It might be a little strange to advertise that, but I just recently got introduced to Blogger.com, which is kinda neat...sort of a dairy that can easily be used to simply collect the REAL daily sketches. I've started only a few days ago, but it's truely great to start the day by making a sketch and posting it in the blog! It also invites to write a little bit to it, which is fun all by itself...strange age to start with something like that, but truely entertaining. Anyway...if I can keep it up, it will have a new doodle every morning that can be 2d, 2.5d or 3d.
As of right now, I believe it's a great concept...but that may change, hehehe! :p
Feel free to check out my blog...

I just had a look at your blog. May I be your servant?
Your stuff is so cool! Not just the subject matter, but I love the way you render things, it has this intriguing look to it....
Got any tips for younger, less wise beings?

HAHAHAHAHA! That's very sweet! Thank you! Hmmm...what an interesting idea...I could make a blog-tutorial-week....although I still feel like I'm not fully entitled to teach, since I know just how much I will have to learn to get where I feel I want to be. Too many things I don't know yet or don't have the proper command in. This might be very related to the fact that I hardly ever work with reference and I don't say that to brag or pride myself with it in this case. I somehow expect that at some point I just understand enough to realize a reality off of my ideas. But it's far more than reality or "just" reality. It's somehow also about this eery quality of classical paintings. I'm so thrilled by some of the early impressionism, when there was still a strong desire for realism in there, but the mood was more dominant. It's so facinating in terms of skill and sensibility. I know I'm far from that place and inch my way towards that quality. Look at 'freaking' Enayla (and I really, really mean that in a good way). Her work is this sort of masterful execution towards what I'm talking about. Yet, I seek just a little bit more flexibility for myself. :argh: :wip:
However, I'm more than happy to share my discoveries and offer them to you! It's probably a great exercise for me, too! :bounce:
I've just made another painting, yet, I may actually futz with it some more (very unusual thing) and then I will post it either tomorrow or tonight...it's a curious one, I think...or hope?! Another experiment... :hmm:
Thank you, again! And we could talk about the whole servant thing at some point, too! :D

08-28-2005, 10:32 PM
Thanx!!! :buttrock:
I'm still trying to figure out what I'm gonna put in the foreground of the new image...I somehow don't expect it to become anything, because it's just too damn unusual for me to work on a PICTURE for any extended period of time. But what's great about it is, that I feel like it needs something very correct or accurate in order for it not to fall apart. I want to put a human in there and realize that he or she or both need to be relatively perfect or anatomically acceptable...so it's a challenge for me. More so, I'd love to get a sort of classical touch to it and that's probably the biggest challenge to me. I'm almost a little worried or even scared... ...hmm... I guess I shouldn't be, but well... :wip:

HOON, that internal acting guide is unbelievably tight, I love how it jumps from cartoony expressions to the bushy eyebrowed blob for the finish.
Metaborg, I like your red/black sketch (there's a word for that style of drawing :?), lots of expression and great contrast.
Erilaz, try adding a bit more contrast and color into your shadows. You seem to be washing out or desaturating your painting with greys for shadows, this is the exact problem that I've been working on as I only drew in graphite, charcoal, and other grey mediums until recently.
Keep em coming everyone! :scream:

I manage to update my blog (http://taron333.blogspot.com/) daily now, but thought I'm gonna throw in the latest here at the speed paints...although, hmmm...it's not really a speedpaint....took a few hours during the day...not continuously, but still...I kinda like it, even while it's terribly cheesy...

Thank you so much, Rebecca, of all the people, because my anatomy is truely lousy, hmm, although, it's not really the anatomy that's not so great, I just don't take any time to really think about it or execute anything with any reasonable care. Let's take the goofy legs for instance. I just scribbled it within the flow and liked the shape. Later I'd always think to myself "grrr, man, gotta do something about that leg...grrrr...ah well". But never once I went in there....lazy? Nothing feels good enough to spare any extra effort where it may not help? I don't know what really goes through my head then.... Anyway... I'm proud of what I can do from the solitary top of my head (does that sound weired?), I mean just by imagination, but I know it's time to ignore pride again....I'll go check out your lessons!!!
Thank you, again! :bounce:

Taron333,
Wow, just saw your post ~ thank you very much, coming from you, these are big compliments!!! :D Your work is amazing, and to say that your anatomy is 'lousy' is just crazy...I've seen your website a few times, and your work is just incredible! :) So thanks for checking out the forum, and I really hope you will participate in the Open Figure Drawing Workshop threads (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=269438) (we are on the OFDW 002) (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=269454) ~ and it would be great to see your work on any of the other threads! :bounce:

