I am trying to paint a bit in photoshop, but i find my shades and tones to become spotted or blotchy. I am trying to find a more smooth way to paint in photoshop, but i am not seeing any at the moment. Is there anything i can do to keep my tones from becoming blotchy? Or at least is there a particular setting i can use to smooth them out?

Do you use soft edged brushes? Try also using the smudge/blur tools.
Also assuming you have a tablet, try to make pressure control the opacity.

I am using all 3.

But my smudges don't seem to make a clear or smooth transition between colors or tones. The smudges just smudge the blotches and not really blend the colors.

Just for giggles, use the freehand lasso and select a small area that you'd like to test this on (maybe you should paste that section into a new layer first). Then use the eye dropper to put those colors you see on the screen (the colors you want to blend) onto your gradient tool. Then fill the selected area with your gradient.

Is that the kind of blend you're talking about? Or are you talking about the blending features such multiply, overlay, hard light, hue, etc.?

I hope I've at least given you an idea about how you want to proceed, but let it be said that perfect blends are rarely found in nature.

Well i mean blending 2 colors together with something like the smudge tool. I never seem to get a good blend between the two colors i am trying to mix. The mix usually comes up swirled, spotty or jagged. Just not smooth at all.

Thanks for the idea though, i will try it out.
