View Full Version : The Best way for Realtime Animation
DanHartog 11-23-2004, 02:50 PM Hello All:scream:
I am looking for a way to animate my characters real time using a joystick or gamecontroller, no rendering but direct output to a screen.
As if it was a game and the (texured)character is controlled by a joystick/controller.
Can Kaydara motionbuilder 6.0 do the job or do I have to start messing around with a game-engine?
I don't want to re-invent the wheel on this one, any tips/urls are more then welcome:buttrock:

Hi Dan,
Yes, I believe with MotionBuilder can control a character realtime via a device or facial animation with the voice tool. I don't remember where (or if it's still mentioned in MotionBuilder 6 docs) but there was some licensing requirements when using the voice tool and live broadcasts. If you haven't already the demo is available here http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/motionbuilder/index.shtml
Good luck

SamSam, do you know where I can see examples of the output when you use this way of animating?
It would be interesting to see how far can I take textures and shading. Shading and Texture wise I would like my characters to look like the characters in Soul Caliburs, a bit high on the ladder for KM 6.0 but how far can I push it?

You might be able to extract the data from MB and send it to another app. I would think that you would need something like http://www.kaydara.com/products/online/index.php?filename=overview if MB was able to do that, I don't think there would have been a seperate app. for it.
Good luck

Yes, you can drive animation from a joystick, keyboard, etc.
(Check out the Aragor character and press "1" and you'll see him shoot his gun)
There are a couple of tutorials about doing this.
Kaydara is basically a game engine. Check out the 'devices' tab and you'll see the joystick. If you just drag that into the Viewer window and then drag in a Relations constraint, then drag the joystick into the Relations window, you'll start to get and idea of the stuff you can do.

Thanks for your replies. I'm convinced that I can animate with a joystick/controller but Im still very very curious about the output and the limitation of shaders and textures in real time output..:arteest:
Any good online tutorials maybe?
