i recently decided to try out Painter 7 and i was pretty happy with my results. this is a freehand portrait of Natalie Portman done solely with the airbrush and then i added a light layer of noise in Photoshop. any comments/critiques are duly appreciated as this is my first posting on the forums with works attached.

the full-sized image is here (http://www.mothermushroom.com/images/gallery/digital/natalie_Full.jpg)

Good work. Corel SERIOUSLY needs to make a new interface for painter (of course have the old one in there as well, in preferences.)

PADME PADME PADME!@#

that is awesome, an you couldnt have picked a better person to paint!

1 crit I have is i reckon her hair line is too far back

Wow, that is indeed very good. I'd have to agree with the "receding hairline", it seems to jump out. I can't find any other faults really....

Well, perhaps the part above the upper lip where it meets the nose(below the nostril)... And she seems to have like "bags" under her eyes, they look a bit too dark...

It's really freakin' good. I really like how the lips and the hair came out.

thanks for your guy's input. oddly enough, in the picture that i used for reference, her hair is pulled way back. maybe the poor girl is suffering from male pattern baldness  in fact, maybe that's why she always wears those enormous headdresses in Star Wars! :p

again, thanks for the comments.

sweet! looks cool.
If I should nitpick though, I havnīt seen your reference photo, but while the rest of the picture looks very much photoreal , her nostril stands out just a little bit. I think itīs a little bit to fast contrast ramp.. And another thing is her lips looks a little bit jagged and dry, looks a little bit creepy, especially (whatīs that part called in english...) where the topp lip and bottom lip meets.

just my 2 cents, anyway sweet work, keep it up!

That's a truly admirable rendition. The way you captured the lighting is wonderful.

A slight crit would be that the face looks ever so slightly long. That could just be me though. I think the hairline ner the temple is a bit course, but I realise that the piece is not an overworked one...and that it is how you intended it.

I'm envious of your painting skills.

"Yousa datsa isa supa" _In the immortal words of our favorite character...Jar Jar..

Fantastic render!

Quick Crit...and it could because one of my eyes is lower than the other but...

Shouldn't her eyes be set slightly lower on her face or maybe the line of her cheekbone needs to be higher? The forehead coming up around the eyebrow area...it doesn't look like she has much of one...maybe it's the angle..I don't know..other than that excellent work!

i love the style, its so realistic...i wish i was as good as that. but on the other hand, i'm more interested in 3d - but that's just my personal preference.

but, nevertheless, its still superb work!!

simply incredible  my word man you have some mad skill with that wacom.

The nostrils are a bit dark, but not overally distracting, what's a lil more distracting is the darkness inbetween the creases of the lips... but it's a minor thing...

awesome job [plugged]

way excellent man . . .

tho indeed the darkness behind the nostril and the darkness between the lips could use some tweakin but IT IS HER allright

awesome work. well done.
i agree with the nostril crits. the nostril is a tad dark but to me the shape is to uniform and the edge is to hard. even if its sopt on with your reference image i say fudge it alittle and check the results.
again great stuff.

Dude, this is an absolutely gorgeous painting!
The only thing that slightly bugs me is the roots of the hair that don't really blend in.

Great work

I didn't read the whole thread, but i hope you credited the photographer you obviously based this painting on?

Having read the thread i see you did acknowledge you based it on a reference image.

Did you trace it, or paint it by hand based on the reference photograph?

haha i never noticed this

i bumped her back to the modeling stage, cause i didn't really like how she looked from the front view... so i restart texturing again.

EDIT: oh yeah... when i first saw this the first thing i said was "photomanip" ...:D

okay i don't want to be an ass here, but something's been bugging me.

do you have any semi-complete pictures, or perhaps you did it all on different layers, so maybe you could post some seprate layers or even show us how you did it? cause right now i sort of feel (and again, if i'm wrong, i'm really sorry) that this is not a painting at all, and you just tweaked the photo.

i did this using the photo off natalieportman.com and photoshop 7, using mostly smudge, a little bit of liquify, dodge/burn, blur, and some high-pass filters. now, its not exactly like yours, because i only spent a few minutes.... but here it is

thanks for posting the image nahaz. i did indeed base it off that. unfortunately i don't know who took that photo (found it online). i didn't trace it, i had a window of it open and i just drew. :)

i just refreshed and saw your message wgeddes. i am seriously confuzzled. i don't know whether to be offended or flattered. i definitely drew this. Here's a bunch of screen dumps of the various layers i used (kind of a collage). If this doesn't convince you i don't know what will. i'm not going to post the .rif for obvious reasons.

Usually a digital painted image of a well known individual is done with a reference to an image sometimes traced sometimes just referenced.

A good way to check for tracing is in pshop to comp a layer of the image or ref photo on top of the other using a difference filter lining or scaling certain parts to check match. The eye area lines up easily, and the nose and mouth can be aligned with some scaling, but overall the entire face connot be lined up without some scaling of the whole ref image. The hair is obviously only partly derived from the photo and created as the manufacturer of the image says.

the dif image can't show much unless you do it yourself and move the top layer.

layer on/off

wedge
09-16-2002, 07:28 AM
you can always use something like liquify to move portions, in order to hide the true source... it can be done, but i dont believe pants did it, i now believe its painted, and very good too :)

hehe, wires. hopefully one day i will be able to post wires of something like this. :)

as far as all the other crits go, a recurring theme of too dark has cropped up. i just realized when i initially posted this image i was on another machine and so i added an adjustment layer so i could better match that monitor. it has since dawned on me that that monitor wasn't really calibrated right, so i have gone back and removed the adjustment layer. hopefully it's a little better but i still think the nostril might be too dark, too quick probably. lemme know what you guys think. thanks again for the replies.

Ive been looking at it again and thought Id mention the following. The nostrils look a bit "hard" round the edges, and slightly large.

The lips look a bit dry and too cracked.

Still a fine piece of work though.;)
