Title: Dragon Magazine Cover - Goblin Attack
Name: Howard Lyon
Country: United States
Software: Painter
This painting was done for Paizo Publihsing's "Dragon Magazine." This is on the current issue, #326.
I followed a fairly typical path for this one, doing small thumbnails, then color comps and then a full-size pencil drawing, scanned it in and then painted it in Corel Painter 8. I will use Photoshop at times to create my layers.
I usually make a layer for the background, foreground and then each of the characters. I find it gives me a nice versatility as I am working to change colors or the relationship of the characters in the design.

Great image, lyon. I like how you’ve used a slight angle to imply a sense of movement in the piece. The character designs are solid (although I find the sorcerer’s chest a little too "cut"), and you’ve got some nice color in there without having anything too overpowering. Excellent detail, lighting, and overall depth. I’m sure it’ll make a bang-up cover!

but there is some anatomic troubles...
the guy with magic power (the lighning) is a bit strange on torso...
the goblins/orcs are a bit strange ... some have really big head other not...

I think it's really a great piece of art.
Just a couple of question, maybe a little bit OT: how long did it take to complete it? How much are you paid for things like this? (more or less, not in detail, just to better understand differences between Italy and the rest of the world). I ask you these because i think this one is really a top benchmark.
Thanx!
G.
Urrgos - Thanks for the great comments and feedback. With the sorcerers chest, I was trying to go for very skinny, very lean and fit, but I don't think I ended up with the right feel of the muscle fibers overlaping the way I envisioned it. I am going to have to give it another go I think.
cultist - Thanks! Fantasy paintings are a blast to do.
I-NetGraFX - Daniel, thank you man!
ICM - Very cool. I haven't seen the issue yet. I hope that it printed alright. Sometimes it is hard to tell how the press is going to treat your image. How did it look in ink?
Neozoom - I had someone else comment about the flatness of the torso on the wizard. Is that what is for you too, or something else? I will take a closer look at it. Thank you.
AHMED-3D - Very kind of you. Thank you.
SystemId - Thanks!
Baybeestar - Cool. I have been trying to get more dynamic compositions and poses. I felt that this one work better than some of my past images on that level anyways.
Garma - Thanks for the response!
SpaceTik - Cool! I don't know if you noticed there in the background, the sihouettes of more goblins.
gawain - Sure, it took me about 8 hours to do the drawing and about 3 days of painting. The payment for work like this is really all over the place and there are a lot of factors. You probably won't get rich, but you can make a good living doing it. Like most art, you end up doing it because you love it. What a great career! Thanks for the comments and the questions.
I forgot to post these, here is the drawing and the cover scanned in:
