Salubri3i: Laying down colors and values are great studies for speedpaint :) make something look realistic in a few strokes is a wonderful skill when developed fully (see the overrated craig mullins homepage for this) or to speed up your workrate and keep your mind fresh (see david levy and sparth's works for this) Cherrio!
artvandeley: hehe thank you :) very nice picture by the way.

rodrigo, especially this red one needs some variation in hue to make the red more vivid i guess. I like the first one.

Anthony, that's not bad. I like the clothing, but the it looks like the face is lit by some reflecting piece of metal on the ground or so?! Almost isolated and certainly blown out. Seems a little incoherend. Don't be too worried about putting some shadow on the face, it's not a mug-shot, is it? I mean, sometimes showing less is showing more, you know.
Other than that...interesting style! :)

Vyse-soa, that looks pretty cool. Hm,i guess you forgot the reflections of the swords in the water.
Mallory, you should take your time. I like " Silent Hill"which took the longest the most and i think you left room for improvement in the others. "Atomwar" for example is a nice idea, you definitely should put some additional labour in it to make it work.

I'm terribly sorry but I really must drool over your work...Fortunately, I always keep a napkin near!
Great work...some of my inspirations for continuing to work in this medium .
Here's something I just finished...just airbrush on an online drawing program.
Program : Shi Painter
TimeL 56 mins
I spent most of the time trying to create the background since I'm not adept at backgrounds. but the foreground is just an excuse for space since I really wanted to get this out quick. If anyone ANYONE would like to further this work or create their own interpretation of it, just send me a message and gung ho!

Here's another that I did in 48mins in Shi Painter
Is lineart allowed here?

Samson...Are you going to elaborate on that mechs/robots warrior theme? I think it looks great

Spex84, I love that one! Great stuff!
But well... I shouldn't even start mentioning names, it's all fantastic, the whole new batch! I'm as usual somewhat ashamed to post, but hey... I'm having a blast with ArtRage2!
Just today I've joined their forum, which is quite nice and very focused, of course. Anyway, I've started this as a speedpaint and kept on dinking around until it eventually ended up taking about 3 hours...
http://www2.ambientdesign.com/forums/files/landscapea_3h15min_166.jpg
Earlier today I made this test, which also took a little longer than usual...ooh...yeah, also about 3 hours, hmm.... hope that won't become my average raging time...hehe!

DjahaL, I find your immense stylization very awesome and inspiring! I don't have that much control, yet, myself and find it truely motivating!

Oh c'mon, now! That's friggin' great! :applause:
Look at the overall proportions of it and the cute little face in the snout. Intentional or not, it looks totally fun, but in a concrete way! Doesn't look accidental at all! Not to mention that I really enjoy some of the very secure lines it has. At least that's what they seem like!
I'm currently thinking about making a close-up face after eh... A VERY LONG TIME and I really feel retarded right now... incredible what happens if you don't draw for a long time. I felt like not having drawn for at least a year, really. And if you check out the last entry of my "daily sketches" on my website, just look for the date! Anyway...it's a blast getting back into it and you know it! Your stuff pretty much always rocks, so nothin' to worry about! :bounce:

What's happening with you, if I may ask...have you always done these kind of hyper expressive studies? Can't quite remember...
I think it's a lil' shrill in the normal context over here, and it truely ain't easy on the eyes (high receptor usage), but it almost appears to show anger and frustration in a way. Correct me if I'm wrong, though! :hmm:

I have always been very ecclectic. There are times I wannna blast paint at a canvas from 30 feet away (either through a fire hose, or using a catapult) and other times I lock myself away like a cloistered monk, and spend several months working with powdered graphite on a 4x6 inch drawing, working up the surfaces slowly layer upon layer. I really want sharpen up my cg work - I confess I have been very shabby - lots of terrible stuff. The artwork I have done that I am really proud of would not survive/translate digitally - a shame really. Oh and no anger really, just hyperactivity - my mantra should be "slow down Gord, slow down!" ;)

btw, diversity for the win, imo. If you feel the need for trying new things, creating alien stuff and simply go for extremes it's all right. It helps, though, if you have found your own tone, established a sound connection between your emotions/identity and your craftmanship. That way, whatever you do will instantly be recognizable as your work. Which is the case with Gord, imo.
On the other hand, if you never established that connection, whatever you try will basically result in you being unsatisfied with the results... my two cents, though.
*sits back and keeps enjoying the thread watch*

