A lot of great work here people! Keep em comming!
m@: your works are simply great, your hard work is showing its fruits on a daily basis:applause::buttrock:
its truly inspirative to look on your art and every time one could easily want to paint something - thx for sharing your stuff!!
metaborg: I like your noir painting a lot, it has great appeal:thumbsup:
photoeyes: your line work is great and really heavy on all those details - I like it a lot:thumbsup:, but you should try different approach for coloring - it doesnt work well together (loose a lot of lines and use color instead it would make a big difference!)
hereīs my painting when messing with Artists oils in Painter, photo ref used, approx. 2hrs

m@ i am seriously amazed - you have a ridiculous amout of skill. I could have sworn that was a 3D model when I first looked at it...or a photo :scream: Could I ask what res you worked at for this? thanks,
10-13-2005, 01:57 AM
Wow m@. That is the type of stuff that discourages me from posting Lol. One day I will grow big and strong. maybe.:D
10-13-2005, 08:23 PM
m@, zhuzhu: Just beautiful. Seeing your latest pics inspired me to do some painting again.
10-13-2005, 08:56 PM
m@, something tells me you must be blown away by your own piece right about now! I've looked through all of your posted paintings on your website! Your evolution is unparalleled from what I can see...it's amazing and admirable! Your style is highly advanced and mature! I can relate deeply to many of your forms with an original sensation of admiration.
Your leaping it technique must have some specific origin. What's your secret! What are you looking at? The color and contrast ratio is extremely balanced! You're doing fantastic work with it, but what's your "inspiration" in terms of light and color! Looks like it has a guide of some kind. I believe this could make you reveal a great information for everyone, who's unfamiliar with it. :lightbulb
Congratulations and ROCK ON!!! :buttrock:
audit : thanks. I worked in 2000*1200 approx for this one.
pushav : thanks but hey! keep working and posting!
Plagiarism : hey thanks, I'm really glad if my work can motivate! but I don't see your pic though , only like 10% of it shows on my screen :(
Taron333 : thanks man, it means a lot coming from you. Well, I don't really know. Concerning my progression, I've been speed painting a LOT this last month (which makes me dead tired atm ), and it really helps. The reason I draw so much I don't really know.... for one thing, I stopped playing videos games :p
I've been working on 3D stuff and traditionnal for a long time before I started painting in photoshop, so one of the reasons of a quick progression is that I start to feel technically "at home" with photoshop so I can express everything I've learned by other medium .
Design wise it's the same , the designs I'm drawing in say, the last one is stuff that I have in mind for years now. I just start to feel confident enough in photoshop to dare speedpainting them.
About lighting, well, I just started lately to study photos and use photos as references ; though I didn't use any for the last pic, I just used a simple wireframe as perspective guide.
But in the picture of the plane and the one with the round robot in the street, I looked at a photo at the same time to inspire myself of the light. I guess those exercises helped.
I used to never work from ref (in 2d or 3d), thinking that it would restrain my creativity. only now I understand what a mistake it was, and wish I would have studied more !
But anyway, I think above all that observation and reflexion is important to paint good lighting, I always try to understand the surfaces and the space around my scene, how bright the light sources are, what colours etc and paint the radiosity, reflections etc accordingly. I guess my experience in 3d helped a lot too.
Hehe what a long post, but your questions were interresting, and thanks again Taron!
no ref, 1hour 30 approx :
10-13-2005, 10:44 PM
thanks a lot for the post! pics are so amazing, the first one its a beautifull piece and so in space! cant say no more, last one its seriouslly amazing considering you used no reference. keep doing this man! thank you so much.
10-13-2005, 10:52 PM
