Hi there. I'm new to max and i am teaching myself how to use it for architectural modelling and visualisation. My question is to do with modelling walls in max and applying materials to them. Basically, I am able to model walls by extruding splines from a plan outline but i do not have a clue as to how to apply different materials to the external and internal faces (eg brick and plaster) - can anyone please help me?

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks in advance

well the very basic way is:
-Open the mat. editor (M)
-Select the faces(in perspective viewport) that you want to have the brick texture on.
-In the material editor, select one of the gray spheres. Then theres a button in the mat. editor on the bar right below the spheres. (It might be on the far left of the bar. It will be an arrow pointing at a sphere.) Click that and select a brick texture from the material library.
-Hit ok
-The texture should now be wrapped around the sphere
-Drag it to the selected faces.

For the plaster side:
-Do the same exact thing as above, except choose a plaster material to apply and use the inside faces ofcourse.

More Complex Way:
-UVW Unwrap the wall
-Export the image using Texporter (Google it, i forgot the site... BUT ITS FREE!!)
-In your paint program, put the brick and plaster texture in the right area using the unwrapped picture as a reference.
-Save as a whatever (.jpg, .bmp, or .tga)
-Go back to 3dsmax and open the material editor
-click a grey sphere in the material editor.
-next to the diffuse slot there is a small square (the diffuse slot with a colored box next to it), click the square.
-Double-Click bitmap from the box that comes up
-Browse for your image select it and hit ok
-the sphere should now have your image wrapped around it.
-then drag the sphere to the wall.

OK, of course the second one is going to produce better results. (Depending on how big your wall is)

If you still need more help, PM me or just talk to me on AIM. My S.N. is: JiggyFli

Good Luck.
