Hi guys, i'm started working on for my final year project university, a short film with length around 2 minutes entitled 'ANIMA'.

here i first upload some concept design of my short animation:

the following is the main concept board for ANIMA:

http://www.geocities.com/pumpkin_life/cb001.jpg

the following is the set background of the animation:

http://www.geocities.com/pumpkin_life/anima_bg01.jpg

the character design of linda the girl, and her transformed father 'TEDDY'...

http://www.geocities.com/pumpkin_life/anima_char01.jpg

now just stated on the modelling stage of the character Linda:

http://www.geocities.com/pumpkin_life/wire_linda01.jpg

The story is pretty simple, is about a girl who killed her father and turn him into a teddy bear called 'ANIMA' with the help of the toy machine (the big machine above).

The 80% of the animation is planned to be focused on the transformation sequence of the dying father into a teddy. Pretty much like the sequence found in 'AKIRA' by Kastuhiro Otomo.

The concept art is very nice, especially the individual girl concept. The story sounds rather interesting, but I doubt I'd spend 80% of the time on the transformation, since for a 2 minute animation, that's leave 24 seconds for the rest.

The proportions of the girl and her dress on the sketch were also more appealing than those on the current version of the model, so I'd personally try to immitate those more.

But it's a very nice looking project with an interesting concept. I'm, currently at a similar if not a big further stage of production of my short, so I'm interested to see how this one shapes up. Good luck! :)

also started working on the Toyland (exterior), the place they lives. the design of the Toyland (exterior) is based on the shape of teddy bear, but rather bizzare for its details and features.... still working on it

I have to agree with the others. This is looking good, especially the concept. Your sure to have a somewhat good result with a good concrete background like history and concept.

The 3D girls is really good too. Allthough she looks evil, or maybe thats just for the rest position in the face? Good job. I look forward to see the progress:)

Hi azozel, i used Maya, rendered with Mental Ray with FG and the help of dirtmap...for the fur and hair, i used software rendering for faster rendering time.....

Hi guys, one of my fren is helping me on the music part..... i'm currently facing some problem on rendering.... one of the scene where the toys form into the teddybear shape.... the visibility animation of the toys seems to be problem for MentalRay batch render... the toys are still visible after i animate its on/off channel.... now i'm trying my best to fix the problem....

Kizza
03-09-2005, 01:14 AM
I had the same problem and I have a suggestion. What I did, and it's a bit of a pain, is this:
We rendered a different batch starting at the time visiblilty changes. We had to do 3 batches but it was all good.

Unfortunatly if you have objects constantly switching on and off that would be a problem.

Frames 1-70
visible = true
Frames 71-90
visible = false
Frames 91-120
visible = true

So we just rended them seperate. 1-70, then 71-90, then 91-120.

Man, that hair on the girl is crazy! How'd you do that? Is that Maya hair?

Great stuff!

future14
03-30-2005, 01:20 PM
Hi the_podmani've tried to use maya hair to execute the hair for the girl, but it's too heavy for my 'snail' machine, so i decided to use Shave&Haircut for that, it's light and easy to work with.... especially when comes to simulating the motion of the hair....

That was one seriously great final product, there. It was short, but very impressive!

For codecs, why not give "bink" a try? It creates very small files with DVD-like quality. Only works with windows, though. www.radgametools.com (http://www.radgametools.com)
Read the FAQ for instructions on how to create a self-executable movie file.

hi the_podman, THANX for the support man, so glad u like it. BTW, i'm going to try the coded u recomended... i did try with DIVx and 3vix, but still big size, hope that the BINK can make it better....:D

Great! Let me know how it turns out.

Here's a quick tut:

1. I would recommend creating(if you don't already have one) an uncompressed quicktime of the project since bink works best with .mov files. If you're using After Effects, set it to Uncompressed "Animation" at 30fps or 24fps(whichever you did the animation on).

2. You should have a .mov file that's around 4 or 5 gig(it won't play very well in realtime at this stage)

3. Launch "radvideo.exe", select the .mov and click the "bink it" button. For high motion, I would up the data rate to around 500000 bytes. Don't forget the check the "compress audio" or it won't have any sound(you can also mix this in later).

4. You should now have a new "yourmovie.bik" file. Now launch "radvideo.exe" and select the "yourmovie.bik" and click "Advanced Play". This is where you create a self executable file with bink player embedded into the movie so anyone can view the movie, even if they don't have radgametools installed. You can set the resolution, full screen, looping, etc.
Just click "Make EXE" and you're all done!

If BINK doesn't work out, another excellent compressor is SORENSON SQUEEZE, however, that one is not free.

Hi.
Technically you are good and the future is bright.

Some of the negative thing I feel is the lack of originality judging by the influence of Otomo & Tanaka. Even your anima words is a copy of akira words.