Wanbao, stellar light rendering and such little time!
Also, the last few drawings have had really vibrant colors and expressive brush strokes, I'm digging it. I love seeing so many different styles on here, for the longest time I would only see heavily blended paintings on the digital medium, the heavy use of textures on this thread oftentimes add so much depth and life to the paintings.
I really appreciate the occasional tutorial and/or progress paintings that I've been stumbling across.
Quick like a bunny everyone, paint another! :buttrock:
PS, cool animation Andrew.
Rebecca, great idea for a thread! I plan on getting involved in all of this CGtalk biznaz, but my home computer is currently fried and I'm restricted to pencil and paper. It's actually been a bit refreshing working outside of the computer however, I haven't mastered Corel Painter yet, so I'm a bit restricted yet with my wacom. I'm contemplating whether I should upgrade from 8 to 9, or just tough it out until Corel Painter X, whenever that may be. :)

This isn't actually very quick speedpaint - I planned to do a bigger scene with these characters and spent some time looking for references etc., but it didn't work out so I just wanted to finish the piece quickly and get it out of my eyes :)

In this piece I got ispired by listening to Brian Eno's Dunwich Beach, Autumn 1960 track from the On Land album. I guess this is the first time I painted something _just_ the way I visualized it. Took ~1h.

I tried more loose style this time, and just had fun for a couple hours. Himalaya and Tibet
have been a great inspiration to me, so I wanted to make a journey and paint something
of that world far away. These both are partly from photo references - background, light
and colors are mostly my own.

A sketch for this scene I did almost three months ago back in the army. I had some time free during the one week drill in the forest after my watch, and I sat down reading some poetry. I got inspired by a poem about Cortez and his landing to the new land, and I drew this and couple of other pictures. I think I'll do few pictures more about this same theme, this was the easiest sketch to do :)

thnx korpi... I did that in a hurry (while stealing time to chemistry ;) ) so there are major flaws.Anyway, more than anatomy, I was concentrating on light and texture ...trying to capture brom's atmosphere/style cause I want to incorporate it on my spectacular 2d entry...
I'm looking to recreate the directional feeling of the stroke on canvas, but I can't find the perfect settings. In this one I created texture with the grainy blender and used the oily brush variant for the main colours. I'd very much like to drop using the blender, but the problem is that the brush is too loaded with colour and covers the canvas texture too much (while the grainy blender recreates the texture). Only at the end of the stroke I get the desired 'transparency'. I tried lowering the 'load' variable, to simulate little paint on the brush but I can't seem to get it working.
I'm open to suggesions... cause, your works are really good and inspiring.

Henrik and m@ - your last pieces both ooze with atmosphere.
So many great speedies recently, goro as usual , and Spyro is on a roll (I've spent my fair share of time riding that subway and your Spidey rocks :buttrock: ).
Vahn - I love the saturated colors and those hills. Perhaps lay a couple more brushstrokes to the lower left as the canvas looks blank in that spot, rather than flowery like surrounding areas. Regardless, good schtuff.
All of this stuff is just great, keep it up. Feel free to post any step by step pieces that show your workflow. :D I'm a bit miffed as to how many layers I'm comfortable working with and how to work in the great texturing that I'm seeing in many of these pieces. I wouldn't mind seeing a few of your methods.

Bin - Very cool images.
Goro - I'm not terribly familiar with Dylan Cole or at all, so I can't say whether or not you beat him at his own game, but I can say that your image itself didn't fail. It has a great sense of depth. You also have knack for working in all of that flora and fauna into your images, your jungles are full of life. Perhaps the colors desaturate a bit too quickly? Anyways, I'm going to leave speedpainting jungles to the pros. :D Well done!
Annisahmad - I love all of your grand scenery. Like Goro you use such large and definite brush strokes, yet the painting appears very detailed. That's along the lines of what "Sargent" was known and famous for, eh? Also, thanks for commenting on one of my old graphite portraits on DevArt, I just caught your comment recently. :)
m@ - I'll be spending my fair share of time staring at you last painting, so fantastical! I can hardly believe that the images in this thread are "speed paintings." I'm presently working with Corel Painter 8 and nothing is speedy about my work at present, although I'm having a blast with the program. ^_^;
Keep at it, everyone. Good stuff all around.
