I am modeling a robot in polygons. How can I make some of the edges sharper than the others. I know I could use subdivisions and use the full crease or partial crease. But is there a way to do it without converting to subd's?
Thanks

Use the cut faces or split poly tool to split on both sides of the edges you want sharper. If you model using smooth proxy, you can experiment with splits on the low poly cage and view the results on the smoothed mesh.

theres a rule of three. if you have three edges very close togeather they create a very sharp edge. 2 is less, you get the idea and try experimenting witht he spacing of the edges from one another as well

You could also use Edit Polygons>Normals>Soften/Harden. Then in the Polygons>Smooth options check Keep Hard Edges. Although this way its either on or off with no adjustment.

OR

Use Bevel.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was hopeing it was as easy as it is in 3ds. I am going to try the rule of 3. That would be alot of splitting if you have a complex model.
Thanks again.

as for the splitting part thats where MJPolyTools comes in. google it and it should be the first hit. follow the install instructions and the main ones used are edge loop split and select ring. slect ring selects a continuous ring of edges, and edgle loop split works like this > select one edge that you want to split across and slect edge loop split. since it splits at .5, not sure if you can change this, i just keep splitting till i get it close to the edge that i need, and then select the loops that you just made and dont need with select loop, and then just edit polygons delete edge. i dont know if this is a noobish method but hey.. im startin out too :P
