very nice, sleepless. you have a nice pastel-like feel to some of your stuff i've seen. i'm curious as to how you achieve this look in photoshop?

Sleepless.. wow I wonder the same thing.. how do you achieve the pastel-ish effects there in Photoshop? I'm so curious!

Anyways, here's mine... photoshop CS.. 30 min.

I mostly use PS7 for this stuff, I'm just more comfy with it than Painter.
I use a soft round brush with a bit of the PS linen or canvas texture to work soften the edges. Play with the hardness settings while you're working. Sample the background color and overpaint, 20% opacity setting,on top of the foreground(darker) color. It's a great way to soften the edge without making mud as in traditional media. I also use a textured brush(s) I modify from the standard PS brushes included, I just capture a texture and substituted it in one of the dual brushes. Load up the extra brushes on the photoshop CD and play around with them.
I should make some more but I'm too lazy..

I always work on a toned ground because I never could work on white paper.

Thanks!!! I appreicate that! i'm printing your comments so i could read that later and try to follo what yu said while i paint. :D

Yeah white paper is so hard to work with.. when i work with soft pastels i rather dark toned paper.. it just helps me to color so much easier than white paper... I should try doing that in photoshop! Thanks again for the tips!

Hey all,
Here is one I did. I did it from memory as I was doing it and as I was working on the sky I started to think of the Van Gogh painting called "Wheatfields with Crows" So I started to go with that look, but I called it "Green Fields with Crows" I also went for an impressionist look here as well instead of the "Van Gogh look".
Took about 20 minutes or so, used Painter 8

"Wingling" ...hehehe...or whatever that may be...this is my first speed-sketch I guess. I'm playing around with openCanvas and have a blast. I'm not sure if that already qualifies, but it's a whole lot of fun so unless somebody kicks me out, I may just continue making some and posting them. This one took from 4:42am to 4:58am eh....that makes it 16 minutes...but that's just with my stupid sign in the corner and my wacom doesn't make it easy to deal with either the resolution or the summertime...ehh..or maybe I've just never quite used it like that!? Hmm....anyway....here it is... THANK YOU GORO for putting me up to this! What a joy!
I still have to figure out my style....this is still to clearly inspired by your little but impressive demo of this painting style. It's very easy! I love it....but I need to figure out a lot more things now. I'm on to it....

Great work all over the place here! Really a pleasure to see them pretty doodles..hihi! ;)

ok, well, I might go too crazy with that nonsense, but it's just too much fun...I finally tried my hands on doing it with photoshop....which is obviously more controlled than openCanvas, but actually it is kind of nicer in openCanvas due to the fixed tool behaviour. At some point you just know what the brush does as opposed to photoshop, where it's so tempting to tweak it around. Also the interaction with brushsize and the general pressure behaviour is kind of nicer in oC.

Anyway...here's a 31 minute photoshop sketch from just now...hehe...:D

Yeah, I'm posting like crazy now, because I'm having too much fun with this.....it's one heck of a great diversion to do those doodles....not to mention the amazing learning aspect. I guess I'll be in the realm of comics for a while and will pretent this is pure purpose, but I fear it's obious that I'm simply not that familiar with "real" painting, neither am I too eager to end up making anything realistic looking....but I sure would love to be able to....I mean on the fly.
Here's my first over 1h doodle...actually 1 hour and 50 minutes so that's closer to two hours, but anyhow....here it is...

...hehe, yeah, I'm having some real fun here. I notice so much more since I've done so many 3D renderings, particularely Gi stuff as well... it's a great reminder to pay attention to those very simple adjustments to the lighting and bouncing of light. I may exaggerate it a little bit right now, maybe not, I don't know yet. I'm still exploring....it's great! THANX!
And thank you Goro! It's so amazing how much sense things make now. I'm still a little fearful with my colors...I really worry too much, but I'll get cooler about it eventually, I believe! I love your boldness so much....I want to dare doing some so vibrant images! Beautiful!

Hmmm...curious technique experiment based on some tutorial I just saw....Ryan Church's very pretty presentation.... ...although as sloppy and ugly as this first test is, the speed really impressed myself, I think....it's been about 35 minutes in Photoshop.

