Title: Smoldering
Name: Rui Padinha
Country: Portugal
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop

This started with me fiddling around with some planet surface textures I got from thw Web.

A few asteroids later and after some layers of smoke rendered in Max and composited in Photoshop, I ended up with this piece...

I'm not really happy about it, but I kind of like the idea... smoldering asteroids in space... it truly tests your "suspension of disbelief" :)

Anyway, hope you like it

Very cool.

looks like one of those epic shots in a sci-fi flic before they pan over to a space ship orbiting nearby. if you were just "fiddling around", I'd like to see some of your serious work. it must be breath takng.

Two thumbs way, way up!!

I think those asteroids look really believable. Did you use procedural or bitmap textures to create them?

Cool picture!

Cool picture! :thumbsup:Umm actually they dont... Astroids are not on fire just so all of you know. Astroids are in the vacuum of space, and as we know it is very cold in space. Almost all astroids/meteors scientists have studied contain lots of dust/ice/metals/and masses of rock.

Btw great job on the scene :) I still like it.

Hi everyone and thanks for your words!

Pendrim 2020 : Serious work? Man... I'd really wish I had the time for it! Well... actually I'm trying to really give it my all in the Space Opera Contest... let's see how that turns out!

The most serious piece of work I did lately you can check here www.arqui300/cosmix (http://www.arqui300/cosmix)
I did a good part of the modelling, and all the texture and lighting work for this 100% Portuguese short film, which was a major achievement for all our team (all three of us...:) )

Sars3D : You're absolutely right... all the time I was working on this I tought: man, am I pushing the "suspension of disbelief" on this one... even cheap Sci-Fi movies don't strech it this far... er... well, some of them actually... nevermind...
Anyway, it was fun, and that truly was the bottom line for me on this piece

Joana : All hail the Flower Queen, Lady of mushrooms and wet balconies
(private joke ppl)!!!

I still think you did a great job :) Works really well in the scene... I will be following your space opera entry and checking out your site. Best of luck.

Sars3D, Rui, I think this picture is at least slightly believable. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/grin.gif If those "asteroids" were coming from the planet pictured, then something absolutely catastrophic must have launched them out there; the matter would be quite hot, most likely, especially if the objects had just escaped the atmosphere. The "steam" or smoke could be caused by liquids boiling inside and venting off -- also somewhat plausible under the "ejected matter" premise. They could also be asteroid fragments careening through the atmosphere towards the planet. They would heat up incredibly and vent and frozen elements inside, a la Tunguska blast.

Anyway, I'm through rationalizing the content. This is a pretty incredible render, way above my capabilities. Rock on!

Also, this is my first post. Hi guys!

b44cc21: By all means, please do rationalize it, that's what constructive criticism is all about :) !

I couldn't agree with you more, I did have the intention to buid upon the image and add additional content... The general idea was that the smoldering asteroids were the fragments of a moon that had bben blown up by an invading fllet. Two fighters would be seen flying among the charred rocks while in the background, a titanic battlecruiser would loom over the planet's surface, where there would be visible explosions... kind of an "invasion" motif...

The thing is, and I am a bit ashamed of saying it... I er... lost the "Max" file in a format operation. I do admit it was poor backup management on my part...

I could always render the ships separately and composite them with the smoke, because I still have the smoke layers in a psd file, but I also wanted to change a lot of stuff in 3D, namely the shape of some of the asteroids and the lighting... and so, I tought it better to just leave it "as is" and concentrate my attention on something else... like the "Grand Space Opera Challenge" :scream: !!!

And that's the whole unadulterated truth about this piece... and I ended up writing a lot longer than I had planned... yikes!

Thanks for your feedback and your crits mate, and take care

Nice image. I like the composition the only thing i really see at first glance is the depth. I see that the asteroids are in front of the planet but a blur would make it more apparent, nothing harsh though just enough to separate your foreground from your background. I love the textures, really good.

Sagleon: hey, thanks! I suppose I can use some focal effect to enhance the pic... I lost the 3d file but I can tweak it up in photoshop. I'll try to do it later on, right now It's Grand Space Opera all the way... :)
