Uuuh, I like those glowing things (the spikes and the cables)! The modelling is also very well! Only the Head of the guy looks a bit strange. Maybe you should make his cheeks a bit wider. I hope the textures will be as great as the modelling, with rusty metal look! Good job so far...

Roadrunner

Edit: Now I see the last Pic! With this lighting I see it's you should make a wider chin instead of wider cheeks...

Hi kotsos

Nice modeling and design an imteresting concept, although I would show more of the making of,

all the models, as they like to see how you make everything rather than the finished object.

nice work!

i went for a more stylised look on the central hero (than my concept i mean, i got rid of the more clunky look)The other humans will have similar suits, but their faces won't be visible.
i also modelled the gun.

i have a problem with my internet connection so i can't update as often as i would like to...

keep posting, as always i "demand" your comments

thanx for the comments guys...

everything is work in progress, but the head is modelled after my own photo i'll send a close-up render when i can... (that's how my cheek bones r, non-existent). this isn't my pc so i only have what i was intending to post...

thanx again

Re: to Patina

i'll bring wireframes (smoothed and non-smoothed) next time, probably the day after tomorrow... (plus i keep all my models in stages so anybody can check that my work is mine)

if i had max installed on this pc i would send them right away.

on second thought i might be able to update from another friend's pc in about 3 hours so check in i might have updated (he is also into cg so he has max installed) and i have my models in the cd with the posts (as i said earlier: i have no net (bouhouhou))

i'll be waiting for comments on the wires n stuff

bye

Plus everything has no textures on them (except the face, it's from another project of mine)

It's just a blinn shader with cranked up highlights, that's how it should look...
it won't look like that in the end cos i'm going to texture

OK guys yesterday i was lookin around in the forum and i discovered that i have to help u guys, send tips and techniques and stuff in general. i didn't know. sorry

so from tomorrow u are getting the storyline finished concept of the whole scene (not just chars n stuff). and techniques that i use for modelling

sorry i didn't know (it's my first challenge) so i'll start with modelling

how do i model:

at first is the concept (i change it if i see it sucks)draw rough sketches, lots of them especially for characters it's a huge plus, when u r familiar with the character you can model him on the fly. i noticed that most of my friends who can't sketch as easily as i, can't model characters or have enormous difficulty, so start sketching. (another tip don't model your own face it becomes obssesive you are never happy with the way it looks and everybody u know says it looks like someone else and everybody that doesn't know you says it looks just like u)
plus i also find that anatomically incorrect models can collect more WOWs than anatomically correct ones. huge deltoids and non existent waists for example might seem like something out of a comic, but they add extra WOW-iness to your superhuman create - ures (creatures sounds kinda bliach).
i start with a primitive (usually a box, cylinders for chest, arms and legs),then i convert to editable poly and use symmetry, shell and turbosmooth.deleting polys, extruding edges creating shapes in general is easy cos u have show end result on, thus u see what u r modelling (or what max is modelling for u). armor plates and machinery can be modelled in seconds. also use vertex weights and edge creease saves modelling time. chamfer stuff or use chamfer cylinders and boxes (extended primitives) u will see a huge difference when that narrow highlights appears on the edgez of a model.

i make the base shape for the gun (example) then i duplicate or detach pieces giving them other shapes depending on the concept. after the main modl is finished i add different details with primitives ,copying, resizing, multiple copies (previously i modelled everything attached, you know shapes and stuff by extruding the base model i discovered that in mechanical modelling this is stupid since it takes too much time for a small amount of detail)

then i make things like wires and hozes (the line tool in max is the best for this) u just turn on render mesh in the modify panel.try to make them attach to things like small cylinders so they look as part of the model.

