1 hour, PS! just testing some things.
And fantastic work everyone!
04-17-2007, 09:03 PM
About an hour. This is my first speed painting (second digital painting). I painted it in half an hour, and spent the remainder of the hour working on the composition:/ Let me know what you think.http://students.hthma.hightechhigh.org/%7Ekharman/11th%20Grade/MultiMedia/DA/Sunset2.jpg
04-18-2007, 10:45 AM
Good work all !
Jumbowumbo2, I think it's good...
Perhaps you can increase a bit the atmospheric perspective fx (foreground darker, to background lighter and less contrasted...)
Also, reflection on the water can be smoothed a bit...
Just my opinion:)
About 40 min in PS.
04-19-2007, 01:23 AM
blinck- i'd say watch the black and white level balance (..not too much of each..)
04-19-2007, 09:26 AM
I made this speed painting yesterday. Took about 30-40 minutes. Inspired by the new Nine Inch Nails album.
04-19-2007, 03:25 PM
audit: Thanks man, last one is lookin sharp
pretty quick one, 10-15 min
04-19-2007, 08:16 PM

04-21-2007, 09:44 PM
2 or 3h,... the text means:
"please one organ donor too eat right now"
04-21-2007, 11:11 PM
Something i doodeled while listening teaching company's lectures on psychology.
Mallory, nice coverpiece
BlinCk, nice progress dude
Sagie, nicely rendered forest dog you have there
Wasker, it still moves
MarcGoece, cool enviroment
audit, awsome coloring
PAOO, Jumbowumbo2, Welcome aboard
DIM, maybe some variety to sky would help the pic...its pretty nice though...impressionistic i like the coloring on the trees and the field.
edit: credit to barontieri for the diskbrush:)
04-22-2007, 08:06 PM
hey arkelin, thanks
I see you've got your hands on barontieris brushes :)
here's another one, very corny. not pushing values and hues as much as I want but, bleh.
Btw, it's 666 pixels wide :) coincidence?
04-23-2007, 01:27 AM
3hrs // Photoshop
This piece is just experimenting, I still not very good at drawing and colour.
04-23-2007, 09:12 PM
about 1 hour and a half, mouse. Just started to paint (learn) again after a very long time. Still catching on values, so no colors for now..
04-24-2007, 01:02 AM
arlekin, wasker - thanks
paooo - interesting, i like the intensity of the brushwork
wasker - looks good, but agree about the values. that little triangle brush is cool :D
miledream - your image has a really nice feel. could be improved by looking at refs to see how the light would behave in the scene. for example, the value/reflections in the water, shadows and silhouettes created by the intense light source etc. and perhaps more feeling of structure in the trees (ie they are not uniformly solid masses).
late night thing:
04-24-2007, 09:06 AM

04-29-2007, 12:37 AM
Nice work here, I am going to join.
How long is considered to be a speed painting?
Good work all~
four sketches in this week (20min -- 3H) PTZ 930/ArtRage 2 + CS 2
04-29-2007, 10:03 PM
nice ones bin
Jurffy, as long as you spend less time on it than a usual picture, it could be between 1 second and 3h-4hs. Depends. maybe a day if you're really slow normally. :)
04-30-2007, 08:12 AM
a new little speedpaint to get me back in the game. a little saturated, but done while working.. (shows how little work i had to do ;) hehe)
04-30-2007, 10:53 AM

Thanks Supermuscle :D, I like the colors in the last of your picture and the mood in the middle one, good job.

05-07-2007, 08:00 AM
Nice stuff all. Goro...the caustics from that sphere blow my mind 0.o
Been in a 3+ week slump, so I had some fun with abstract splat marks. Fun! Inf. by John Berkey and Koshime, I think :)
05-07-2007, 08:25 PM
thanks medhi and Goro :)
love the colors in your works Goro. Just want to dive into the worlds in the pictures and explore them. <3
Lookin good as always Samson
That's a neat picture Spex, it's really home world-esque. I think the text on top is a bit distracting though.
Here's a pic I did to test some of Meatsworthy's brushes. Inspired by my constant source of inspiration, Mr M.
edit1: argh, horrible perspective -_- what was I thinking?!
05-07-2007, 08:49 PM
Wasker: Yep, the text was a complete afterthought. I'll remove it. Cool brush-test :)
Another 2h of mucking around...
05-07-2007, 11:11 PM

