hi
been doing some digital painting practice and thought i`d post here......i`m not sure if it works or not, but i need the practice on the digital side of things so i hope you will give me some hard critiques to help me out.....i`ve used various references including one for the girl that came from robert chang`s website(lunatique), for which i got his permission to post......and some various ones for the background that i used loosely in bits and pieces and some of my own imagination.....to be honest i`m not so good at using my imagination to do this sort of thing really, one of the reasons i did it....i was looking specifically at the reflections on the girls hair, face and shirt....but crit me on everything please....it`s a kind of city on the horizon, maybe i need to define that more?

anyway, thanks

Very promising work you have there! ^^

I'm not sure how far you want to go with it, detail-wise, so I'll stick to rather generic comments.

The detail levels of the character and the background are different at the moment. If you up the detail of the character a notch, you'll end up in photo-real territory, while the background would need plenty more work to get there.

Character: Delicious colors and very nice material definition. I'm not sure about the green highlights in her hair though, since the rest of the highlights aren't greenish(?).

Background: You need to work more on it to make it match the character. You could end up having trouble if you've painted the portrait from reference and the background from imagination, since you'd lack comparable references. The tree is fine I think, but the water, the city and especially the sky need more work.

If you don't want to detail the city too much, a bunch of lights would help the viewer see that there are houses there. For the sky, definitely try to find some reference pictures with similar lighting conditions and work from those. The current clouds give me the impression that the city is burning(?). The upper part of the sky need to be a lot smoother, and (IMO) in deeper colors.

You have a very good start there though. If you detail it up, you'll have a very nice show piece. ^^

finally found some time to work on this a bit.....got rid of the dark clouds because they seemed to make it a little too dark and as remarked, they look like smoke clouds anyway.....and worked on the city skyline.....ghosted some towers in the background, don`t know if they worked or not....and put some lights in as well......may need more detail in that but wanted to get some feedback before i did any more work......leaving the character as is except to change highlights which i`ve roughly done at this point....and matching the background detail to it......working on the sea more next....
