I'm trying to network render between an XP pro computer and an XP home computer with 3dsmax 7. I have set up a directory stored in my shared documents folder, with all permission on full, that holds the texture maps and the rendered frames. The only problem is, neither computer can access the network mapped drive when saving a file. (not from max, photoshop, anything) they each access the network drive (X:\) from windows explorer without a problem, and files can be opened, but nothing can be saved, it says i dont have permission, even from the pc which the X drive is on. of course i'm administrator on both pc's. Firewalls are all off. Anyone know enough about windows networking to help me out?

thanks

It's possible that the naming conventions are incorrect.

Here is what I do:

1. Make a shared folder.
2. Put all scene files, and textures in the shared folder
3. Configure paths on a machines for network rendering so that the shared folder is in a Universal Naming Convention (for example \\computerName\projectfolder (file://\computerNameprojectfolder) )
4. Launch the Manager on one machine.
5. Launch the Queue manager on the same machine.
6. Launch server on all machines that should do the rendering.
7. Launch 3DS MAX.
8. Enable network rendering.
9. Make sure the rendered files are saved with the Universal Naming Convention (for example \\computerName\projectfolder (file://computerName/projectfolder) )
10. Hit render

That should do it.

I'm using the approach of mounting my shared folder as a network drive precisely so i can have a quick way to create a UNC system for my map and output files. The save file dialog in max will always put the local directory down as the filepath even if i navigate to the location thru my network places. I can get it to work by manually typing in the UNC path in front of the filename when i save it, but that's lame.

Is there some setting to make MAX to use only UNC paths? i couldn't find anything beyond manually adjusting paths in the Configure Paths dialog.

I guess i'd really like to understand why mounting a network drive amounts to uselessness if i somehow don't have permission to save to it.....

thanks for replying