detailing, another trick is using the lattice modifier on either a clone or parts of the object this makes missing panels and panelling in general a piece of cake
for armor, reusing the parts that u have already modelled is a quick shortcut, especially if u want more than one set of suits.
another trick is random extrudes (i use a script from blur studios (thanx guys))
and i use advance painter (another script) for painting on thing like vines

i also use z brush, the only problem with zbrush is that it exports to maya and the geometry from the import to max is problematic, it doesn't soft-select correctly and generally doesn't behave as i want it to. so i use it for objects i know will be staticn (non0deformable)
zbrush can give good detailing on character wounds, scars, wrinckles and generally bumps.
the arm in the alien model is modelled in zbrush

also a technique i started using some months ago for stills, is to texture in photoshop straight on the final image, thus avoiding the painfull process of uvmapping for one still
dirt and most of th imperfections surfaces have can be added in post (the only problem is when u r dealing with reflections). the alien is a composite of a clay render (a render with only a skylight and gi enabled), a scanline render with one light and texturing in photoshop (just 2 minutes in photoshop) plus a duplicate of the whole image with a wave/riplle filter.

shading: falloff is one of the maps i use more frequently, u can do alsorts of cool stuff like fading edges, glowing insides(like subsurface but a fake).

another thing on modelling characters flowlines and quads is the basic idea. u stick to quads till they interupt the flowlines. what i mean is don't get obsessed with quads stick to the flowlines. plus for hi-res modelling insert geometry for wrinkles and places where the skinoverlaps, u will see a differnce when u skin the model and use the skin-morph modifier in max 7 where u can make wrinkles that show when the arm bends when the fingers bend, even veins and stuff.

i'm currently working on my my BA research on muscle simulation once it's finished i'll upload it to my site(which is under construction as u might of noticed, since i don't have net and we are making it with a friend of mine (ARIS, aka brutus, aka gray)and it will host some other friends to ( if u are interested mail me)). in my research i explain ways of simulating muscle movement and things like vein and wrinkle protrusion(thus the correct modelling of them).

ok this is all for now, i'll check in tomorrow (as u know i don't have net at home)
so bye

and i am waiting for comments on this mini tutorial

Hey Kwsta! I really found helpful your looong explanation!

I'm more of the "Everything on 3D" school...but for such needs and deadline would be a nice idea....

Also your work is progressing really well! Nice to meet your face by the way! Agree with neble for the upper foot of the suit. The gun looks quite interesting....

The image i'm making is based on a love story.

OK this guy goes to get his girl from the disgusting alien scum that have a space ship built on the carcass of a dead space monster. the civilizations of the Humans and the Dreaal come into conflict near the planet of Gresmo876. While the hero of the humans tries to get his girlfriend the human marines get into a fight with Dreall Commandos. Mechs and warriors fight stinkin aliens. While all this crap is happening the hero's girlfriend get's shot. She dies in his arms, in the middle of a Human Meta-Marine Squad fighting to protect their leader. In his anger he unleashes an Extreme Surge of Power known as the Sword of Justice. Cleansweeps all scum, but has lost his true love. That was quick

My image-story is titled: "Battle for Lost Love"

So the posting of the finished concept is going to wait for tomorrow... sorry unexpected events.

Hi guys and Merry Christmas(although a bit late)

Hope you like my progress on the rocket launcher, i'm going to post a rendition with both the gun and the rocket launcher.

Now i'm working on the Hero model changing it a bit to make the rest of the marines.

Plus i've posted in an early concept on the princess, i'm also going to use her in the beam of energy coming from the hero, we'll see.

Thanx for the crits

@ DimitrisLiatsos: Yeah, it could be more real like, it was just a fully reflective material,
i haven't used GI on him except for a couple of clay-renders and i haven't textured him, so i still have stuff to do. i will also do a lot of texturing str8 on to the final image (you can see a previous post i have 3 minutes in photoshop and u get bullet holes and some dirt) plus i'm going to composite lots of passes to get final results, which i want to be more fantasy like. Now if you mean life like in proportions and stuff, i think the work i will do on the princess will showcase my anatomy and real life modelling, i just want these guys to look like there from somewhere like Warhammer 40k or something epic knight style maybe even metallic horses-bikes, like the one u have, but with a jet turbo engine.... hovering and stuff. Howdy...

