View Full Version : Open discussion about faciale animation
Nicool 08-26-2002, 09:32 PM Hello,
I would like to open the discution on faciale animation. What is better : preparing differents blends shapes before, or setup the head with bones and other systems to animate immediatly???
In my view, head steup is the best to obtain the right expression. But I know it's possible to superpose different % of each pose of blend shapes to choice the part of expressions.
What is your opinion??

Surely a blend of the two would be best?
From what I've read on these boards, it seems a major movement (ie Jaw) should be Boned, where as subtle movements (ie cheek "smile" muscles) should be clustered/blended.
There are various opinions on Spline bones for mouth deformation, but my opinion is that wighted cluster / blend shapes once setup are easer to use for that.

I did this face entirely with morf targets (and a couple small clusters on the lips).

You could use bones for the jaw, but then you'd have to add a morftarget as well, just to edit the final result - note the two small bumps on the corners of her lips in the gaping image. This is something I need to work on still, but it would have been much worse with only a bone-driven jaw. You have much more fine control with morfs.

I agree with Stahlberg...I like using just the blendshapes...cuz you can get more control over your end result...like mentioned..using a bone for the jaw...would just complicate your end result...
