting to it. Have him signaling his gunner to do something. The "Top Gun" pose seems too self-indulgent.
The rendering is great though, really coming along beautifully. Great work... I am looking forward to see it evolve!

Wow this is starting to get amazingly detailed. I love that and I hope you don´t lose the will to continue like that!!! Great job so far. All the cockpit instuments are great. And you even have a compass or a directional gyro :) i wonder what for but maybe you can fly the thing in the atmosphere of planets too. I love it when art makes me think like that. Please continue and good luck. If you have any aircraft related questions I can help. I don´t think you´ll need it but anyway.

Very good idea to make a view inside the cockpit !
The ambience is good and you have the sense of details.:scream:
However, I think that the head of the pilot shouldn't be turned so much : it's impossible... I suppose you did it in order to show better the helmet, but personnaly, I don't mind if we see it less, it will be more realistic.
Good luck !
adonihs
12-03-2004, 10:01 PM
True, it even hurts my neck to turn that much. And I wont deny, I did it to show off the helmet ='[, but if I repaint it, itll take more time (which I kind have) but Ireally want to explore the battle too...so Im afraid this will have to stay, unless theres some way I can get it to look differnt from changing minimal things! Throw your suggestions at me =]

BTW I havent updated the pic with what I just said above yet!!! but I will tonight once I render it all together...I still have so much more to go...
BUT TO EVERYONE ELSE, GOOD LUCK =] i will keep updating with your thoughts!

hey mate, im sorry i hadnt seen your work earlier, its really amazing. Esspecially the amount of detail you are able capture for the cockpit, its very well done due to the extent that, for someone who would have no clue about the insides of aircraft it seems like a very believeable portrayal of what you might find.
The emphasis that you have placed on the pilot is very overpowering, he/she/it looks like an awesome character. I dont necessarily think its a bad thing that the character takes up much of your composition along with the cockpit. Given the kind of position that your showing your pilot in, from what i can see you have a real good potential to expand on the idea.
The image atm looks like hes turning to look over his shoulder either took look over in satisfaction of having destroyed some collosal spaceship or even a planet. You could extend your canvas off to the right of your composition and perhaps create a panorama of a completely anihilated battle field and this "super warrior/pilot" is the only survivor from all the carnage and hes looking at all of the destruction he/she/it has created with great happiness.
Thats one scenario, but i definately think you should expand on the image in some way, as great as all of your current elements are it maybe needs something else. Thats just my 2 cents, i hope ive given you some good input. Thanks again for looking at my thread, i will definately be following your progress mate. Have a great week mate and keep up the amazing job.

Wow what an awesome comment, Sketchfiend!!! Thanks!! And not to sound dumb, but did you see the tiny battle pic I put up? Hopefully you dont think this is the only thing! =) It's going to be a full fledged battle by the time im done..both physically on the picture, and mentally in my head lol. Wow so many generous comments =) Thank you guys so much, im taking everything you guys say as crits into my picture to make it better, thanks a lot guys! =) Ive also fixed the neck, head, perspective on the right hand switches and knobs, and his helmet around, AND! To make sure it was correct, I took that pic of myself doing what he was doing and overlayed it, eyes where his eyes go, my mouth where his is, etc. Everything fits so far..so hes not dying lol.
Now remember, this is but a tiny crop of my full pic...if I can (i dont know if youre allowed or whatever) but can I post detail shots to?

And youre totally right, if someone (like myself) can jump into your thread and get the idea of the picture in their heads in the same/similar way that you picture it then you are obviously doing something right.

I like the coloring and detal so far, but there are a couple of problems. First off, the planet needs to be rounded off at the side, it isnt completely circular. Secondly, I feel for some reason that the fighters should be at a different angle to each other. The way the engine streaks are positioned against the dark background, it doesnt give it a very dynamic feel for some reason.
Or you could add more fighters. Either would work.
On the brighter side though, the detail on everything is amazing, especially in the cockpit and on the uniform. You've got every little bit down. I also like the texture on the planet, looks great.
Freefall Alpha
12-04-2004, 08:58 PM
i love the personal human touches like the photos and messages. as someone who's just looking at the image for the first time, i'm not sure what the second pilot's doing. he seems to be looking the wrong way and not really interacting with the pilot, is he dead? if so, you could maybe make it more obvious on the instrument panel - just because you don't want people to get the wrong idea and think you've done a bad job!
personally, i don't think you need the rest of the picture. having the guys so close to you in the composition really draws the viewer in, and all the detail would be lost in the larger comp. also, having this section int he bottom right corner just doesnt look right to me if ou're going to do the whole huge image - it makes the overall composition look fussy; I would keep it more or less as it is now.
Just some thoughts.

