Title: Cohabitation
Name: Philip Straub
Country: United States
Software: Painter, Photoshop

Another Concept painting for my little book project. This particular piece explores the idea of 3 civilizations coexisting with each other as they evolve.
I hope you like:)

Looks good Phil, although the distinction is not very clear to me, at least between the medium to advanced civilisation. Maybe some realy huge constructions (and different design style) hiding the background horizon, and a bit less smoke-mist in the midground, would do the trick better.
I like the concept!

...man you're awesome. this piece looks very different from your other works that we're used to seeing (mostly because of this daytime realistic lighting i think)... and similar in the way you usually seem to make the architecture in these fantasy/floating cities. this one really stands out to me because everything is so developed and finished looking even though you've left some brush marks visible (which works very well here too). I love how this city looks like it has really come to life with all this work you've put into it!... the masses of people are a nice touch as well... can't wait to see your next.

Dennik: Agreed...the distinction could be clearer......and is in the pages that follow. Thats the trouble in showing only one painting from a story that is sequential. I should have been more clear in my description...this is the beginning of the civilizations creeping in on each other. Thanks for the crit:)

Hard to say...I worked on it off and on when I had a some free time. Maybe 25-30 hours....some of that time trying to figure out the character of the different architecture. Too really refine the perspective and details I could probably spend more time on it...but its still concept art at this point.

Thanks for the comment:)

Fantastic job, Philip. I agree with zzzak, looks quite different from your other work, and, I like this one better (although the last piece you posted here was awesome). Depth is great, golden colours are wonderful, and the smog looks really cool in my opinion. (Hmmm...perhaps I can use this as inspiration for my GSO entry...)

Very nice, I love the structure under construction on the left had side and the way the buildings in the main cluster vanish off the top of the image!

Nice work! Lots of detail, good palette, very cool. The ellipses on your domes are throwing the perspective out - a little clean up on those would help I think.

Well done!

agreed....the elipses are a little funny. Final Painting will definitely be refined in that area as well as a few others.

hey phillip. i really like this one. mostly because of the people you have in the scene. it gives a sense of life to the piece which is a bit different from your usual stuff. i dunno, like you have birds and trees and stuff in your other works along with planes and stuff, but when you throw humans in there, it's easier to connect to it. cool stuff, keep on postin =)

Now that I am past how unbelievably awesome ppl cat create art in here... I am able to take in the value of the actual piece of art.

i think this work is really awesome because, to me, there is a mood of futuristic civlization in a crowded city and it just makes me feel all weird and tingly inside, like when i watched the matrix or aeon flux. i just like the subject portrayed in the scene.

Very nice work. I like you r color scheme alot. The only thing that's "killing" it for me is the perspective. It's not correct and consequently throwing the picture off. Notice the domes in the middle of the picture? The elliptical perspective on them is off. I run into the same problem myself, especially when I try to "eye ball" it. It's something that has to be approach technically to get right. Here's a good reference guide. http://www.drawthrough.com/tutorials/index.htmlOver all, Very nice job!!

This piece caught my attention. I'm not an avid poster because of my heavy work load but I had to give you props on this creation. The lighting and smoke effect added to your piece is fantastic. The attention to detail with the people walking and flying ships inspires me to push my abilites even further. Though looking at this and being unfamiliar with your work, it was hard for me as a 1st time admirer of your work to distinguish which archtectual designs goes with and given race. They all seem to intergrate nicley with no general distinction between the 3 races. If this was your intent then good times. Thank you for sharing your art with us.

Big fan of Cities myself, this has a very nice distopian feel to it, kind of postindustrial, not quite the future, but certainly not the past either.

Beautifully done.

Actually after getting into this I realized that what I should've done is created a block model for the piece and then go from there. In defense of the painting and my approach to it...it is "Concept Art" and so I wasn't looking for absolute perspective perfection...To me, concept art is about defining the "concept" of the piece and a little perspective imperfection here and there is acceptable....but that is me, and I could be wrong:)

Now if this was a matte painting...well I'd be in trouble.:)

Great observations!

