I never paint over photos, as when I used to do that, it ususally didnt get my anywhere. Most of the time, it is something I remember or a picture in magazine. So I just eyeball colors and values to my best. Thats what im trying to improve I guess with my series of speeds here. Hopefully Im progressing now. Sorry if I misunderstood your definition of "painting over photos". And thanks alot for the comments.

Looks pretty good, though that grey line in the middle is out of place. Dunno what that is suppoed to be but it think the image would work better without it ;)

great work.. i mean nearly photorealistic :D

CptObvious

Yep, I missmatched this line, thought that everything there is black :) Thx that will be corrected :)

SKippyMcHaggis
11-20-2003, 05:04 PM
it would be really interesting to see a version of the lake shot with more of the gray lines, kinda to have some tension between some nice realistic coloring and the artificiality of what drawings are... i can't say that's the best description, but it's sorta in my head... lay some linework over the top of the photoreal colors...

but i've always been facinated with that type of stuff...abstractions from reality, like Mondrian and his trees.

ok, done blathering...must go work.

maybe it would be better if we had a monthly speed paint thread...at least that would be some organization, and would offer more incentive to post...

anyway that being said...there are some really awesome pieces of talent in here...well done all!!

Not always true. There are some people, myself for example, that when they come accross a thread such as this one will go through it from start to finish. Though it just makes me more and more jealous i still do just to admire others work and sometimes become inspired.

Well, got a wacom for christmas and i finally decided to give it a serious shot, after treating it like a pencil i decided to loosen up a little (also helped a lot by seeing http://khangle.net/Tutorials/WaiterTutorials/Waiter_tutorials.htm and finally realising that all the professionals on here DO spend more than 30minutes on something before they end up on a masterpiece)

Well here it is, 25mins | Wacom (was at 500 - 1000pixels)

A friend of mine, Amanda, wanted me to paint her a portrait of her 'cuz she likes my writing, and I was suddenly in the mood to draw something, and gave me the "assignment." And I figured, I really can't draw worth crap, but I want to draw something really artistic... and then the two words:
"Abstract art"
came to mind. So I made her an abstract portrait of herself. We both like it.

http://www.eshelps.com/web/personal/writersblock/amanda.gif
We'll call this... a half-hour's worth of work.
Not technically difficult, I know. But... hey, that's why they call it abstract.
...Well, now it is.

Hi, I gues this will be my first post herehe, usualy I don't have much time for free pains recently, but I just couldn't resist this thread...so here's quick spaceship, about 40 min, lacks originality, lacks idea at all, but it was quick...

SKippyMcHaggis
02-18-2004, 05:42 PM
Calader,

that's a cool pic. not sure what you mean about the wing, so it's all good.

and don't worry about "finishing" or ideas...

some of the pieces here have them, and others are just exercises/playing around. that's the beauty of the speedpaint to me. it frees us up to do whatever, to stay loose.

while a lot of digital art is truly amazing, even some of that amazingly realistic/detailed and well done stuff loses some of the life that a sketch or a quick piece has. plus there isn't the attachment of hours and hours and hours of work to keep you from starting over or trying something different.

This is my first post and, I gotta say, there is some crazy stuff here.

I've been painting for a little while but never anything like speedpainting.

I set my time for 30 min but for some reason I could not stop. So here's my first attempt at speedpainting in 40 min. I'd like to call it "Tree Saying Goodbye to Dragon" or something like that ;)

http://www.naputi.com/stuft/pic/speed40.jpg

I don't know how some of you get out these great pieces in such a small amount of time.

all done in Expression

character - speedies (http://schmu.250free.com/conceptart/Char---final.jpg)

was a pretty funny test what you can do with the same set of eyes/ear ... made some more but those show the most diversity

Self portrait - about an hour in painter classic with a Graphire 2. If I did it right you should be able to tell I need a haircut, tan, and a more regular sleeping schedule. ;)

That first BTTF movie was great....

for what's worth, and to satisfy your curiosity, here's the finish. Put another hour into it and called it done. Quick and dirty. A little texture and more color. I haven't posted much lately, been busy working a FT job, freelancing when I can and wasting too much time playing with Lightwave.

Hope to learn a lot from all the great talent on this board.

Made in about 45 minutes without reference using Painter and Photoshop. I know... cheap fresco filter, but it saved about 30 minutes of work in contrast and darkening.

HEllo Everyone,

I have a question for you all. I have never attempted to do a painting in photoshop and was wondering what your workflow is.

Like do you use a different layer for your shadows and your colors on another?

I am just curious and would like your tips.

Thank You

Great thread guys!

Some quick stuff, sketch on paper and water colors in Painter.
The second one is inspired by a Canova's sculpt.

Kick @$$ work we got in here. I wonder if this is how impressionism (is that how its said in english? my bad if it isnt) came to be... renoir, manet and gaugin started race painting, to see who could paint the fastest, and they came up with a new artistic trend... :P

now now, all jokes being put aside, time to punch my card and go home to my digital canvas!

oxyg3n here you go!

everything is painted with the default hard edge round brush with
opacity to pen pressure.
I usually bock in the silhouette fist to see the composition and
the color values I will use.
http://www.area-56.de/pics/cgtalk/hangar_86_wip_01.jpg

Then I add some detail into the pic
http://www.area-56.de/pics/cgtalk/hangar_86_wip_02.jpg

I added more color in the picture and added a stone texture
with layermode softlight (know this little trick from wassup) Then I painted over the picture on a new
layer to hide the texture where it's not needed.
This is the final image took me about 1h30min

Anyhow, it'd be cool if people said how long each of these were taking - approx.

Here are a few from the last few weeks or so - far cry from some of yours!...

Each of these about an a piece - PS
