I have this Dual PIII 1 GHZ, 1 GB SDRAM, and 4X AGP GF2 64 MB.
Running MAX 3 and 4 on WIn2k pro + Service Pack II.
I should run Max with open GL, direct 3d or Software Z Buffer ?
If I run open GL , what is the setting I should made, so MAX will be faster. Do I need to change the display property ?
**What is the different if Monitor run on 60 Hz and 75 Hz ? Sorry this question shoul'n be ask here.

Go for OpenGL or Direct3D, not Software, software will basically force you video card not to use it's hardware acceleration, on simple scene you won'T notive a difference, but, beleive me, on complex ones, you will a lot.
Direct3D can work fine but never did to me.

75Hz is better for your eyes, although, 85Hz is even better, depends if your monitor can give it. Mine does only 75 at 1600x1200, resolution I use when work in MAX.

There are times when the Software Z-buffer will outperform OpenGL or Direct3D. This is particularly when you have a dual CPU system (it's multithreaded) and you're dealing with massive scene geometry. I do lots of particle work and there are times when I'll temporarily switch over to SZB because it can display pixel sized particles in the viewports and OpenGL particles are much larger. This gets really important when you're trying to see how a complex system clumps together.

From my experience Direct3D outperforms OpenGL in MAX only in Wireframe mode, with the inverse being true in Shaded mode.

Thanks for rapid reply, and suggestions.
Why 75 Hz is better for the eyes ? And will it speed things up , or slow it down.
Any setting I need to made in MAX for openGL, such as mapping download size....etc, also any setting I need to look in the display property ?
What about the display aparture size in the BIOS ? can i put it 256 ?

That is the monitor refreshing rate of the vertical retrace. It's better because the image gains fluidity and stability(it refreshes 75 times per second instead of 60).It has no relationship with the speed of the computer

no...

but one thing u might notice that sometimes happens when going to opengl is your vertex size will literally be 1 pixel... just change in preferences rollout

even 75hz isn't good for eyes. Personnally, all my station/screens are 85hz only.
for drivers, yeah I can tell that on dual CPU 1Ghz, I work too in SZ with SynerguIII, it is faster than openGL. Only maxtreme go faster, but allow only one session of max, so hemm :/
BUT, on my personnal machine, a dual 500, my GeForce256 is faster into OpenGL (yeah old machine hey !) with lastest nvidia drivers and some good tweaking on drivers under max.

I am using MSI GeForce 2 MX400 64MB, how do I 'tweak' it in the MAX ?
