View Full Version : Can anyone give a tutorial on rigging
WeirdoStudio 11-21-2004, 07:45 AM Is there any free tutorials for rigging in Messiah? I know this is a big order to feel, but recently i have been going nuts over whether to choose motionbuilder 6 or messiah, but the documentation that could sway my decision isn't there.. I just wish that i could figure out which one would suit my needs better.. I love to model no matter what the program, but when it comes to animation i'm just not sure of which package suit me better.. I'm a little more steered toward messiah as it has a fantastic renderer which i have seen several examples of.. ANy suggestions would be great fellas.. Help me get my head in the right direction please..

The main advantage of messiah over Motion Builder is the ability to easily create your own custom rigs which means a lot more flexibility, but on the other hand also a certain understanding of rigging is needed. The tutorials that come with the documentation (the documentation also comes with the messiah:animate demo, so you can check that out) cover things like rigging legs, arms, fingers and faces. Also have a look at www.zoogono.com (http://www.zoogono.com/),
they have some links to rigging tutorials (free and commercial).

Yes, I would second that. Motionbuilder is good if you mostly want to use the predefined rigs and standard deformations (bones and morphs). It is also cool for Motion Capture data.
If you want to be really flexible, messiah is the way to go. The unrivaled setup mode, very easy and fast expressions, lots of different deformation effects (spline deformation, bone dynamics, melt, bloat...) and a superb renderer built in if you invest in studio.
If you decide for messiah, be sure to check out Joe Cosmans tutorial cds - not free but the best way to get into messiah at top speed. This guy rocks!

One way to rig is presented by this video tutorial

by Mike RB
But check first the introductional video tutorials at the PMG site

Thanks for the reply guys..
Thomas_Helzle that is what i'm wanting.. i really don't have a need for motion capture stuff at this point, i just really want to build my own rigs and have a program that i can animate in with a lot of flexibility.. I wish i could see the video by Mike RB but for some reason it keeps crashing on me...

WeirdoStudio:
Then messiah should be right for you.
If you haven't done that already, download the demo version of messiah:animate 5 here
(right side of the window):
http://www.projectmessiah.com/x2/downloads.htm
The demo includes the docs.
Give yourself a bit of time since some concepts are different in messiah from other tools, but after taking some initial steps, it is very easy to learn IMO.
You may want to search this forum for stuff from MikeRB, he documented him learning messiah with several videos if I remember correctly, not only the one already pointed out by Dennik - but I no longer have the links.
Do you have the correct codec for the video? Look through the threads, it may be DivX, XviD or the (free) techsmith codec that is often used for screencaptures.
SergO also announced a video of him rigging and I am sure the future will bring more and more such stuff.
And now for some self-advertising :) -> if you want, you can download the full documentation for my AoN:Studio shaders (link see my signature below) that has 50mb of information, tutorials, images and videos and may give you some insights into how messiah:studios renderer works - even if you don't plan to buy my shaders (but you are welcome to do so of course ;) )
Cheers and hopefully "welcome to messiah"

WeirdoStudio, the video loads fine with the latest media player. Maybe you should try updating in case it works.