Thanks for the post Phil, something I noticed and was wondering about is how within the focal point of the image its almost as if you've composed a bubble/lense form (blur eyes and its seen clearly), is this a device you use consciously? I find it intersting the way various artists achieve results (such as creating focal points, depth etc) but in ways particular to their unique stlye.
Cheers,

Hey Phil - sweet! It's beautiful and it certainly looks polluted enough for the realistic future...

I'm guessing the cohabitation is between the circular-roof people, the pointy-roof people and the sky-scraper dwellers. Reminds me of being in Akko where you could see the church, mosque and synagogue all from one location.

he he...now that might be a bit of a conflict of interest since I'm one of the judges:)
Re GSO challenge, it would definitely be a contender otherwise...

The Dark Mammal: Thanks man....I have a few more images on CGTalk..and well, a ton on my website so check um out. As far as the integration of the 3 races...at this point in the story its subtle...images that follow really show the distinction:)

InTheCity: Thanks...I love my cities to...going back to organic stuff for awhile though...I'll post them here soon.

Enayla: Thanks Linda :)

krazeyhorse: what...you don't like my name for the piece:)..yeh it is a little strange..he he

criminal, Bartosz, ???: thanks

Nativeflame: Yes...focal point something most good art has....well, it is conscious ...and I do set up scenes in a way that leads the eye to where I want the viewer to look. I achieve this by saving the most detail and refinement for the focal point and leaving the other areas bit looser...so the veiwer looks past them. I usually place a highest point of contrast or lightest area in the focal point as well. I use perspective (not in this piece though) to lead the eye too. Make sense?

Thanks for the kind words....and good eye too...the circular roof people, the round roof people, and the sky scraper dwellers all living happily together...for now...muuuwwwwhhhaaaaahhaa.

The GSO art that is being created is incredible....I don't think I would stand a chance..but thanks:) Happy T-day

I like the way you paint a lot... the place I live now has similar color schem around jungle of building, and I might try to paint them sooner or later...
Oh, one thing -it is just my taste...- I may change if I dare, would be moving the air control tower (or something else for) at the laft side of the picture... or I will put bigger aircraft as the foreground object... again.. this is just my taste...
Great works, I enjoyed very much...

Looks good Phil, although the distinction is not very clear to me, at least between the medium to advanced civilisation...
I like the concept!
Despite the fact that this is a very strong piece of work... I have some problems with the way the concept has been delivered.

In my mind, I picture 3 civilisations as being more different than the advent of using skyscrapers and domed architecture. As regards spaceships and pedestrians... people have cars, but you still find the same individuals walking the streets (if only to get some air). Russia, Spain, Japan, all have architectural properties that are similar to your presentation of a mixing of Civilisations. I'm not saying what you have done is wrong... I'm not that arrogant, but what I am saying is that the brief description you have given (for someone who loves your work) lives up to more than this piece has provided conceptually.

The fact that I have only picked up on 2 civilisations is a bit weak of me aswell (I did see the scaffolding type construction thing on the LT side of the image, is this No. 3). It looks good, but could still be linked to the Sky-scrapers in some way...

Technically wonderful, I loved the dramatic golden glow you passed on to the retreating metropolis. Shouldn't some of the sunlight stretch into the foreground of the piece aswell though (only one dome, and a couple of half arches seem to be bathed). I can't see why the light would be obstructed from more.

Please understand, sincerely, not tongue in cheek, that I do love your work.

Well damn.....you're really studying my work...I DO appreciate that.

As I've said in previous posts this image is "the beginning" of the civilzations creeping into each other. The images to follow in the book define the seperate civilizations much more clearly. All this painting really is is a set-up shot for what the city was before it becomes something else. So....in retrospect I probably shouldn't have mentioned the 3 civilizations thing without showing the supporting images, since everyone keeps commenting on it:)

I do appreciate all the critiques on this though...I may rethink a few things in the imagery.

Best,

Phil
