I luv et! That is a great look for cg. At first I couldn't tell if the bg was a still or not..maybe a mix? Anyway, great characters. Very well done. I downloaded the small one, but loved it so much I'm getting the big butt one. The intro is awesome too.
11-24-2004, 11:20 PM
DUDE! That was awesome! I loved it!!
The intro was great.
The clip itself was wonderful, lovely work on the animation there!
The only bit I didn't like the animation of was when he bashed into the clif, I felt that could have happened with a bit more force.
But it was funny nonetheless.
Music was very well suited, characters were great, animation was great, story was great...
all adds up to a great clip there!
11-25-2004, 04:27 AM
Whoa! That was awesome! I LOVE the animation, texturing, music, and use of color. I also adore your camera work; it fits the style so well and I want more! The characters are awesome and I can't wait to see more of this from you!!
11-25-2004, 03:04 PM
Technically well done, nice animations, great design. Lovely intro.
I gotto say that was top notch stuff- well done,

11-25-2004, 07:58 PM
Great work, congratulations!
11-25-2004, 08:52 PM
Very well done! I love the design of the characters and the environment. The animation is really good. I agree the the intro is done very nicely and the transition from black and white to color with the change in sound quality really works. Congrats and best of luck! :)
11-25-2004, 08:55 PM
totally front page quality, Very awesome work! I love the character design, and the animation is really top-notch.
The camera work bothered me a bit, the constant zooming in + out, but overall, very nice.
11-25-2004, 09:35 PM
awesome work!! i loved nearly everything about it... animation, rendering... camera work didnt bother me at all. i thought it kept it in a very cartoony / warner bros spirit, which is no easy task in cg. great job!!
11-25-2004, 10:41 PM
Great work!! This is a really fun short with excellent design and execution throughout. I look forward to seeing more from you! Definately front page material.
11-25-2004, 10:58 PM

11-26-2004, 09:50 AM
Great work - that deserves 5 stars. Modelling, animation, music, story, style... fantastic. Out of curiosity, what software are you using?
This is...well...GOOD work:buttrock:
I really like your characters and the animation!
The enviroment is lovely. Like the grass...
11-26-2004, 03:45 PM
Yes, very awesome indeed. i'm really curious what software and renderer you used.
11-26-2004, 05:46 PM
Very, very nice. the soundtrack reminds of another french cartoon I enjoyed a while ago. Stupid invaders I think was the name. I beleive they even made a game out of it.
11-26-2004, 07:46 PM
that was great, i love the style you got goin, very cartoony, it really has that traditional animation feeling, 2 me n-e-way. Textures look great! Good Work!
11-26-2004, 08:35 PM
HILARIOUS....this is professional work...u should be working for pixar!
11-26-2004, 09:10 PM
Damn that was fun. Waiting for the next one :D
11-27-2004, 01:12 AM

Awesome man! Perfect charctor design and actions~
Looking forward a longer film!
11-27-2004, 09:52 AM
First of all, big thank you for all the comments. We're glad you liked it. cheers. nice one !
And now a few answers to all the questions :
The background is indeed a mix of 2D and 3D. Texture was camera mapped onto the whole surface. Big time saver.
Our renderer of choice is Lightwave. Yep. That's right. Lightwave's butt may be getting old and saggy, but the old bastard can still benchpress a few gigabytes of data without breaking a sweat. ( man, if that doesn't get us on he beta list ...)
In terms of Character Animation, we tested a few different solutions and ended up using XSI foundation. Exported point clouds and built .mdd files from there. Worked pretty well, sort of...:)
We're currently working on our 2nd in-house project, "project Kumita", and we'll get some WIP shots on the website (http://www.alligatoon.com) as we sink our teeth deeply into this one.
Big Thanks again.
Franck & Laurent aka *The Alligatoon Crew*
11-27-2004, 02:55 PM
awesome work ! so you modeled, textured and rendered in Lightwave then rigged/animated in XSI ? how do you bring the animation back to Lightwave ? and can you continue to animate in lightwave using the rig you created in XSI ?
11-28-2004, 12:25 AM
I just love the cool look of it
Truly inspire :bounce:
Very nice! Love the intro with the old/new cut both visually and sound.
The render is very smooth, great animation! Made me laugh. :)
Keep em coming! :)
11-28-2004, 06:54 AM
Great job guys, I actually laughed a lot...
The animation is very expressive, including the camera movements, good story telling...
I liked it... a lot, and I am very picky on animations....
11-29-2004, 05:41 PM
OMG! GREAT characters!! I like them very much. I love the facial animations, I see you have focused on that. Everything looks superb visually and the animation is good too. Plus the 3D is very nicely integrated in the 2D backgrounds.
The short is very funny too, and that's a good thing for shorts.
11-30-2004, 06:38 AM
I would love to know exactly what you used Lightwave for, and what you used XSI for. Lightwave/XSI for modeling? What about texturing? What about the grass swaying in the breeze? WOW! I cannot get over how great this is!
I'd also be interested in knowing if you used any Radiosity/ GI or just good old fashioned lighting tricks.
11-30-2004, 11:01 AM
front page! 5 stars from me . great animation .
11-30-2004, 12:40 PM
Can someone please tell me something that's not cool on this? Anyone? Me neither.
Boy, that's a hell of an animation! So cool! As another people said, the characters concepts are great, the animation is great, the looks are great!
Even the name of the company is great! I mean, Aligatoon?! You got to be kidding! Even the name is entertaining! :applause:
Particularly about the animation style, I like this fast and funny way you animated the characters. I suppose Ice Age was an influence on this. Any comments about influences?
I'd say that this is a short movie you watch with a smile on your face. :)
Five stars. Proficient job.

