Hello. Thought I should begin to post some of the stuff im fooling around with at the moment:)

This Sunday I browsed a bit on www.aardman.com, and got inspired by some of their simple stuff, especially the orange slimeman which jumps off some letters with a wire onto his foot.

I wanted to make some small and simple animations with a very limited univers. So I made this lilttle fella: Kemo. Generally I guess you could describe him as a sad little Darth Vader-like mask strapped onto a contraption of body, two wheels and a ski. Dont ask:)

Still have to come up with a storyboard for his first venture into the dull gray-default-lambert world:)

Just shoot away with crits, comments whatever.

The animation is in the picture... just click.

hey aghill,

nice work, i love the character, really pulling on the heart strings, you had me all snivelly reaching for the tissues!
*ahem*
i just had a project at uni (on an animation course in Wales, UK) about George Maestri's animation of simple household objects and drawing character and emotion out of them, so i know how hard it is, but you've done a great job, i really like the eyebrows (kinda like peanuts') and hope they get put to more good use!

you've inspired me to pick up my toaster (my peice in George Maestri project) again, so look out in the next few days for that.

not much to crit really, the only thing i'd suggest for that intro would be to for him to mope off a bit slower (emphasise the sadness), or faster (if he's supposed to be scared),

great animation, show more soon! (you know you want to!)

You really have found a fun character. I like him. My only comment on the animation is that after he looks at the camera it would probably add if you reversed the spine in anticipation before he turns to take the momentum from the head swing to go off screen. Post some more of him when you get it!

Hi aghill, I think you're onto something with kemo
You've done well to convey his shyness and self doubt...Maybe I think you should pause him a moment in anticipation with his head hung, before he wheels away, to add to the impact of the recoil from the camera.
Keep it up

sumdumguy: I think your right with the anticipation and paued momentum.

Wilson 3d: yeah I think I tend to rotate the head more than the spine generally on this little fella.

Mungo J:Hehe, allways a good think to inspire people to animate:D The Eyebrows are actually not as good as I wanted them, but hey... didnt use to much time on blendshapes.

I'm animating a little sequence right now. Gonna be great I think - atleast thats my impression so far. Got the movement, spine- and headrotation set up, so now I gotta do some work on the eyes (not much there but a bit) and the headshapes. Its 1400 frames, so Its prolly gonna take some time:) hope I can get it rendered before nightfall so you can see it tomorrow:)

Hey! and thanks for your comments.

Hey aghill.. I like it! I like how you have used the blend shape to give him an upper lip. I will be pysched to see the rest of the animation you are working on now.

ulhellow people.

here it is: the update:)

http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfolders/upload4/Kemo_and_the_hole_header.jpg (http://www.zuljin.dk/thomas/video/KemoAndTheHole.mp4)

heres a .Mov version if you dont have mp4 (http://www.zuljin.dk/thomas/video/KemoAndTheHole_2.mov) :)

I have gotten alot of funny comments from this guy from friends the last days (like "damn he looks like on who havent been on the toilet for a while" or "I wanna play with the other kids, mom") :) yesterday when I had him created, I was really thinking on how to use him. He express so much sadness, and whenever he enter the scene you'd think that his situation could'nt get worse because his sour face. I thought that this was the most common underlying thought when he presentented himself. You feel with him pretty fast.

Like kenny in southpark, who's sadness is illustrated in his famlily-situation, gets wacked down even more, when you think it cant get worse, the little family loose their son...again. I thought this concept would fit really good with Kemo. Now its just so evily hard to come up with something to make this little fella more sad:)

As with the animation, and actual illustration, which is depicturized in the animation, I really tried to give as much life to him. Especially the small movements on his head. I was wondering if theres too little animation in his lip or something. I know for sure that some momentums are too stressed on him, and some are to long (atleast a little bit), but maybe its just because ive watched it too much:D

Please let me know what you all think about this little clip, both concept and animatio.

Could use some ideas on which scenes he would fit into, or which objects (in that gray dull world) he could interact with.