rodrigogua: Hey! Thanks for the comment!, yeah I totally agree with you. Without all the personal items, theyre just pilots ready to kill. Once I first put that pic of the little girl, people all spotted it out first and said, "You need more of that." And I thought, of course they do, I mean, youre out there for what can be months and have no communication with your family, so what would you bring? And I thought, id bring personal items, or have my kids write all over my damn ship! lol, so thanks for the comment bud!
draco_1967: Same thing bro, thanks! =)
sidchagan: Yeah I totally agree with you, but then again, the picture is 1.) Just a crop so far, and 2.) Not finished. So give me more time! lol =) And the planet, yeah I know, im doing the picture in giant crops, bc the original is too huge, so I had to remake the side of the planet again, dont worry though, I dont leave things half assed!! Thank you!! =)

Hey Dan,
Just dropping in to throw in my two-cents. I like the progress so far. the tiny details such as the DVD player, the iPod and the pictures within the cockpit are just tongue-in-cheek-brilliant!
I'm concerned about the way the image is composed; spending so much time on details down to the lines in gauges and meters would seem like you're drawing the focus on the fellows in the cockpit and not the battle in the background. I guess it's the same ol' comment/crit I have with you - "Where's the focal point?"
The lost one,
- Zach

It looks great, I like your idea (the ghost ship), very interesting. Also the details on helmets and in the spaceship.

Dang, you've been busy! My head now hurts from the extreme zoom-out, from deep in the cabin suddenly to this huge wide angle with so much going on. Anyhow, looks great, it's definately epic in scope now! Can't wait to see the refinements on the Ghost Ship...

Markski: Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the details and how my arm is offically broken! =O
walrus: Haha thanks! Sorry I gave you a headache =[ it hurts me too .
Climax: You too my friend! Yeah, there are so many great artists here and challenges that its hard to keep up!! But thank you =)
Jezzarts: Yeah sorry I cant post the whole concept, it has to stay under 150 kb! :( The pic is huge though..so don't worry, theres a lot to it! :)
Squibbit: Dont let it hold you back, get drawing then and create something huge! Thanks!!
Sorry I don't know if ill be able to update for a day or two, I got the stomach flu..so I feel really crap..it took me like 20 mins just to write this. :( =) But ill come back!!

hi, looking interesting! I'd suggest, as your dealing with such a large complex scene, to really try and get a sense of flow (or two flows colliding) in the composition. I feel a bit of coherence would help - may just require a couple of laser beams arching across here or there or something... anyway, good stuff

I love looking at your thread. It seems at this point that most of the ships are only 2 sizes It’s hard to focus on the piece because it is very busy. Maybe having more sizes of ships preferably a few that are much closer to help with the business and focus. I know you want it to be a big battle I just think it's hard to focus on whats going on. Just an opinion! :)
Lookin good

BlueEyeLizard: Thank you!! Glad you like it! Well as you can see in the quick doodle, im going to have more hero ships on his right, maybe making hand signals or whatever. Then im going to have other enemy ships flying towards them, which are a size bigger then theres, then federation ships in the background, and a space station or two. :) Im taking your opinon into consideration for sure! =)
Bolchover: Hm thats a great idea! As you can see I have a rail gun shot from the federation ship above firing into the ghost ship, would you mean having lasers shot from our hero ships in front of us? Because I could try and work something into that also! And as for the colliding, do you mean other ships? Thanks for the feedback too! =)

Very creative work. Great imagination. I love the fact that there is a cockpit view included in this piece. Nicely done so far. Keep at it.

great stuff, lots of details! Look like this will be a very powerfull pic at the end. I have just one suggestion, to bring more depth to this pic with bright and dark.. saturated and desaturated elements in this image... it looks all the same now, spaceships in the far distance with the same light power as those in first plan. Otherwise a very nice entry!