While he looks cool with that shader on him I'd caution you on getting too enamoured with this one chracter and especially, one material shader.

Think of your scene, the context of it and how these characters fit into the overall scene. If you loose that focus your final image will loose focus as well.

Still... he does look cool..

Nice work so far!

Thanx guys for the crits

@terraarc: yeah the reflective material was just a crap thing i did to see what i would get out of it, i just posted it cos i thought (still think) he looks quite dark and cool and dark and cool...

@cgkrusty: sorry man i didn't see your post (what a lame excuse), well if you look at my previous posts you will see that i don't use a reflective shader, i just posted it cos i think it looked quite cool.... anyways my concept design features several of these soldiers so i want them to look cool individually to make the whole composition stronger... i'll post a clay-render with an approximation of their final positioning in the image... it looks kinda like marble decorations on temples... i'll have to post to show u what i mean...

probably friday, i'm working late and i don't have 3dsmax here (it would be quite slow on this machine)

thanx guys and i am not going to use the full reflective shader-material in the final composition

anyways goodbye for now, i might post some helpers, if anyone wants them

I like some of the tips alot. Thanks, it will probably help me out. Hope it goes well for you in the competition, It seems it will.

All the best.

Hi guys

@Dimitris Liatsos: Thanx man. I just like to do that with the vines. I did it once to test the idea so now whenever i have a clay render (gi that is) i go cover it with vines. The sky matte is made out of 2-3 photos with different blending modes and some color adjustment...Plus the soldier on the left has a simple dirt layer with multiply on it...

@mireneye: i hope other people like it, but you didn't need to post the whole thing again.anyways thanx...

You modelling is awesome! Also your explanetion of your workflow is very interesting...! The way you detail stuff etc... Just very cool! And: reaaaaly interesting and nice mini-tut!

also a technique i started using some months ago for stills, is to texture in photoshop straight on the final image, thus avoiding the painfull process of uvmapping for one still
I've also been thinking of this way of texturing last times... :) To me its also sad to have to UVmap etc a complete scene, júst for one pic! For sure because you have to take care of the mapping right while your modelling... (modelling every minor detail is very fun, but not if you have to map and so on, every detail...) Now I'm thinking of rendering a clay after all modelling and painting on it in PS; save it and project it as a planar map ón my scene, and tweak the specular etc, and thén render the final... :) Would work lots more artist-friendly :arteest: and lots less techically :)

Good luck & happy newyear :) ,

requesting crits

does everybody think the breasts are ok (perfectly shaped i would add)?

do u see her as ur fantasy girl?

anyways any kind of crits are welcome...

niki
01-07-2005, 12:17 PM
well ..the breast is better than before but I think that you should enlarge it just a little bit, there is too much space among the breasts ..
keep it up!

arturro
01-07-2005, 12:20 PM
The breasts themselve are ok, but in compersion to the chest they seem too small. But not too much. And should be a little but closer to each other. But the shape is realy good.

koyimaold
01-07-2005, 12:31 PM
Yeah i had them bigger but every1 critted on (friends out of cgtalk) that they were quite big
anyways i'll post more in a while
making the shape is difficult making them bigger is a piece of cake

@niki: yes maybe you're right, a bit closer will probably do the trick
@arturo: i made a female once with huge knockers, pretty funny, till mu dad saw it and told me i had wrong ideas about female anatomy and what is beautifull, but slightly bigger won't harm anyone....

anyways thanx and every1 who has an opinioncan post it, crits are always welcome

PeterSanitra
01-07-2005, 01:34 PM
i think that the breast big enough, maybe too big. All the guys just say: BIGGER!! BIGGER!!:-)
I would make it smaller. look for Niki`s avatar for reference:thumbsup:

I think that topology of the mesh is not great. The lines should copy the natural shape of body. No parabola, hyberbolas around the legs. it looks like you just pull the vertex, because it wasn`t low enough:-) but if the model will look ok, and you will not animate it, to hell with topology.