Beautiful reply, m@! Thank you! That's pretty much percisely what I expected! I also notice the benefit of studying photos! I have to start doing that more intensely! I usually like to work based on logic, trying to comprehend the flow of light and bounces, but I happen to realize again (because I've been thinking about that particular thing for the last 20 years I think), that the contrast ratio between light and lit surfaces is so sensitive to the material it's supposed to simulate (photo, human eye, filmstock...etc...etc...camera settings and properties) that it really requires some careful studies. It currently is simply impossible to fully replicate real life's effect contrasts on the human eye unless you have some kind of insanely experimental and expensive gear to even view that stuff. One day HighDynamicRange Screens may be available to the public and GFXboards handle the bit depth to make use of it, but for now...well.....it's all about understanding what a white surface means to a bright haze of light.
I'm unbelievably happy to find the same philosophies I have in such an amazing artist as you are! Deeply happy! Although I'm sometimes almost angry that I spread myself so thin that I can't really focus on anything enough for any extended period of time, I have no regrets, yet, find works like yours and your personal development awe-inspiring and even draw strength from it!
10-13-2005, 11:28 PM
M@- Thanks for the reply. Speed painting is new to me and I try to find a brush that is right for me. So I made some in Ps7 and I guess they are decent. anyway here is my new stuff
Done in Photoshop 7.0 About 20 min in total.
10-13-2005, 11:28 PM
I dont have any new painting but I have to reply because I simply canīt resist guys:scream: so heres my apologies! I will post tomorrow I promise:deal:
Taron and m@:
I was thinking about the same Taron (m@īs great and fast progress) and exactly wanted to ask for m@īs "secret" but my english is so poor that I didnīt dare - it wouldnīt be so nice and polite like Tarons words:rolleyes: I even wanted to ask ma@ to post links to his old works so I can track (and get inspired by) his great progress! I think it would be great to see them in one thread. I have already a lot of ma@īs older works (from CA too), but there are probably many unseen from past (I can remember just two - dancing girl with red hair and boys on roofs) - I mean real "m@īs oldschool pieces" not those seen here in Speedpaint thread.
It simply does mean a lot for me too, thank you both of you guys!! See ya later...
10-13-2005, 11:32 PM
Uploaded my previous pic again, it seems to show up ok now. Here's another one:
have to agree with taron...your improvement is insane....the force is with you m@
Your last couple of speedpaints kicks so much ***
But taron...wait a second...you are also one of the fast improvers...when I see at
your blog it's insane how you paint now.
Had a lot of things to do the last weeks (that's why I coudn't make the first ps step sorry for that) I'll send you an e-mail soon! ^^
10-14-2005, 01:43 AM
Goro-You have a step by step? Where? Lol. I like you video of the elephant in the jungle. Nice work. Thoses brushes that you give away does not work in my ps7 :(
10-14-2005, 08:17 AM
really great sketches here, hope i can keep up.
Hey M@., zhuzhu, Goro Great work guys..
m@ ,Goro great
10-14-2005, 09:37 AM
M@, I'm so in love with the design, choice of colour, and painterly/textural/lighting effects in all your sketches. Hugely inspiring. Eventually I want to spend all my time working on my own projects, I hope that you do the same one day, cos' it would be incredible to see your stuff expanded into a comic book or animation format.
And I've got to get back to finishing off our mini-challenge on day soon!
All the best man,
renderwhite : thanks
Taron : thanks again, a lot, for your words. I can't wait to paint in HDR :D
pushav : keep it up!
Libor : hey, thanks. Waw, you remember those :D on my site though you can see some of my older work.
Goro : thanks a lot man; nice character, lots of personality, and great colors.
SquarePixel, bin : thanks.
gjpetch : hi there man! great to see you here :D I deeply appreciate your words, glad you like. And yeah, I definitely plan to work on my personnal ideas! I just never really dare to start , thinking I need to get better before :p and yeah... we need to get back to those two creatures; would be a shame to stop them at this point :D see you around!
sorry no pic
One to be expected later today, when I get back home...though I had to reply to all those nice words :)
10-14-2005, 10:29 AM
Holy mother of gods m@, your paintings are beautiful. You really should expand into comics or something similar so we can enjoy a whole barrage of them :)
10-14-2005, 12:49 PM