Analogue, black pencil on copying paper, no reference used, no corrections, about an hour :)

For everybody who likes trying pencil: Keep your pencils sharp, if you don't your drawing often ends up smudgy. And the visible lines gives your drawing a nice texture.
For book-lovers: www.saveloomis.org (http://www.saveloomis.org), very good books on illustration and anatomy and they're free too! There are no tips on digital drawing but a solid explanation on the principles of drawing and examples in paint/pencil/charcoal/etc.

HAHAHAHA! Yes of course! Somethings I do really care about and other become aspiring issues. The study was solely focuse on something I noticed about the head. ...ok, I just had to try my more typical kind of sketching in openCanvas. Inspired by the "allnighter" daily sketch I've done....another head, but I want to stop this right away, because it is dangerous for me to fall back into making just some character.... I need to keep exploring big scenes and such....

Anyway, here it is, pure openCanvas and somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 hours.

Here's the Allnighter sketch...Allnight (http://www.taron.de/Storage/Images/2d_sketches/Allnight.zip)

Yeah, I really get to know my way around oCanvas. I make a small softedge paintbrush that only smears, a small paintbrush softedge that only paints next to it, a large one that doesn't change size. Then for the Pen I changed the maximum size back to 0% for the first one (1pixel) and a big one next to it (but hardly use it!). The eraser has a softedge one large and a hardedge one smaller.

With that setup it is absolutely beautiful to work...great flow! And I know I've just started!

Taron333

The choice of color has a few basic decisions in the process.
1 - real or fantastic
Those actually make the decision-making branch already.
2. artificial mood or natural mood
3. mood by light or mood by surface color or both
4. colors of skin influenced by characters state, race, history (sun burned or cooked or frozen in the past for example...hehehe)

If the color mood is chosen by natural circumstances you have to look for consistency.
If the mood is chosen by surface colors and the light kept natural, consider the connection between the colors and possible bounce from one surface to the other (blend zones not by radiance (brightness) but simply by hue!)

As for color reference, well, always be aware of the light that illuminates the surface you are trying to use as reference! If you decide to stick with a reference by staying true to it, also replicate the environmental lighting and general color influences.

I may not be the best to teach this, but I think before it gets forgotten or overlooked I simply give you a little headstart.

You're head has very "Frida" like qualities, which is beautiful in it's very own way. But without knowing what your goal was for it (realism? stylization?) it is difficult to give you direct feedback. If it was supposed to be real and if it was supposed to be a healthy human begin, this is a bit too red and muddy. Some places on the skin show oily enough areas to produce highlights as well (like the nose for instance, forehead, cheeks, lips for sure) and those highlights are a bit of a reduced representation of the source of light. It is not too easy to figure out the exact location of such highlights, since they are literally reflected and not at the other angles of illumination that are lighting the surface. Observe and practice! I need to do the same! Also consider that they are somewhat diffused by the cellular structure of the skin and each segment of the skin has different structures that cause the highlight to be either more spread or very sharp. The denser the surface the steaper the sharpness of the highlights and viseversa! Last but not least, the high art of shading/rendering a surface is translucency. Consider places on the skin that are thin enough to actually get flooded by the light and lighten up the "shadow" side, or grow over the otherwise dark parts of the shape! (nose is a good example, but most favoritely the ears, but essentially this is happening everywhere on the skin, making it turn more reddish at the fading edges of an illuminated area!).....ehh...too much?!....well...I better make some examples to show that...

Anyway....have fun and observe! Observe carefully! Best school there is!

@taron333: I tweaked the colours a bit, now it's not so reddish anymore. I wasn't working with realistic colours in mind ^^)
Thanks for the pointers :)
It's just hard to pin down skintones because skin is so reflective, take a look at the tv-series CSI for example, they use a lot of coloured lightsources and a person's skin can look totally different from one shot to the next :(

Saw your site, nice 3D heads btw ^^)

Amazing balistic! How long did it take?
Probably about two hours, I didn't keep a close watch since I got interrupted by phone calls a couple times. I didn't use any ref except for the palm trees, because I've never lived anyplace that had any. I originally wanted to paint a big nuclear mushroom cloud in the background, but 2am rolled in and I had to call it quits. The composition is a little unbalanced as a result.

