There's lots of tutorial links here in the 3ds Max reference section. A really good tutorial that I have found useful is Michel Roger's site (http://mr2k.3dvf.net/frameset.htm). Easy to follow step by step tutorials that will get you started off on the right foot. :)

i have to agree with Kamikazee89, the joan of arc tutorial is quite difficult for a beginner. there are a couple of video tutorials that i would recommend:-
1) 3dbuzz.com, modeling an alien video tutorial- free
2) 3d-palace.com, troll video tutorial-free
3) lynda.com, modeling in 3ds max, this video tutorial shows u how to model a complete character, polymodeling for the body, modeling with splines for the head. it also contains a car modeling tutorial using nurbs. if you can afford it, i highly recommend this cd. learned a lot from it.
4) poopinmymouth.com, character modeling video tutorial- free (slightly advanced, i would try the others first)

Hi there i've just started modeling too..i've learnt that u must have patience n do not expect real good results from your first model..u gotta practice n u'll see wat u are doing taking shape slowly..http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Yes certainly your first models will be a little wierd. This means you have a good eye which is a great start! Most character modelling tutorials have very good geometry principals and that is what you are after mostly. You can follow a tute for the strategy and put in your own features.
If you do it very often there will come a moment when the 'light comes on'.
Keep it up it is very rewarding.
