This question refers to Photoshop:

Hi, I was wondering when you texture a certain fabric or anything with a texture
that uses a greyscale overlay, what to do when there are folds or shifts in the fabric.
Because normally, you'd put the overlay on but it wouldn't reflect the different parts
of the surface. Is there a good way to do this?

im not 100% sure about what you ask. But it really depend on how highres of your model is. How realistic and accurate you want it tobe. If you have hyper real then of cuz no choise but to use a cloth generator like syflex. Other than that, you can pre-model some of the folds, or if you have a super low polygon model. Yes you put folds on the texture and you can't do anything with it when you want the folds to shift.

I never limit myself on overlay blend mode. Sometimes i even find out that overlay will saturate your original colour a little bit. It is also hard to control the dark value. Most likely i'd use soft light instead of overlay. But i'll test out all kind of blendmode before i finallize my decision.

Thanks for replying - I'm primarily a games modeller, so I work with lowres textures. Hmm maybe rendering to a texture would work.