Jedi Pirate:

http://www.chrisguldager.com/Maleri/maleri_billeder/Jedi_Pirate.jpg

Last weekend I attended a small art convention, and I was hired by a company, who sells Wacom digitizers, to sit and draw at their booth, demonstrating how to draw with one of these things. It went pretty well, people were very interested and liked what I did.

I got the idea for this piece from a good friend who loves Star Wars and Pirates of the Carribean. So I made her this giftart combing the two worlds into one character.

Made in Painter 8, it took 4 hours including a much needed beer-break and small talk with people who asked me questions about the programs and digitizers in general.

Don't fear dark shadows:) I still see problems in depth. Think more about the lightsource.
Where does the light come from. If it's coming from behind you should darken the body
of the bot a lot more.

Maxine: Love that one, great work on the expression and schadow of the glasses.

This one made me realize how much I suck. Hopefully I will look back on it on day and laugh. Or cry. Photoref, over an hour. Best bit: The two strokes that show the sunlight hitting the the ground between the bushes. Worst bit: the rest.

I'm learning and I do not give up....I need this for myself to transfer this knowledge and experience into 3d as well.....but it's a long way to go, I'm afraid....

hi, this is my first 2d post on cgtalk.... speed paints here are sooooo cool! i usually do 3d, and i learn painting and drawing in my spare time.... this is a funky frog. photo ref used of course, all done in open canvas 3.0.(does anyone have the same problem as me, i cant save, i have to do screenshots, and often if i add a layer or use a filter it also crashes... is this damn soft buggy or is this my computer?)
i didn't do retouch as i usually do, so i was happy to come with this only by pure painting. The proportions are a bit off, but still ok. It took me almost 2 hours. hope you will like it.

Shozo: nice one, I agree with balistic that the wip is a little better. The scratchy stuff is almost like a ps filter. Great job anyway.
BnE: Nice one, can you show the ref? Try the support section on the portalgraphics website. They should be able to hook you up with a fix.
balistic: great lights as usual, I love the blueish shadows.

I was feeling a bit experimental today, got curious and fiddled around with textured brushes in ps. And this image was in my head for a few days.

Nope, the software is buggy....not to mention that this version doesn't have Network anymore...which kinda blows....so buggy and no network were two major reasons for me not to get or work it....but 1.1 the old free version is still nearly perfect....more crude and no fancy layers, but steady and network....fun! No crashing! (never crashed here!)

Nice, Supervlieg! Well, I really think it should be worth it to contact those boyz at openCanvas...eh...portal or whatever they're called. They've done a marvelous job with 1.1 and some things in 3.x are nice, too and it shows a great development despite the misses. If we could talk them into putting networking back in and they get to iron out those crashes, I would not only buy the software but also promote it as much as I can!

Petri.J (http://member.php?u=107115): How is Painter 9 ? I cant wait to see it since i heard it should be a great improved version of 6.. and not as bogged down as number 8 :D :D
New Painter is really cool. I haven't used painter very much before. Just trial versions, and then dumped them, but this one is cool. It has similar layers than in photoshop, and not to mension the neat brushes. Actually the reason that I didn't like painter before, was that it didn't have layers (atleast in the version I tested).

Anyway here's another speedy.

Thanks for your reply, tuzz.^^

Yeah, you right. The top right is too blurry. I've got to correct that.
Thank you for your pointing.^^

Actually all versions of Painter have layers in them. And they are mostly like photoshops layers, only with some slightly differently names for the modes sometimes.
I usually worked with Painter 6 and use layers alot... :D

Anyways i didnt even know there was a Painter 9 trail, so i went ahead and downloaded it. Seems very nice and fast.. Much like a greatly improved version of Painter 6 to me :D :D

Gonna try and draw a little in it during this weekend :D :D :D

Androgs nice to see you around again! I think it would have been much better if you
painted the bourbon sign without linetool and textool. It doesn't fit with the image.
just a thought.

Okay here is my first little speedpaint in Painter IX :D Love this app.. stable as version 8, yet fast as version 6 :D Gonne be awsome :D :D

Took about 30 minutes, including some time i took to make my own palette.
Though some places i had some bad brushstrokes, because it didnt always show the size of my brush :( Guess it's got some small bugs or my machine is acting up again :D

Anyways without further delay.. first speedpaint in my new favority painter version :D