Goro: funny style~~~!
SquarePixel: nice MT sketch~~~!
Petri.J: great colors~~~!
pushav: nice to see you have keep it up. i think you don't worry about which PS brushes using. three brushes just enough.
Hard round brush:for basic painting.
Airbrush:for blending and rendering.
Texture brush(like chalk): for apply texture surface.
[General] in Photoshop 7
10-15-2005, 03:40 PM
Zhuzhu-Yeah I reduced the number of brushes I used to 2 lol. Custom palette knife and custom rake brush I created. I should start using the basic round but I dont like photoshop's round that much. I should try harder. I will post more. Thanks for the comment.
10-15-2005, 07:02 PM

10-16-2005, 04:56 AM
Zhuzhu-that is hard for me especially doing 100 percent digital. Can I use a scanned sketch to speedpaint? It is hard for me to setup a scene doing all digital. Maybe you can help me or make one of your tutorials. That would be helpful. Thanks.
10-16-2005, 05:39 AM

10-21-2005, 07:25 PM
This poor girl was trapped in the cellar of my mind.
She meant to get out in 15 minutes, and she did.

Great introduction Alkaline111, welcome on board
Great works all!
10-22-2005, 11:57 PM
pushav, bin: thanks! :)
spyro: Real nice colors and atmosphere! Great work! ...hmm..it looks a little empty though. I guess it lacks all those smaller buildings that crowd the free space. But I know painting them is a pain in the butt :) I always wondered how Spooge etc paint cityscapes so naturally and quickly and it looks like each building is placed correctly in perspective...
bin: The last one is real cool!
10-23-2005, 08:03 AM
great sketches guys!
10-23-2005, 10:52 AM
10-23-2005, 05:34 PM

SquarePixel (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=179114) vbmenu_register("postmenu_2772212", true); :COOL~ I LIKE IT
10-27-2005, 02:06 PM
Hey Square, do you use lasso/marque tools to when doing really percise hard edged shapes? Like in the tile floor in your last one?
Also, i guess this question could be directed to everyone. How often and how important does everyone feel it is to paint from life, opposed to imigination? i find myself drawing monsters, elves etc.... in my spare time, i cant help it, but it is practice, and i do want to get better as do we all:) Just curious on other artist take on the importance of life study?
10-27-2005, 02:32 PM
cool stuffs everyone~! let's go rock~!:bounce:
10-27-2005, 08:11 PM
cool stuffs everyone~! let's go rock~!:bounce:
I was wondering, where do you find your references if you use any.
10-28-2005, 12:11 AM
wanbao and zhuzhu, nice guys
Alkaline111- yah sometimes i need use the lasso/marque tools because even with a hard brush it doesnt get that hard clean line which is desired.
Lighting and material test

10-29-2005, 12:37 AM
one from ref, googling weather photo's, couldn't resist
edit - forgot to say, stephan - yep, there's gotta be a transform trick or something involved, i'm thinking if he doesn't use a 3d base, he must paint it flat on and transform before giving it height or something, either that or he really is a god :)
rock on spyro!
keko I think if you made your brushstrokes sharper your images will look even better.
10-29-2005, 08:20 AM
Nice work everyone, keep them coming!
10-29-2005, 03:31 PM

quick sketch in Photoshop 7
10-30-2005, 03:41 PM
Zhuzhu-I dont really see the shapes when I paint. I do when I draw. I dunno but it is weird. I tried to do the stroke method but it is not working for me. My color selection in photoshop is bad. I wish the program had a color wheel like painter.
Here is another startied in painter 7 and finished in photoshop 7....

try to feel the shapes, it was necessarily. use color choice in photoshop, i always use color palette, and set HSB mode to adjustment, that would be fine.

Hello, I'm reading a book on perspective, and I'm trying to improve my skills. Plus, I don't do alot of landscape pictures. I wonder what I could add to this picture (besides detail :P)
a little less than 1 hour.
11-03-2005, 09:06 AM

This speedie was originally inspired by a lineart made by Petri J. I would give him more credit by posting a link to his picture but I don't know if he want's that, I've already once f*d up his domain ;)
