This is my first time posting on CG talk and I'm pretty nervous actually! This is my first time to do a serious digital painting without lineart. I got inspired by all the lovely painted artworks by the Avalanche Studio that does the concept art for Disney's video games. =D

Hey SR - great image. it seems u are friends with similar tastes aye? the subect of the novel is similar to ur tastes yeah? haha nice pic though. colours are good especially, maybe more thought went into them than some of ur speedies? very evocative, i think however ur fg area needs some small details or a hint of the cliff's silhoutte. the figure looks good but it seems strange to me that the figure kinda melts into the city (is he on a cliff? the roof of a ruined tower? the latter could give u some cool fg shapes...). love the piece tho :) hope u can handle crit from an inferior artist ;) hehe
BIN - it seems to me that the fg figure masses with that rock shape in the fg (my eye groups the two). So it seems to me that the figure is infront of the light source and therefore it is very strange that the shadow cast would be visible on the far wall ? I cant get my head around how that perspective would work....?
but everyone. great work. very inspiring. im gonna paint right now :)

You spex - nice pic.
If ur apologising for monochrome OD already, then theres not much i can say for these....
haha
anyways, inspired by samsons reapers work, and some tips m@ has been giving to various people I have begun to realise silhoutte and tone are two of the most important parts of speed painting. So i decided to have a crack at a couple with refernence, to get used to painting these things.
these are both done from ref and both took about 20-30 mins.
I am quite pleased with the second one.

From the journal of Private Alex J. Murphy
Saturday, 1st of July 1916
"From afar all we could see was a green glow. It wasnt clear what was causing the kills on our squadron. I looked like a green ball, but shooting it yielded no results. Thunder shot from this green ball and our men exploded when hit. It was like fighting a god. All we know is we lost that battle within a few seconds. As the battle came to an end I saw this mighty silhoutte standing in a ball of fire. I don't remember what happened after that. I guess I must have lost consciousness. I know not how I survived but I woke up the morning after the battle to find our whole platoon dead. Where the man stood who had defeated us only a hill off glass remained."

Wow...the images are simply amazing...
Not only because they are drawn with a good technique...The atmosphere, they create is the key...
Esspecially the last one has a very strong atmosphere.
Very well done.
Something more to the grey mountain-picture:
Would you mind, doing a screengrab, when painting something like this again?
Would be more than great. The technique comes along very nicely.
Keep up your work...

For the foggy one, I just started doing the fog and clouds with the custom brush from furiae.com and then added the rest just by sketching in on a new layer and erasing some parts of it, so it got surrounded and overlayed by the fog.

I've made a bunch of speedpaints for experimenting with the ZbornToy (http://www.taronites.com) and Gord made me realize that it's actually kind of perfect for here in a way...
The basic sketch is totally rudimental and a matter of minutes (this one roughly 5 minutes)
http://www.taronite.com/zborntoy/stills/ps_scribble01.jpg
But once you run it through the Toy, every little bit of the brush shows and reveals something rather appealing I find...

SR- I have to say your work looks great. I especially like how you maintain a very siple surface, while getting a painterly feel. I'd like to see your process sometime. Do you have a post liek that online?
Specifically on that last piece, I feel anchoring the two dark shapes to the top edge really weights the piece down. The previous piece you posted had a very open feel that I like better. Is there a particular reason you anchored it this way?
Yeoh- I like your piece as well. Simple and painterly. But I'm not sure what the big figure is. Is it a robot, or a vehicle?
werepumpkin
10-29-2006, 04:17 PM
ARGH! sorry about the double post, but I submitted before I was done.
annisahmad- I like the scale of youe image. It has an almost epic feel. I don't think the large planet on the top right would mee the horizon like that. You probably have looked up some reference so you're probably a better judge of that, but even if in reality it could/would look like that, compositionally it flattens the deep space you have created.
As to the subject, this character is isolated from the world. Is it frm his own doing? Does he have some power that created this riff?
Spex84- Compositionally speaking the focus of the image is too centered for my tase, but I love the pallette and the creature.
Spex84- Is that a creature or a suit of armor or something? I love the textures. Is that from your own custom brushes?
dario- I love the rang of work, your color pallette, and strokes. What software are you using?
ikuru- I dig. I like the mood. I wonder if you should keep the light blue around the flower darker though.
werepumpkin: I suppose it's both :D.

