Just curious because I am building a mini-remote control car for my 3d class. I was wondering how the intermediate and advance ppl of the 3d world would build rims. I was going to build the tire itself and the rim itself in two layers but decided against. So now i'm building them together as a continuous mesh. Your thoughts? thanks for ur replies

well i'd build it in 2 separate layers... trying to line up the tread lines w/ the rim geometry is a big pain (assuming you are using subdiv). The tread pattern doesn't need to be subpatched and can be pretty poly heavy as it is. Rims are easy enough as long as you plan right when you make your initial cylinder (so you have the right amount of sides for your spokes)

Create a ball, delete half of it to create the dish shape for the rim. Select the polys that you dont want to be part of the rim and delete them. Use smooth shift, super shift or extender plus to give the rim some thickness. :)