05-08-2007, 03:31 AM

SR: wicked :D
Quick one before bed...I think they're guarding a gate or something.
05-16-2007, 11:59 AM
...good work guys keep it up...
05-16-2007, 01:19 PM
SamsonsReaper: I also think you should pay closer attention to value and form in your paintings. There are some nice designs and compositions, but usually it's all just covered with high contrast detail and the overall form gets lost.
It could help if you painted few sketches just in black and white, trying to get the forms and lightning right. Separate fore-, middle- and background elements, shadow and light etc. I don't mean your paintings are bad, I just think this could improve the quality and make them easier to "read".
05-16-2007, 03:57 PM
Hey, Arlekin. Nice work:) From my point of view, on the first pillars should be some more reflections. Both sides of pillars looks flattish. By the way, look at the bottom of column. Check up perspective:)
@SamsonsReaper -nice, like your paintings!:thumbsup:
@Spex84 also great work!
@Art, love the dragon!! :D
@Toobi, knackiger Hintern! Der HG ist echt super!
05-16-2007, 10:12 PM
All of you are making awesome art! Very nice and alot of inspiring stuff!
This maybe offensive its not my intention. Did it for the DSF forum 'Lurking in the darkness' but i decided not to participate. Anyways.
About 1 hour in photoshop 7.0
05-17-2007, 11:43 PM
korpi: thank you for the critique, yes i know i should define shapes and values better. Tried with this one. Could be worked better but its heading in the right direction.
very very cool SR
05-18-2007, 09:22 AM
Very nice SR .. really like the mood and the way you mostly define silloettes for the main focus area :D Nice ! :D
05-18-2007, 10:43 PM
SR, Vahn: great stuff. Vahn that eye-blotch keeps attracting my attention :P
Vueo: fantastic! It really has that high-altitude ambiance :)
A quick and messy one...
05-19-2007, 12:33 AM
 Samsonsreaper, :scream: Vahn, Vueo, Spex84, great!
2 hours in Photoshop/CS
05-19-2007, 11:10 AM

05-20-2007, 07:36 PM

05-21-2007, 05:05 PM

05-21-2007, 11:47 PM

psd, 2 hours
05-22-2007, 12:05 AM
wow great job everyone great stuff! This is my first try at speed painting, hope you enjoy it.
05-22-2007, 03:04 AM
Longsight, cool one. Pehraps could you host your image on a free site (imageshack, photobucket...) without that, when we need to be logged to see it.:)
Well, another one on the space theme...(quickly colored, not really happy...)
05-22-2007, 07:00 AM
Arnocob, those are amazing 0.o They have a different style than I'm used to seeing from you, more form/surface than linework.
as written in my "xhéndyhae & the crystals"-thread, the ynhe are mostly peaceful. only at a partial lunar eclipse, when the moon turns red, they become cannibalistic berserkers.
and that's what my newest speed shows (edit: ~40 mins):
arnocob：very cool
10 mins http://forum.coowow.com/noncgi/attach/2007/05/23/1179854993-userId-1189-bin112.jpg
05-22-2007, 09:55 PM
Bin: that 2nd one would make an awesome character, some kind of shadow/wraith...looks like it could perhaps be made of thin shell and a gel-like filling :D
~2h I think...if I'd known how long I'd spend on it, I'd have fixed the perspective a bit:P
05-23-2007, 02:19 AM
Bin - that last post is beautiful!!!
05-23-2007, 10:48 PM
Bin, thanx to. Great study you've made.
Here is another space enviro...Mars??
Psd, can look like a 3D base, but it's not(just lasso, geometric selections..)
+or - 2 hours
Color is nor really fine, and too much simple, but...
05-23-2007, 11:04 PM
Arnacob: Nice paintings, can you tell me, how do you do these straight lines? By hand or with line tool?
And what about the tutorial.. I wrote something into your thread some time ago about its making :) Pleaaasse.
05-24-2007, 06:53 AM
Medhi: You can easily do straight lines in Photoshop by pressing down the shift (brush tool selected) and clicking between to points.
A new one, about 2,5h in Photoshop. I think the design looks way too much from the 80s, but otherwise it's pretty ok.
Korpi nice one!
Bin that's a beautiful character!
Did this one for the daily sketchgroup starcraft 2
about an hour
05-24-2007, 09:32 AM
1 Hour Photoshop + whackom
05-24-2007, 10:08 AM
20 Minutes - Photoshop + Whackom
Spex84, Gord-MacDonald ,Goro : i considering that my english is poor,my expression maybe is not almost exactly.but,i know your mean,i just say:thanks very mush . :)
05-24-2007, 06:05 PM
Medhi, about the straight lines (in PSD), ...Korpi (nice speed, btw) has explained.
About a tuto: I posted new step by step in my thread, I think these steps are a bit comprehensive, ...while waiting a real tuto.:)thanx
Psd, 2,5 hours..(a bit rigid..maybe?)
05-24-2007, 10:08 PM
My return to speed painting.
1h 45m as a homage to D Dociu

