View Full Version : Network rendering with MA as plugin
DMack 11-25-2004, 05:24 PM Hmmmm...Another request for the guys at PMG (I'm sure they have loads of time on their hands ha ha ha). It would be seriously good to have MA act like other plugins in terms of network rendering.......I know you can bake out mdd's etc.....but sometimes for tests, I want to use the network and NOT have to have the actual programme installed on every machine! - Not very practical....With more and more people coming to MA for Char animation from LW....it would be great to get ths one done...... How about it Lyle?...Just copy the .p file to the LW plugins network drive and hey presto...linked files can be rendered across the network!
Thanks.

You don't have to have it installed on every machine. It works just like the other LW plug-ins, which is that it will work on network rendering as long as the other machines are mapped the same way as the LW config says they are. In other words, if your LW config says that messiah is located in c:\Program Files\pmG\messiah, then all of the network machines need to be able to find messiah in c:\Program Files\pmG\messiah too.

I use it with a reworked config with no problems - all machines use the same installation. The only thing is that the plugin has to remain in the same folder structure, so it can find all the files in the subfolders. But you can easily have it as
\\Server\renderstuff\pmg\messiah...
just edit the Lightwave config file as needed.
If you are asked for some of the msvcrt dlls then just copy those to every machines System32 folder - they are c library dlls from microsoft compilers...

Hmmmmm, I've placed a copy of the messiah folder on a network drive (the one I use for LW plugins etc) and re-added the plugin, so it looks for it on Z: then ...copied some dll's across that screamernet asked for...but now I'm getting the following error (appears in the screamrnet box)
'import site' failed; use -v for traceback
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<string>", line 1, in ?
ImportError: No module named os
File "<string>", line 1
sys.path.append("Z:\Plugins\messiah\modules\")
^
SyntaxError: EOL while scanning single-quoted string
What am I doing wrong? Could it be that I didn't install LW on the server, merely copied across the messiah folder (true cowboy style!)
Any ideas Thomas...or anyone else?

Just guessing here: Do you use any python/AutoRigII stuff? This looks suspiciously like python. If you don't use it in your scene, try removing the "messiahPython.mp" plugin from your plugins folder.
Since it isn't really finished yet anyway, I have removed it completely.
Good luck and keep us posted about your findings. I no longer use LW that much so I may not have the latest experience :-)
Anyone else has better ideas?

Hi Thomas,
WELL DONE! Next time you are coming to England, let me know - I owe you a seriously large beer (hey you could bring a German Beer Festival glass!!)....
The scene loads fine now and seems to be rendering away.....if it fails however, the beer coupon becomes invalid - he he he he:D

Cool! So I will keep my fingers crossed :)
I actually planned a short trip to London before christmas but I'm not completely sure yet if I can make it. Where in England would I have to go to for the beer?
Or would it be convertible into a rather big orange juice - I'm not much of a drinking guy, I just grow tired from beer...
I hope that python/AutorigII will soon be in a more functional condition - it should be a very powerful addition to messiah as soon as it is fully working and well documented.
Cheers!

Working like a treat!
I removed both autorig and pythgon mp's......now I've got to get the dll's over to all the nw machines and I'm off! Shame about the dll's.....I take it that when a new patch comes out, I'll have to copy the new dll's to all the machines again!
Thanks for your help on this.......
Let me know if you do come over to London so I can buy you that Orange Juice!
Ta:thumbsup:

Butterflynet is costed on a per node basis right? - This is the reason I have never even considered it...I just don't like paying per node when the actual application, which is vastly more complex allows it for free! I use Tequila scream for LW and, before LW8.0.1 came out, it worked very very well. I guess you may have no choice with messiah....but if you are only interested in LW and MA ...I would choose Tequila scream any day.....I know he is developing another version at present....maybe he could code it to work with messiah aswell?

You don't have to remove Autorig. The old autorig was a normal plugin and still works fine. Only the new one needs python, and as soon as python is removed, AutorigII is also gone AFAIK.
The .dlls will only need an update if Microsoft releases a new compiler. On most machines they are present already - a lot of newer software uses them. You should maybe do a search on the system folder (which aren't included with normal searches even if that option is active - you have to explicitly search the windows folder) for the dlls so you don't have duplicates...
"dll-hell" is no longer such a big thing as some years ago but it still can grow you some grey hairs... :)
Yes, Butterfly looks really great. I can't afford buying it currently but Paul Lord did help me out with a demo version that includes messiah support so I can now say that AoN:studio works nicely on a messiah network  :bounce:
Cheers!
