I have been playing with max recently and i have had a few errors casuing the application to close. im offered to attempt to save the scene but i tend to backup alot anyway :D

BUT i noticed just now that my error happens only wen i add a light to my scene (target spot anyway-havent tested tham all) and as soon as i click on the modifer tab to alter the properties of said light

MAX HAS HAD AN ERROR BLAH BLAH BLAH WANNA SAVE etc.

then i click cancel and get my actaul error code:

any ideas

It could be a lot of things to be honest. One thing that you can start to do is check to make sure your system is OK.

Things that you can do include....
- Run a memory test (such as one found at http://www.mushkin.com/support/) to see if you have any bad memory in your system that should be removed
- Make sure your hard drives are defragged
- Make sure that you are up to date on the latest drivers, BIOS, OS service pack, and updates for your OS, hardware components (video card, sound card, motherboard chipset, etc.).
- Run Win NT4, 2K, or XP and not 9x/Me
- Make sure that you are not running some 3rd party plugin that is causing an error or issue
- Make sure that you're AV program is up to date (better yet, dont let it run at all when in 3D, AV programs are horribly problematic and cause lots of issues).

its a brand new install of xp on a brand new mother board with brand new ram

all drivers are up to date and no 3rd party plugins are intsalled with regards to this issue

what are "av programs"?

Even though it's brand new RAM, it could still cause your problem, especially with large memory modules. Luckily most memory modules have lifetime warranty, and stores don't cause any fuss about replacing them (at least, that's my experience)