I had this idea during writing my first AE plugin, a color correction tool....then I played around and realized what else is possible in 2d...I couldn't stop and it became wild enough for him and me to tackle the rest together. That's a weired thing to say, i think ("obviously you need to copy"). I think it is good to get inspired, once you've come deep enough in your awareness at what you're looking at.
But I would recommend studying the logic of it....make yourself familiar with shapes, simple shapes. Then observe the logic of the light and shadow forming. Observe and recreate. Develope an understanding of shape through how the light moves along it! Almost like a raytracer, consider the surface normal (direction into which the flat surface is facing!). If in your head you would break down each 'pixel' of a surface and consider how much light it would get (this is insane by the way, but one way of describing it), then you could logically develope a deep understanding of what light does over a surface.
Once you are really good at it, you can practically model three-dimensional during your painting, so to say. You can feel how the shape forms in the third dimension.
This is a very powerful way of gaining control over your paint process. After that you can look at other work and begin to understand their ideas behind it, or how they might have been thinking. But best of all, you can create stunning work that is totally unique yourself! :)

Obviously Copy is a bad word. I could have said to "study" or whatever but I really dont see the point.
Here is a quote to rub it in ;)...
"If there is something to steal, I steal it!." Pablo Piccaso
Taron333

I think when it is about learning, it is important to really understand! Copying, or studying paintings is often confusing or not really helpful when it comes to really get it! It's about really getting it. One piece of the magic might get lost along the way, but a whole new dimension of magic and self-expression opens up!
It's in my eyes the very best approach of learning anything to go after understanding the real substance of what it is that you want to do! Like in math for example! If you learn all the formulas to recite them at anytime, they end up having no actual meaning to you. You just blindly remember numbers and operators in some specific order. But when the task gets more complicated and the formula doesn't exist in your memory, you wouldn't even know how to approach the issue. Versus if you had understood the methods and the logic behind those formulas, you might be able to create a new one to solve the problem. :lightbulb
(far fetched? I personally think not, because I did so much simple math on my developments, which often required thinking of new approaches as opposed to tossing in some set of prefab equasions. Had I not understood the real math in its pieces, I couldn't have done those things! But I hope my point came across somehow!?) :argh:
Plus, do with it what you want, just thought I'd give you my 2 cents on it... not to mention that it wasn't a personal attack or so... just a little additional thoughts for everyone's consideration... :wise:

Alright, Im obviously many years behind you guys when it comes to lighting techniques... how would you suggest I get started on practicing lighting ?
draw simple objects - spheres, cubes, cylinders etc - alone an combined - set up the lighting with a portable lamp - better yet - one and two lights. Look at and paint from photos and paintings with really good lighting in them. Study reproductions of masterworks by placing tracing paper over them and pencil in the lights and darks - loose and with a light touch. Try and get the loomis books (available online), Johannes Ittens book Design and Form.
Oh ya study the work of the best 4 or 5 contributers to this forum!
Thanks guys ! I think Ill start with something simple and that doesnt take too much time like the cube studies and simple shaded objects as yeoh and gord suggested.

Alright, I managed to get some sketching done... hows this for lighting practice ?
I worked on them in this order : Cube > Cylinder > Pyramid > Sphere > More complex shape.

