Have you got a tablet? Any painting in photoshop is easier that way. After that, it's just grab the brush tool and start painting!:)

It sounds like you don't need to learn to paint, but rather how to use Photoshop.

1. Read the manual.
2. Get a book of Photoshop techniques if you still don't understand how it works.
3. Practise.

I have both and the tutorials are different, blending method different. But the concepts are bascially the same.

Thanks for replying Becky, I'm more geared towards using Painter however, I'm pretty adept at Photoshop. l was wondering which one would you recommend?. Is the new blending method the book talks and everyone here amazing?

If you are more geared toward Painter, then I would get his first edition "Digital Character Design and Painting". This one uses Painter 7 and comes with a CD with brushes, textures, patterns, paper files and some quicktime movies.

The second edition, "Digital Character Design & Painting: The Photoshop CS Edition" uses the Healing Brush as one of the methods for blending hard edges. He also shows you how to use the Patch Tool as another way of blending edges. Either one of these methods works quite well. There is also an optional method for blending edges, as well.

Cher Treinen-Pendarvis (the author of the Painter Wow series) has a new book the was released November 16th by Peachpitt Press called "The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book: Creative Techniques in Digital Painting". Which is supposed to show readers how they can use Painter and Photoshop with pressure-sensitive tablets to draw and paint with a computer. I have this book on order through Amazon, but hasn't shipped yet, so I cannot say whether the book is good or not.

It has a chapter on photoshop, painter and tablet basics for artists. Which has lots of info on configuring the tablet driver to photoshop and painter. There is a section on customizing brushes for both programs and drawing and tablet exercises.

There is also a section on tone and modeling, on blending, on strokes to build tonal variations, and much more. I don't want to be long winded. But I can say the book is very thorough.