Mile Dream,
thing that struck me first: it looks as if the bottom was missing. When the image was loading I thought it stopped halfway.
I sort of want to see that way continued and be able to get sucked into the landscape more.
Otherwise I like the environment very much.

Audit - really, really cool stuff. Love the sense of ease in the execution and the intelligent choices. Simplistic, effective and a great observation! :)
Ahm...SamsonsReaper - I've been meaning to say that a long time ago already, but recently it becomes unbarable to hold back: I'm in great awe of what you are doing and I keep wondering where the heck you get it from. Your choices, colors, sharpness, but ease, control and power...if you were asked, how you have learned to gain such security in your strokes, depth and masterful coloration, what would it have been?! I'm afraid to hear, that it's all just from a lot of studying of photographs and learning what depth and lighting means, but well...still, I'd like to hear it! So damn amazing what you do!

bin - heh, i'm jealous of you man! such as great style :) nice to see you still posting
vyse - hm, you think so? (i definitely don't think it's perfect!) i always struggle with colour choice; i always try and get at least some hot and cool in every painting, which helps the colours to pop, but tends to lead to oversaturation and flatness. unfortunately i'm not much on colour theory, i just go with what looks 'good' on the monitor.
samsons - first one especially is awesome

Thanks all!
audit: great improvements i think you should try to experiment more with other angles though:)
Taron:thanks, missed the question :)
I do alot o studies, mostly based on comp from movies from time to time. The colors are more of experimental. These studies are a base for free illustration on a later stage when you master the comp and colorchoice better. It is also effective to experiment with basic 3d models in terms of perspectives and angles.
The use of custombrushes is very effective where different brushes have different purpose,Some work well for texturing and som convey shape and form really well. An aspect that i tend to train on alot is to only paint where its needed. Not only does it save time but makes you a faster and more effective painter.
here (http://www.leventep.com/SP/SP_tutorial/)is a couple of process pics of earlier paintings, check them out to get an insight on how i work.
Now a days i just experiment alot with perspective-lines and extreme angles. And here is another 3h speed. In this one alot of focus was spent on colordepth and perspective.

Man, that's very nice, thank you very much, SR! I'm honestly a fan of your stuff by now. I'm kinda thrilled to have followed your growth from - i think - two or three years back at least. Tremendous!
I will take your tips to heart very much and already am excited to check out those wips!
Oddly enough I'm currently exploring even more traditionally looking painting, but I want to combine the powerful feel of such concept paintings as yours for example and the more traditional sense of strokes. I came to realize that it's the turn of the 16th to the 17th century, which I dig the most, renaissance painters as they still keep trying to capture reality as much as they can and introduce imaginary and symbolic elements. Anyway...
THANKS!!!
o0 there are fantastic works here! i don't thin i can paint a picture with such a level within one week!

<...> Alexina and Kreaon were stayng in boundless desert, cold wind was shoveling a sand in their eyes... No matter how it was hard, they must go. One by one, in the hope to meet or find something, little they traveled ahead, their bodies were enchained by heavy clothes and the hot sand was burning their foots ... None of them, deosn't know, how long they traveled, both couldn't remember, when they splited up with Vario and Klaria... Soon they saw an incredible desert landscape, that what they saw, was unbelievible, that moment woman and man, doesn't feel any hot in their foot, any cold wind, and sand rebounded from their eyes like, a rain drops from a car window. . . Their eyes saw a huge objects scattered in all desert, that what they saw, looked like mushrooms. Around their caps dangled... A wires? - Said Alexina. <...>
