View Full Version : Animating Volume Light
Animare 08-26-2002, 03:55 AM How would you create an effect as though the light rays int he background are 'rotating'? I have tried rotating the light and animating it but it doesn't seem to make a difference?
Thanks

I would suggest U to do it with an animated lightmap .Or U can place an object in matte-shadow in front of your light and animate it .I don't know exactly what kind of rotating effect U wan't to make, but I think those methods could work........:)
Please tell me if I missed the point, after all it's monday morning

Monday morning :) I understand.
Yeah you've got the right idea, basically like you know blizzards logo something like that how the volume light spreads in and out and in this case something like the light rays moving in and out of visibility its really hard to explain...umm have you seen the world of warcraft trailer where in the jungle there are like rays of light breaking through the tree tops slowly...something like that but I will play around witha lightmap?(what exactly does that do) I haven't messed around with lights that much. Appreciate your help.

Selct your light, in the modify panel, in light parameter, there's a box for Projector map .In there, U choose like a noise or a smoke map, and U animate it .After that, U try every options till you have something U like .I used that method to make water reflections on a boat and it worked perfect.........Maybe U can try animate the phase of a noise projector map .Glad I helped...:)

That projector map yielded some awsome results, if I could trouble you with one last question. Thanks for your patience with my newbieness so far.
Is there anything like the projector map etc to break up the actual volume light, the same way the model is breaking it up in this pic, so like a map or something to break up the volume light from source(instead of using objects etc) Or would that be the matte shadow object technique you were referring too..
An example would be like the batman signal? Is it possible to do that with a volume light and map.
Thanks again

What I usually do to make something like this is that I create a plane, apply the noise map on this plane, put the object I wan't in front of it .Animate the object and the bitmap, and then I render the plane and use the AVI I just rendered as a projector map .Maybe there's an easyest way to do it, but this one works quite right .And don't forget to apply a matte-shadow on your object.......Post the pic once you'll have the effect right, I'd like to see it......good atmosphere

Cool I'll give that a shot and drop you a line with some of the results, thanks for all your help.

In the noise group, set "Noise On" on and change the parameters to what you need. Then set "Link to Light" on: this will give the light feeling of rotating when you rotate the light in the viewport with the MAXs standard transform tools. And, yes you will get what you want. Also if you dont want the noise to change appearance of the light, give the "Size" a small value to make them dust particles not the clouds of noise.