The clamping of the head. The skin and backgroud colour scheme.Basically you collected you idea from them. Another things is your dialogue. People love their mother tongue. The fact that your client ,geographical location, cultural and etnic situation and you choose a japanese language, i think it is weird especially people watch it with big question mark. To me it is not special at all.

Don`t get me wrong. Its your film after all.

dinodog-jr
04-07-2005, 08:15 AM
Well, i watched it twice. I dun seriously watch it to find broken details or mistaken. I am not good at it. I watch a short film for fun. This is merely a perfect one For FIRST SHORT CLIP!

1. Why the driller dun grind out blood on the man's head? MAybe it is hard to render & running out of time.
2. I would like the last scene is the Zoom in on Little gal face + Angel Bear face. It will be a beautiful screen capture & memorized by viewer. I know u wanna maintain somekind of "Starting till Ending" = Same view concept.
3.It is obviously to be influenced by Otomo, AKIRA. I felt dat at the process of workload. SOmehow, when i watched the fINAL clip. It didn't actually turn out to be AKIRA wannabe. Maybe the color sense or orange reddish & TITTLE font sending the pulse to "sensitive" viewer.
SO, DUN WORRY. U r original at the storyline ...SCARY OPENING TOWARDS THE CUTE ENDING
SOmehow, could be say another weirdo combination of Tim Burton + Otomo Art..hehe
4. Yeah, why japanese voice? I wonder how u do dat too..hehe...Try to love our mother tounge -CHINESE or ENGLISH(For International Viewer).. I know it will sounds cute in Japanese, somehow Let the Japanese do dat. We are PURE CHinese after all. haha...
5. hOPEFULLY U will bring us More and more unique short clip. U r one of my remarkable malaysian artist now!

Id comment but when I click your link the following:

Angelfire does not allow direct linking
from offsite, non-Angelfire pages,
to files hosted on Angelfire.
This practice of 'remote linking' reduces
our ability to serve out the homepages
of our members quickly and efficiently.

magnumstar: unless you actually feel bad about angelfire and their bandwidth, I have a solution. All you gotta do is go to http://www.angelfire.com/dc2/pumpkinlife/and then click the link back here. That way Angelfire goes "he has been to an angelfire page, better let them have it"

I really liked the film. The animation needed a little polish in a few spots but the modelling, lighting and cinematography were great. I loved that it was framed tall instead of wide.

Also I think it's great you did it in Japanese, I don't know why people are so protective of their language. If it sounds cuter in Japanese and that's how it's supposed to sound, then the sensible thing is to do what makes the film better. I did a film in semi-french because English didn't suit it at all. I don't speak french but that didn't matter it improved the film and that's the important thing. What's the best way to tell the story? Whatever it is, do it.

WOW..... thnx for all the valuable critics man:D

sorry guys, i've just finished my final exam last few days, and was busy with some tape conversion and graduation stuff....

capirossi n dinodog_Jr : well basically it's true that i got the idea for this animation after i watched AKIRA and bought the book by TANAKA ( 2 years ago ).... and i was so sure that i would gonna do something like what they did... well majority environment design idea i got referenced from Tanaka's Cannabis Works... well the main thing is to make it looks messy yet detail (this is what i thought ), especially the design for the big machine (ANIMACHINA) in the workshop, i combine it with some cuteness elements, so i added the teddy bear ( since the story is about making teddy bear ). Well for the color scheme, i think i make it that way not because of AKIRA or TANAKA, just because i was trying to make it looks like some oldies kind of pop feel ( or mayb i failed ), so it's green-orangy..... As for the animation part, there are many lacking stuff and bad conti.... which i hope to fix them all after all the submission, especially the bleeding part when the PAPA's head is been drilling by the machine; the starting animation when PAPA walking out; explosion of the TOYLAND and when the chemical X blow out.........; the lightning FX; and some of the sound FX stuff and blu blu blu.....(btw thnx for suggesting those weakness :D)

for the language part, the reason using japanese is not because to make the animation looks special :) just as what Kizza said, i'd tried with mandarine, chinese, and even english, but it just couldn't get what i feel like.... at the end, i chose jap, and luckly my coursemate who has her sweet little voice to help me up.... anyhow, i'm really glad to hear bout those critics and suggestion:bounce:

Kizza: thnx for helping me to provide the information bout the bad bandwidth of the angelfire.....i'm trying best to look for new FREE hosting..... thnx for supporting me all the while, i'll be fixing all the bad elements to make it better. :bounce:

the_podman : thnx for the codex dude:D.....i'd converted to bink as what u showed.... it's really great.........but unfortunately, my free hosting not support up the 70+ mb upload.... but the refined version of DIVx and Xvid will be up soon....

thnx for all the support man:)..... without helps and suggestion from u guys, my work wouldn't be completed man!

Hey, no problem. Try messing with the bitrate setting on the BINK compressor. What you can do it BINK the BINK file. You can re-bink the compressed version by loading in the 70MB bink file and lowering the bitrate by half of what you had. I managed to get my .bink demo reel from 70MB to 35MB that way.