05-27-2007, 08:08 PM
Great stuff all.
Bin: that sketch is one of the few times I've seen "find edges" used successfully. So I had to give it a shot meself.
05-28-2007, 12:04 AM
Goro, arnocob, beautiful. Heres my nightly thing..
05-28-2007, 07:46 AM

Speedpaint and wip
05-29-2007, 05:03 AM
Mask, Photoshop + Wacom - 1hour
Just as a disclaimer, any kind of message you might be getting is probably subcouncious on my part. It was started as a few strokes and they kinda guided the design. Im not on a mission to make a statement ;)
05-29-2007, 08:24 AM
nice ones goro! did u ever particepate in the weekly activetys over at ca.org?
05-29-2007, 08:32 AM
Havent been here for a long time.. Hi guys..
Photoshop, wacom, 40min, inspired by Sparth
Photoshop, wacom, no ref.
05-29-2007, 11:02 AM
1.5H Photoshop + Wacom
05-29-2007, 11:59 AM
Spex, thatīs great. Maybe itīs a good idea to put some of those Paletteknife-Strokes on a seperate layer and use some dodge and burn on it to get more variations.
Goro.,Thx.I especially like the way you use scale and atmosphere in combination with strong shapes.
Lotekk, thank you. I donīt use texture very often but itīs a good way to get some ideas.
It would have been a good solution for the water in your pic btw.
Well, on the other hand, sometimes it has to be the good-old roundbrush again.
korpi and arnocob i love your stuff, amazing.
arnocob, where could i find your tutorial?
About 4 hours in ps 7.0 (this is the original canvas size)
05-29-2007, 04:38 PM
Artvandeley > Thats a great dragon monster composition. I love the colour pallete
Here's today's enviro speedo

05-30-2007, 12:54 AM
05-30-2007, 09:18 AM
Photoshop, wacom, less than hour, a reference for the perspective was used.
05-30-2007, 09:29 AM
Hi @all ... first post so far at this Topic, I just wanted to join the fun.
I guess I have to post bigger the next time :D
05-30-2007, 11:21 AM
05-30-2007, 12:46 PM
Looks good, fredlovebot. Those tips from koshime he gave you over in the enviroment-thread seem to work well for you.
Hey, Blattwerk, long time no see :scream:
Samsonreaper, this is really cool. Simple yet effective, the way it should be.
Koshime, thanks. I like yours a lot.
Hm, i wasnīt too happy with the colors in the last one, so this is another attempt. Painter, about 2h
05-30-2007, 01:52 PM
Photoshop, wacom, less than hour.
05-30-2007, 05:50 PM
artvandeley: yup :]
another one, ~2h
05-31-2007, 01:25 AM
Vueo, I never made real tuto but on my wip thread "small works" for ex, there are step by step...
Spex, I like your "structure"
Fredlovebot, cool ones!
Keep it up!
here is an interior (quite new for me)
05-31-2007, 04:59 AM
about 2 hours, psd.
05-31-2007, 07:17 AM
well, another one...
about 2 hours,psd
05-31-2007, 02:50 PM
slick interiors, arnocob!
05-31-2007, 05:36 PM
omg, arnocob, you're unstoppable.
05-31-2007, 05:49 PM
fredlovebot, really great colors.
Spex84, ...you 're right!
I "spammed" a bit, those days, but I 'll be more "quieted" soon.
2 hours, psd.
vaguely inspired by the movie "Abyss"
05-31-2007, 06:21 PM
Spex84, "I 've interpreted "unstoppable" as "you produce a lot those days"...
Don't know if it's that.
05-31-2007, 06:23 PM
How the hell do you get that glossy look of your paintings arnocob?
05-31-2007, 09:10 PM
arncob: its good that you practise, i think you should try to mix more colours, and also softer colourtransitions.
05-31-2007, 09:39 PM
Great Stuff arnocob .. keep em coming :)
Here is a very quick sketch from life
06-02-2007, 01:58 PM
cool one, SR!
06-02-2007, 05:29 PM
30min not happy with it at all
06-02-2007, 06:02 PM
10min just for fun:)
06-02-2007, 10:02 PM
Blattwerk : thanx! Very relaxing painting!
XDreamer79: thanx too. Well, it's a mix between geometric 's lasso area, with colour gradation , then a paintover (basic rounded brush) in order to smooth the angles, and a paintover of "details". The final touch is a persp atmospheric effect ( soft airbrush) at each important ground of the image (light behind a wall, hole etc...)
SR: you are right about colors. I am not to adventurous in this domain...
So, I tried something more coloured...
+ ou - 3 hours (limit for a speedy..)