I would suggest if u want to be sure for her topology ...to look at

arturro

cool works, cool design, but man!!! why it's so damn big? everything looks so huge and I totally don't like that:) it's hard to see something. Make it all smaller, and it will be good. In my opinion of course:)

koyimaold
01-07-2005, 02:19 PM
@ darkone :animating a dead princess? interesting...
well i'll make better use of my vertices next time, i'll send pics tomorrow...
anyhow i did a test skin, using biped(after i added the arms, which i haven't posted yet) and it deformed quite good round the knee) anyhow it's just for simple posing and the shape is what counts in this case...

see ya

@arturo: my website was designed on 19" monitor display
everything looked tiny (desktop res of 1600x1200
i couln't even read my own text
1024x768 is the res of the images used as backrounds

i would like crits on the images (not so much the layout)

arturro
01-07-2005, 03:42 PM
I also have 19' but 1280x960, and believe me, it's too big. I don't mean the background pictures, they are very good, I mean only the text in the menu. These buttons are too huge for me:) The pictures are realy good. You are a good artist. Your hand there is most impressive to me. I would only make the fingers a bit longer. Heads are also on a high level, only shave the hero:)

ok, I leave your site in peace and wait for next stunning updates here:twisted:

Hello kotsos!

Nice progress you have here....The lady surely needs some work on various rather delicate parts ... (aka a$$ and b00bs)...I think they both luck some gravity......
Suggestion....If this lady is not be moving....why not model her on final position?

Anyway...best of luck and magic potion for your effort mate!!:bounce:

I'll just go and check your website too.....:)

neble
01-09-2005, 01:07 AM
The bottom half looks a little too male for me. What would happen if you pulled the hips down a little, pulled in the stomach and thinned it all a bit? I just think it needs a little tweaking, but then again it's difficult to pull off a human due to everyone having references around them. I like your effort, and wish you luck.

artemesia66
01-09-2005, 02:45 PM
I think her belly button is a bit low, and that's what's making her hips look sort of narrow and masculine. and move the breasts closer together, but someone already said that. Otherwise, looking good to my eye.

ixor
01-09-2005, 02:52 PM
I think that the model of the female is more of a shemale. If you take of the breasts the body is of a male man! The female body is more delicate and thinner. You are not working on a body builder kinda character you are working on a female. Make the thighs thinner, the waist smaller, leave the pelvis as is. Work on it and take as reference your girlfriend...

@ixor:(les malakies karga)

have u seen britney spears (perfect body in my opinion), she has a perfect round ass, perfect boobs that don't hang , muscles on arms, legs, belly and she is petit. i'm dissapointed in ur lack of vision for the perfect woman body (although it is a matter of taste)

@artemisia66: i'm posting an update, u r a woman so i think u can understand the bodytype i'm looking for

@terrarc: (iparxoun k ginaikes pou den tous epireazei toso i varitita) just because in real life all women don't have perfect bodies doesn't mean we have to make all women so they have saggy bodies, young women have perky breasts, tight firm buttocks(i decided to use her on an other project so i'm going to work more on her)

@neble: male bodies as i can see from my own (which is quite well formed and masculine) don't have a waist we have a triangle shape, she has a waist and firm nice buttocks

generally take a look at he next update and i want more feedback, but keep in mind i'm going for the britney(almost perfect look), plus ihave not used photo reference it's just the image in my head of britney's body

This is going just amazing...Well Done...!

Keep it up but don't forget about.... u know what! hehehe

About the princess, u realy must enlarge the height of the distance from her lower back to the head... Spine is too short!!! looks unatural and is spoiling every detail that u made to this model... usually the height of the human body takes about 52-58% for legs and the spine with head takes the rest...! Keep it up! U Rock!
