View Full Version : In-house stuff never goes out
Fielding 08-27-2002, 02:46 AM Yes, we all bought the main program, but the people which improves them makes a little better version. For example Blizzard makes MAX a little stronger with their scripts and plug-ins: but where are they? So they use MAX 6, when we use 5. But dont think its not important. They really make very good things. So do you know why dont they distribute them like Blur?

I think they do most of their stuff with Max 2.5 actually... Talent is a little hard to distribute. ;)

John Burnett works at Blizzrd, and has provided a few scripts here.
And yea Im sure youll find Blizzard and large places like that are the last to upgrade their copys of Max etc. often its too hard and risky to upgrade during a contract. MOst places are still using Max 3 because of its stability AFAIK.
Saying that we upgraded as soon as we could :D

Stability and the fact that you don't want to migrate mid project to a new version in case your special tools or plugins need updating (which is the last thing that your programmers are going to care about).
I think its an unwritten rule that you never upgrade while you are working on a project, this not only applies to the software that you are using on the project but also OS udpates, hardware, you are just asking for trouble if you do.

Actually I'd say the MAX production community is one of the most generous. John is one of the main techies at Blizzard and he freely distributes his tools (after they've been production proven) as mentioned above. All of the plugins Scott and Steve wrote at Blur have been freely available (and many incorporated into MAX). The scripts Neil and I wrote at Blur have always been available and updated on a regular basis. However I don't think you'll see much new in that area as none of us work there anymore.
Still you'll always find tools at maxunderground.com and scripts at scriptspot.com. It's really the perogative of the developer/client when it comes to releasing in-house developed tools. It's been my experience however that often much of the research and development that goes into a tool results in something that is very specific and only useful in rare circumstances.