Wow, thanks a lot for this explanation arnocob :) Lets see if I can manage something of that *lol*
I love the scale of the first image. You captured the mood pretty well with this kind of ambient ligth :) I just love it.
45min, that's is pretty hardcore. Looks like less strokes but a good amount of details.

Been away from speedpainting for a long long time now .. but here is my feeble 30 minute attempt with photoshop. Still working on a better workflow and prefer painter still :D

Looking very very nice people.
arnocob Think you could save and show some intermediate steps sometime ? I love how you get so much texture in there somehow. I see a whole world of small details in what looks like loose transparent strokes. Plz post some work in progress pics :D
Spex84 Very filmic mood :D
Here is my leatest 30 minute painting ... still getting back so very loose lines :(
06-10-2007, 09:48 AM
omg arconob keep it up! such a pleasure to view your art

Here is another one from me.. 1― hour in painter :D
06-10-2007, 05:15 PM
Spex84, nice one!
Swoop, thanx too. On the last one, perhaps could you enlarge a bit the canvas on the right?and also make the right part of the bridge thicker. The windows's light could be more various...this's just my opinion...
Eat, paint, eat paint...my sunday's planning!

06-12-2007, 02:21 PM
Terro, nice acrylics! so, you are on traditional mediums these days? cool!
Goro, I am always impressed by your use of colors (mixed with good designs of course)
I am sure that you begin directly with colors, without a grey values study, right? that's what is so amazing for me!
06-12-2007, 04:00 PM
Thanks Arnocob, I'm actually still all digital, but I wanted to do something I can hang on a wall or give to someone , thus the experiments with traditional acrylics, lol.
As far as digital work goes, I'm still studying environments. I'm still way behind you, but things are coming to me faster and faster. Here's a WIP of a recent one from Koshimes workshop thread.
Goro: The use of colors in that piece is amazing man.
06-12-2007, 09:38 PM
Terro, great improvment on this one!
I think Koshime's thread is a good workshop for you, but you 've got already strong bases and feelings about enviros, though.
45 min, PS
06-12-2007, 10:11 PM
art : thank you, nice image but i think some strong high contrasty values would improve it.
here is santa having some problems
06-13-2007, 05:08 AM
SR: why the heck does santa have what I can only imagine is a bunny-tail on his rather prominent plumber's crack? You did say he had problems, lol.
06-13-2007, 06:00 AM
that i did, its not really a bunny tail, more like his other hand trying to hold up his pants hehe
06-13-2007, 10:23 AM
impressive stuff y'all!
Photoshop, wacom, no ref.
Photoshop, wacom, no ref.
06-13-2007, 02:08 PM
Terro, this is supposed to be a speedie? *doh* Looks great!
Samsonreaper, yeah, you are right: usually iīd push the contrast a bit more but right now iīm just playing around with the pros and cons of lowkey-images. I think they are perfect to support certain moods. Ah well, anyway, weīll see...
On the other hand i think you pushed the values a tad too far on yours. For example i think thereīs no need to highlight a red fabric with white. Hm, ...depends, itīs all a matter of taste i guess. Because apart from that i think your pic rocks as usual. The story is the icing on the cake :scream:
Goro, für Dich doch gerne :) Yours is yummy!
Edit: Ohnoo, 1st post again *rolleyes* Iīm not doing this on purpose....
06-13-2007, 07:21 PM
art>I can really feel the warmth of the light in that digital painting.
Decided to try my hand at practicing geometric shapes plus colour and shadow in Photoshop tonight...did okay on a cube, but for some reason couldn't get the sphere to work well...something about not researching enough beforehand on specular highlights and the shadows cast by a sphere...and it all led me to be inspired to paint this...
It was random. I messed the specular highlight and shadows of the sphere up, and it look like some kind of window looking into a cave...so I decided to paint a cave at night...

Some forested temple, done for the DSG.

Goro, again, absolutely perfect, you have it in your hands.
06-14-2007, 06:09 PM
Art: Its very nice how u expand the tonal low key image with some well placed highlights. I am always blown away by your easy looking style .. so much life.

