If you just have a background audio to play, go look up the metronome track in the Track View, this will allow you to add audio to your Max scene (and export it to). Otherwise go learn a video editing software package as it will teach you what you need to know about adding multiple sounds to a finished video piece.

Since 1996-97, you've been able to use MIDI data to drive parameters in MAX. If you want even more control, Larry Minton wrote a plugin that adds more MIDI capabilities. I don't know the specific URL, but you could do a search on his name.