Fuge,
on the dark side of basic shapes there are gradations, too. At the moment you gave it all a black tone, but the gradation runs from the darkest area (where no direct light hits the shape) to the dark light area (where reflected light hits the shape)
definitely check out this article: http://www.anticz.com/drawing1.htm

Fuge!
If you know what the back of the object looks like and where the light source is, than its easyer to figure out what the shadow is like...
I dont really know this stuff that well myself... Allso I think allot of people use simple 3D cubes etc to get this right the easy way...
here is a verry usefull link btw, http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=410461

AArgh! Suddenly, i seem to have subscribed to all kinds of forum topics ive been to and my e-mail account is Filled with CGTalk "reply to your subscribed topic" messages!! And even when ive Unsubscribed (for example, from this SpeedPaint topic), it still sends me these... So annoying! And i hadnt even pressed the "Subscribe to this topic" -button!
thanks Libor, vahn
chinabear > wow, nice!
Fuge > The complex shape looks good... set up some cubes in real life or get some photos for reference. Pay attention to how different a color is in light and shadow. This is important so objects don't lose their local color or end up reading as reflective when you don't mean them to. Also put them in a lighting scheme so that everything can be treated consistently... see attached example at the end of post.

I'll be looking into all the links and images you've posted up as soon as I get some free time.
Haha Mu, you got me there. I think the reason I dont have any gradient on the darkest face of my shapes is because I always painted in the darkest face first and then based the rest of the object on that face.
As yeoh sugested (I think thats kinds of what he meant), I think I'll work on one scene with one lighting and several basic shapes and see how that turns out.

Yeoh - I love the alien.
Cyanid - I like that. Is that PS or Painter? What tools are you using?
SR - I saw your tut. thread. I must say use a great combination of a painterly technique an a great sense of clean design. But as insightful as the tut. is about your process and techniques, I am most impressed with your sharp sense of aesthetics and design. AS always, I like you last post.
arnocob - Is it you that has a series on flying machines? I vaguely remember some hot air balloon dock. Was that yours? This one is nice too. It has the same bright and clear day feel, but this time seen from an interior space I like it.
Here are my latests from this morning.

Goro - Great little piece! I love the color, space, dynamisim, and plain fun of the piece.
SR - Great, as always!
Robair - Very interesting vessels. Are you using brushes for those textures, or texture images?
rawwad - I like the eerie, atmspheric mood.
jpedro - Is there a story behind this one?
Vahn - Striking. Is that a photo you're painting over?
redfive - I LOVE the black and white piece! How do you do that? id every line put down just like it is, or do you start very sketchy, and polish and tighten them up as you go?
Norante - This is another one I want to know what the sstory is.

Donīt let the apearence of this little exrta terastial creature fool you.
It might look Mayhem but its really just the kindest of spirits.
You see what it does is it nurtures it self from dead trees by "hugging" them with itīs tentacles.
And while doing so not only does the tree come back to life, even better, it becomes a imortal magic tree.
This creature is here on earth, but on another paralel dimension,
you will need to get intoxicated with Peyote and guided by the Shaman in order to ever see it.
But even then itīs really quite rare to see it.
The shaman calls it "Taleelayo" but the acidheads of the western world mearly call it "Iggy".

Gord: THANK YOU! one tip I always give to approach color is to go with sepia tones (and this applies to acrylics or oils too!...) go with a very rich dark brown as your darkest color, and pure white as the lightest and mix and blend them. When you are comfortable with this combination, spice it up by adding an aditional color and you develop from there. Then add two and so on until you detach from the sepia tones. :-)

thats good advice dude, and I would remind all noobs
to watch this free tutorials, by Bobby Chiu right here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=410461)

Hi all!
First time posting in this thread, I'm not very good at 2D so I need to practice a lot more. Doing only 3D is not healthy for an artist (at least for me, it takes too much time to get something done!).
So here is a quick 20 min painting, getting familiar with this brush thingy. Better things to come in the future hopefully!:)

Wasker: Great!
Gordon: Not very much understood your last comment. Possibly I not very much well understand English.
It is simply speed pictures in one case from nature, in other a subject was simply thought of. No repherence images. It is principle.
I paint in my lunch break only. I paint for pleasure. For no particular reason. Not every day. Sometimes after work, but very rarely as very busy. I am not in a position to search repherence for the speed paint!