Here is a current WIP...I have no idea if I'm doing the initial value study right or wrong though...just...painting it up, removing the original outline entirely or making it less opaque where necessary.
06-15-2007, 12:11 PM
Neat works guys.
Photoshop, wacom, about 1h, no ref.
06-15-2007, 01:39 PM
Umm, it's some cave... :D
And thx Anarcob for your Thread, just tried to get into perspective drawing,
and it works really well.
06-15-2007, 02:12 PM
Some eerie house.
Took Anarcobs step by step tutorial as reference.
Man, this works so well, done in about 20-30min.
06-16-2007, 03:44 PM
Vyse-soa, thanx, glad if it can be useful...
Here is a 2h15 speedy,...I wanted to try something realistic more fresh, without SF etc...
It's an exercise. Ref used this time (but it's not a paintover)
The main goal was to memories (for future paints) the process of creating realistic mountains..in order to make them without ref.
edit: middle less contrasted
06-16-2007, 04:32 PM
For some reasons I am in love with your brush strokes arnocob. How do you get that washed out colors?
06-16-2007, 04:46 PM
I totally agree... something really cool about the brushstrokes and colors...
Seems like you have a world of small details everywhere.
Would you be interested in doing a video while painting sometimes.. just record the painting :D Would love to see how you progress :D
06-16-2007, 06:41 PM
great work guys very inpressive, arnocob may i ask you where your tutorial is?
06-16-2007, 07:32 PM
About the strokes : In PS, I often start with lasso's selections (and save them in order to re-work on them later) with gradient colors. And I mostly use only basic rounded brush. What I define is just the opacity. So, the "watercolor" effect comes from the superpositions...
This is not a real tuto and this is not perfect (this is why I didn't post it in the appropriate thread)
but, here is the link:
06-16-2007, 08:10 PM
thanks arnocob very usefull :)

overpainting my old work:
06-17-2007, 02:42 PM
:)Nice one Swoop, I like a lot the atmosphere. Perhaps could you make the building more straight and work a bit more on the perspective?
Here is a color study (unfortunately, I've tried differents settings and differents wiews on photobucket, imageshack...and the colors are less saturated than the original). Any tip?
one hour, PS
06-17-2007, 04:06 PM
Yeah i noticed the crooked perspective when i was finished (cant see the forrest for trees hehe) and i didnt feel like spending more time on it :D
But thanks for your critique :D
06-17-2007, 09:33 PM
Arnocob: It is good to see something different from you.. keep going.
This is with my own photo reference:
06-18-2007, 02:02 AM
One hour, done after a party this night...
Well, started in a SF/adventure 's style, but...in the process, I 've changed it for something more funny.
06-18-2007, 07:20 AM
done for the EOW over at CA.org
06-18-2007, 11:25 AM
~45 minutes, photoshop, no reference.
Another beach-themed piece wasn't going quite as well as I wanted...I seem to have a lot of trouble painting cliffs and rocky surfaces, even if they aren't made sharp as a twig. So, I decided to go and mess around today. Heh...right now, I'm having second thoughts about this piece, but it was interesting to do. That's me, though - I will always beat myself up after doing something. At least I managed to motivate myself to do something today, which is far better than most days which I begin on a game...
EDIT: Hmmm...how do I show images from my Portfolio here? I think it's awkward how I keep using Imageshack when I should have my image displayed like everyone else.
06-18-2007, 12:00 PM
06-18-2007, 06:30 PM
The world is just illusion trying to change you
06-18-2007, 07:34 PM
Arnocob, the problem with the desaturation is that most browsers donīt support ICC-profiles. However they are expecting pictures to be in sRGB as a kind of preset. So itīs always a good idea to convert your pictures in sRGB before posting, you donīt necessarily have to integrate the profile . I do, but most people donīt. Doesnīt make a big difference anyway. What you shouldnīt do is to post pictures including an Adobe RGB-profile.
Interesting colorscheme btw. Like it.
Koshime, that one rocks! Itīs more an expression rather than showing fancy details which is just to my taste.
90 refless minutes in PS&Painter
06-19-2007, 03:23 AM
Art: nice one! Can you recommend a good site where I could learn more about these color profiles of which you speak? Beyond the differences between RGB and CMYK, I'm pretty oblivious.
06-19-2007, 01:48 PM
Old speed painting and recent speed painting

Artvandeley, thanx for the info. I'll do that now! Amazing color, lighting and pose on the last one! So living.
Another lighting study...(small persp problem, but ok...)
I wanted to work on the colors first. So, no details!

Yeah, i really like this one. Stunning perspective and great colors. Good job:thumbsup: Makes me wanna try this myself. But one pic at a time hehe...
