need help on how to render in houdini with mental ray, I have mr in maya 6, or do I need to have standalone mr for it?

I think you can use the Mental Ray version that comes with maya for Houdini but you need the full Houdini not the Apperentice Edition . and here are some tuts on writting MRay shaders : http://www.techimage.co.uk/products/houdini/houdini_tutorials.html

i have read those tutorials an they are great
so i need houdini comerciall an stand alone mr?!

Houdini Commercial for shure but i think it should work with the MRay version that comes with Maya .

Mental Ray for maya is a plugin renderer. It is meant to render only Maya scenes by translating them into the .mi format, but as far as i know, it cannot directly render using the .mi format. Which means you are out of luck unless you want to use an exporter to translate your houdini files to .mb/.ma
But as Maya's implementation of MR is rather flaky, you would probably be better off just using the standalone version.

Goon is right. Maya mental ray is for Maya only. I tried to figure out how to use it on my XSI rendergarden but gave up. I keep hearing great things about mantra.