Thank you in advance:)

btw. click the pic to watch =]

what are you trying to do to us? i'll short circuit my keyboard if i cry anymore, you really are eeking out the emotion well, i'm impressed.

i love the way you haven't even shown him doing anything in particular yet, but you get the feeling he wouldn't want to - he's just sooooo sad!

i think you were right about the lip movement being too subtle, and i think you could maybe use momentum a little more as he is on wheels, but overall, great work mate.

in terms of interaction ideas, i can imagine him in the happiest places imaginable - fairgrounds, party etc. but still sad as ever (party hat put on but falling off or ball bouncing off his head as he depressedly ambles through). but do whatever you think is best for your character and expressing his emotional state - has he had girl troubles btw? i think i know how he's feeling!

Keep it up, hope to see more!

I know your character looks nothing like him, but is the name, "Little Kemo" a parody of Winsor McCay's "Little Nemo" animation from back in the early 20th century?

DaddyMack

Ok, you got me, I wanna see Kemo trying to get back outta the hole...Well done with your goal and approach...I hope to do a really defined and simple project one day too (sobs) well done aghill:D

I think some follow thru on his head when he boomps the side of the hole woud add a bit.

Update!!! Got another little movie from Kemos life.

You never know how long you got a friend, or if the friend really is a friend or just a mirror-image of yourself. Maybe your friend is your friend because he/she looks so much like you?

Crit is welcome:)

Have fun, the vid is in the pic.

Edit:

Thx for you feedback btw.

Andini: I actually made the name up because I thought it fitting... Something like Nemo, in Finding Nemo. Short name, not to conplicated and somewhat repeatitative.

No feedback? :(

hmm. anyways. Heres the new little movie:)

Its massive, its crazy, its actionpacked and its destructive - keep the kids at bay. This is going to be a hot one babyboy:)

ITS!

Hi aghill this is funny but you seem to be rushing a bit...Take your time and plan out the timing a bit more...I like the 'stop' in the last one but think he should struggle against the tornado (while it's in shot) before getting sucked up into it. It was hard to tell what was going on.
Still LYW:thumbsup:

BananaSalat: Hey. thanks:)

sumdumguy: Yeah your right. Its a tad too rushed the last one and the second too for that matter. I may have been focusing too much on that tornado (which btw. was a pain to make, since I dont have that much knowlegde in particles). When you say its hard to figure out whats going on, it may have something to do with the lighting. I was wondering wether I should change the light setup, I've used in the other shots, in the tornado-clip. I wanted the dull enviroment, but still have enough light to actually see the tornado in its full form. I dont think I succeded very good in that:)

DaddyMack

Hey aghill, I just meant when he gets pulled off into the tornado; it may be better to already have the tornado in shot, and have him pull against its force for a moment before being taken. That was kinda the only spot where I didn't get what was happenin. Hope that's clearer:shrug:

Hey sumdumguy. I talked with a teacher on my school about the last movie, and he said the same thing: that you get the impression that something isnt right when he ends up in the tornado. I'll get it remade when I have some time. I think I can handle the technical issues of him getting pulled directly into the tornado. I want to address alot more animation between forces on him and the tornado too. Maybe in the end let him slide sideways into the whirlwind.

Hi again all.

Ive been working with the tornado shot and made some changes to the way Kemo ends up in the damned thing.

The link is here (http://www.zuljin.dk/thomas/video/KemoAndTornado_2.mov)

Maybe it still needs some work. Maybe he still "float" to much when he goes airborne.

Furthermore im working on a new little animation. Im working on some concept for a wacko version of saint Peter (isnt that the name on the guy which greets all the spirits at heavens gate?). Its Kemo at Heavens Gate!

Ill post it when I have them ready:)

Here he is. Im thinking of a simple scene with a gate on two or three puffy skyes, with golden gates which are open. Still in the thinking process thisone. Ill have to sketch some more stuff out when I get the time.