I just gotta throw in my two cents...
That is astounding! Great work!
10 stars out of 5!
Teach me master!!
12-01-2004, 05:27 AM
Great great great great job. This looks awesome. I love how the environments came out - they look painted. Just beautful. With small groups putting out awesome work like this it makes you wonder how crap like Jimmy Neutron gets on the air.
Edit: Cool camera work too!
12-01-2004, 03:55 PM
Well ,thanks again guys ! Much appreciated…
Don’t know what else to say really … :)
Ok, about the workflow. It’s quite simple actually, everything in Lightwave except for rigging and character animation. When Char Anim is over, we extract points’ indices and positions for each frame, get that into LW and write nice clean mdds for each character. For the moment, it’s a bit slow but that should be fixed when Mark Wilson updates Point Oven (http://www.ef9.com/ef9/PO.htm) to support XSI. Hey Mark, if you’re reading this: Great job with Point oven and we’re really looking forward to the update.
Hi Helder, how’s it going ? You should really do some PR for us ! :scream:
Well, your animation isn’t too bad either. But 15 min, man, that’s quite a challenge for an animation. Turned out pretty good nonetheless.
Comments about influences ? yeah ,sure. And you’re dead on talking about Ice Age. That was a major influence in terms of animation. And, ya know, Tex Avery, the Looney tunes and, last but not least….Pixar, of course.
And also have you seen the trailer for Madagascar ? We’re huge fans of the look around here. Should be funny to watch.
Anyway, big thanks to everyone.
Franck & Laurent, over at Alligatoon’s.
12-02-2004, 10:05 AM
could you make your next animation longer?
Heber G Conde
12-02-2004, 10:25 AM
Incredible timming, posing and acting! Really funny animation!
I love the render and character design too! Perfect!
The camera´s behavior is very interesting too! And the name is also funny!
Amazing job - 6 stars!
12-03-2004, 02:20 AM
I love the character design. I love DD's walk. I got a little tired of watching their antennae/ ears settle into place after a quick head movement. Maybe there's a little too much of that... maybe I wanted some more action... less broad. Y'know tiny stupid nitpick.
12-03-2004, 04:22 AM
Really nice look and feel to this animation! Nice style and movement with the characters. Lightwave still does have a few tricks up it's sleeve!! Hope to see more from Aligatoon soon. One question: Did you use Sasquatch for the grass?
12-04-2004, 03:25 AM
I'll definately be keeping my eye on this...i'm so overwhelmingly impressed. the animation is so well done...you hardly see 3D animation with the same energetic and exagerative qualities of 2D...everyone tells me it's all over the place, in most cases i'd disagree...but not here.
super! those chaters are great the bg is lovely, the sound also very nice just super
12-06-2004, 02:04 PM
Very nice work guys. Cool look, funny designs, fun details in the gag... I like it.
Maybe it's a little bit 'violent' for 4 years old kids, isn't it? :D
Keep up the good job .
12-06-2004, 03:50 PM
That was so awesome, everything about this is just really really really nice...but I agree it felt like he slowed down before hitting the cliff...awesome stuff, love the mixed bg...shaders and textures are nice!
12-07-2004, 09:20 AM
Excellent. Very cool character design. Camera work was also good, very complimenting of the comedy. You created a great environment, and the title sequence on top of it all made me really want to see an actual series of it. Keep it up!
12-10-2004, 03:08 PM
Dude, I love it! Excellent character design. I felt the animation got a lil wanky when he flew around, otherwise, really awesome! Good Luck..
12-13-2004, 12:04 PM
Yup, I agree with everybody else. I want more! :D
Your animation has the perfect cartoon timing that many wannabees lack.
12-13-2004, 10:48 PM
Super cool! :) Nice characters and environments. The animation was nice too.
Keep up the great work!
I think it's totally shitty
not well done
not funny at all
characters have no expressions
colours are awfull
12-14-2004, 05:17 PM
If i see another animation where the camera zooms in on the character whos looking back at the audience expecting a laugh, i think im going to go crazy.

gros respet pour vous et j'attend avec impatience vos prochaines creations, trop terrible!
12-15-2004, 02:52 PM
That was very well done. Saturday morning stuff there man. Reminds me of Wile E. Coyote a little bit. Very funny.
12-15-2004, 03:06 PM
I very much like animation and characters, or say modeling and atmosphere. Also characters have very funny way of reacting to what's happening.
I respect your decission to choose static camera with zooming. But I think this makes the spectator less involved in the action, couse he is allways outside the action and never looking through someone else's eyes, or changing his position.
12-15-2004, 04:34 PM
First of all, my congratulations for this first project. It's nearly close to perfection in technical terms.
I agree with you Majstic, but keeping the frame in the same axis is a really good balance between naration and production. As this project is a preview of a serie, it was really the best thing to do to limit the creation time of the background and best focus on the animation of the caracters... which give this short movie all it's personality.
Frank, you told me to give you my appreciations...
This is really a great short, and if you manage to find a good productor, i'll be happy to learn XSI :)
I wish you all the best and i'm looking forward to see the other scripts and stories.
12-15-2004, 05:12 PM
This is really, really splendid! Nice animation and dizz. This is entire, a little simply like a OGGY (my favourite) cartoon movie, from Gaumont. The monster is like one of three cockroach, from Oggy, and dog like a cat Oggy. http://www.oggy.com/
PS Sorry, this is my first association after watching Atomic Monsters.
12-15-2004, 07:31 PM
fantastic :bounce: - very fresh look...
hope you post more.
12-15-2004, 10:11 PM
Great stuff. Really enjoyed the animation. Nice timing & colors. Loved the expressions on the little jumping critters face. Top notch work
12-16-2004, 01:25 AM
Incredible work. I laughed out loud. Thanks for sharing.
12-16-2004, 03:16 AM
fantastic work, well done. :)
12-17-2004, 07:59 AM
i love when the little monster yells :)
You guyz will make money
12-21-2004, 12:04 PM
Very nice work, I loved it. I really liked your texturing style. Everything looks great.
12-21-2004, 12:41 PM
That was great but I have a question,
before the first rock is destroyed you have a longshot where you can see everything, but the rock that's supposed to be the big monsters butt isn't there. After you take a close up of the roach and you zoom out suddenly the monster's ass(Rock is there).
I consider that as a flaw but you could have done it on purpose.
12-21-2004, 02:08 PM
I noticed that as well Fierr.
I loved the movie and the graphics, great job on the sounds.
Very nice, 5 stars!
12-28-2004, 07:39 AM

01-09-2005, 05:27 PM
First of all, we 'd like to wish a very happy new year to everyone who stumbles upon this thread.
Now, we would like to thank the people who contributed to this thread for the great feedback Who knows, that might even help us in our attempts to sell the series, with all these positive comments and all. Great confidence booster, no matter what, so big thank you's.
There'll be more of Atomic Monsters in 2005. Not the first half because Alligatoon has been commissioned to supervise the animation on a teaser for a feature film project ( can't tell much more, sorry ...) and then we've got to finish project Kumita which had to be put on hold for the same reason. but we'll be working on some new scripts and stuff so be on the look out for that.
We'll also update the site with some kumita images before the end of this month so we hope you like them as well.
Lastly, special thanks to Baby for the Banana Award.
Our very first award... and bananas are, by far, are ... our bestest favorite fruits of all times !! ...what an amazing coincidence !!
man, we're just overwhelmed :D
Franck & Laurent @ Alligatoon
sure it's the first one of a long list :bounce:
01-11-2005, 02:18 PM
