Hi,

Maybe a bit off topic but several years ago I suggested the Wacom developers to make a stylus with a flat point. I find it not so intuitive to suggest a flat brush in Painter with a round tip. I always loose track which way is broad or narrow. The wacom people said it was an interesting idea but I never heard from it anymore. So I thought I would bring up the idea again in this area. Maybe there are some people overhere who think this would be a good idea and have more influence on the Wacom people ;)

It would suffice if Wacom is able to send stylus rotation info to softwares like Painter and for the software to deliver horizontal or vertical flat strokes depending on the rotation.

A flat stylus wound logically be acoompanied by a round one (for round brushes and pencils). This adds to the cost and actually inconvenience to the users.

The Wacom does send this information to painter. The direction of flat brushes depend on how you keep your pen. The pen would not be necessarily raise the price of the tablet. Even now you can buy separate pens like the stroke pen and the airbrush pen. It's even handy to have different pens as Painter remembers which pen used which brush type. Most of the time I switch from let's say pencil to brush by switching pens. It's just an idea for an extra possibility for people who would like to have this choise. But as I see there's not much interest in here, Wacom probably made the right choise, maybe only a very small usergroup would buy this pen.

Agree with you that a flat pen would not add to the cost of the tablet if the pen is marketed separately.

If Wacom send the pen rotation info to Painter, then Painter obviously does not make use of it. When I first got my Wacom, I certainly have tried to rotate the pen around trying to get a vertical flat brush but that did not work. For whatever reason, Painter seems to think that canvas rotation would serve that purpose already.

Even if Wacom develops a flat stylus, Painter would need to change to make use of it.

Which Wacom tablet do you own? The grapphire series does not support tilt. If I use a flat brush and hold the pen towards the bottom of the tablet I get a horizontal flat brush. If I hold the pen sideways I get a vertical flat brush. Is this what you mean or do we misunderstand each other? :)

I am using a Graphire hence the difference in view. Thanks for taking the trouble to clarify.

sure and than a printer that sculpts the impasto I guess :D
If possible with the smell of real oilpaint.

But seriously, I'm a bit surprised that I seem to be the only one who forgets whether the brush is vertical or horizontal or somewhere in between. Maybe I could experiment a bit with a spare tip. Glue something flat on it or so.

I'll let you know if I get something working.

Happy painting,
Arjo.