Okay. Atlast I got this fella into 3D. No wings yet -Ill have to figure out how to do it=] Going to make his cloth with maya.

Still low poly, didnt get him smoothed. If your lucky youll see a walkcycle on him tomorrow=]

[Edit]

Okay Tested some feathers today. Thats gonna be a time consumer to get those right. Tested some deformation on the geometry too. heres a little early pose of him.

Hello Guys and girls. Its been a while since Ive posted some work here. Ive done alot of stuff to be honest.

As beforementioned the next little movie is to be called Kemo In Heaven. Here he will meet the old and grumpy Saint Peter. Ive got alot of ideas sketched and written. All I need to do is make it into a story board and get the scene and Saint Peter done (which seems to be a bigger problem thatn first thought).

Anyways, heres some pictures of the scene. Its still very much WIP:

http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfolders/upload1/Brigde.jpg

Kemo Will cross the this brigde on his way to the gates of Heaven

http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfolders/upload9/Scene2.jpg

This is what I got so far. Im thinking of simplifying the scene alot, like in the previours movies, so it wont break too much with the flow.

Furthermore I've got some stuff done on Saint Peter. Here it is:

http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfolders/upload3/SaintPeterWIP2.jpg

Furthermore Ive got a little playblast of a walk animated some days ago at a late hour.

Its right here (http://www.zuljin.dk/thomas/video/SaintPeterWalkTest.avi)

Do critizice all you want, I really could use some contructive ideas to the animation of Saint Peter. If someone got some nice ideas to the scene (like small different props Saint Peter would have at a place like this) do tell me:)

hey aghill,

great to hear 'lil kemo's still going, st. peter's looking great btw. (looks funny in only socks right now!)

regards the walk cycle the first things i noticed were that the feet stay horizontal and that the elbows stay straight.

i don't know much about religion, so i can't help with the props apart maybe from a clipboard with a list of those allowed in.

i hope you don't go too crazy with these scenes tho, as the simplicity was the brilliance of the previous animations...

looking good tho, keep it up!

Hey Mungo J, and thanks for the reply.

I have used the last days optimizing the rig, so I have better control and stuff. Your absolutly right about the feet in the walk. Thank you for pointing that party out - I had forgot to implement it in my foot-control:) I tried to work on the straight elbows in the animation I have done so far.

Furthermore I got the cloth working. Heres a test I did - Oh yeah the wings are textured now. Used a procedural texture. Dindt want to much realismn.

Heres a test I did (http://www.zuljin.dk/thomas/video/FlightTest.mov). Its the first animation where I used cloth. Hope you like it.

Im not far from beging satisfied with Saint Peter. Im moving on to the scene soon.

Mungo J

alright mate, loving the st. peter model,

the cloth is good also, it just seems right, it's not too complex and distracting, just reacting in the scene well.

the only thing i could say about the model of him is that the wings look a bit flat, maybe layer up more transparent versions of the featyhers already in place or something,

i don't know if you're looking for it, but animation crit-wise i think the jump into the air to take flight could be made a bit more snappy, basically faster, to look a bit better.

quality stuff mate, i'll be looking out for more!

aghill

Hey Mungo.

Ive been having some problems with the wings. Your definately right about their "flatness". Maybe try do give them some more "volume", but im tired of those wings allready=)

About his lift-off, I wanted it to be slow to give the impression of weight contra the small wingspan (its physically impossible to lift such a big body with such a small wingspan). He doesnt jump into the air, he is lifted slowly by the wings. Maybe I got the momentum on the wings wrong.

But hey! I've animated a new little sequence. I had alot of fun animating this. I will surely make another try on his dance. Combined with some funny music, it would work alot better. crits are welcome=]

Hey I really like your animations, I don't know if u're still working on that vid with the tornado, but there is something missing compared to the first one. You hardly get to see his face and his expressions before he gets sucked in to the tornado. I really liked his face in the first movie and i'd think you could improve the second one if he looked in the direction of the camera some more.
keep up the good work

Matt
