Hello. I am using Mentalray in Maya, and have been trying to get specular highlights using
indirect lights bounced back from a wall, but I can never get specular highlights when illuminated by indirect lights. Am I having wrong settings? All I get is clayish diffused
surface.

Thank you.

Indirect lights, by definition have no direction to them, therefore they cannot create specular highlights on a surface since they are not associated with a opint in space or a particular direction vector.

You should use spotlights or pointlights if you want specular highlights, or a reflection map; after all a specular highlight is simply the reflection of a lightsource.

Hope that helps,

Andrew

Thank you very much for such a quick response!
Your answer saved me a couple of hours for trying to figure out how I would be able
to get specular highlights with indirect lights.

Gracias!
