View Full Version : Something similiar to Maya's Shatter?
Faeroon 08-25-2002, 10:15 PM Hi,
I'm curious - is there something similiar in Max
to Maya's shatter command? I've tried PBomb, but
I need something that splits my model into solid
pieces and not into a bunch of flying faces
I really hope someone can give me a hint here.
Cheers

Hey..
i dunno how maya shatter looks like..
but in max u can make so the object explodes in solid pieces
u can use pbomb with parray..
u spacewarp bind the pbomb to the parray..
in the parray options pick the exploding object, choose Mesh on Viewport Display, and in Particle type choose Object Fragments
works here.. =D

You can set a minimum face count for the parts.
That way you have parts of multiple faces instead of single polygons flying around.
Still looks like crap though :)

Morning *yawns*
@Marcel: Yep... still looks like... yep *G*
@gundog: Thx for the link mate!! Gonna test this right away.
@Zytrox:
What the maya shatter command looks like?
It takes your object and after you've set the settings
he "shatters" the object into xx pieces, but they're all
together as the original object until you put a force on it.
The pieces are solid - one piece might run trough the entire
model and another one could be just a tiny edge, but the
good thing is that those parts get real volume 'cause Maya
gives them inner fragment parts with a seperate shader.
Here's something that I've done for a contest here @CGTalk
long ago - look how the temple was shattered, but not into
flying faces but into solid pieces.

I really hope FRAGILE can do something like this
If someone might know about a hint or something - let me know :)

Hey..
Faeroon,
heres something quick i just did with a sphere, parray and gravity..
http://www.3dluvr.com/zytrox/parray.gif
it starts with the original model, then it breaks it into solid pieces, not flying faces like bomb does... :)
putting in the correct settings would make it look good.., u can make it so it doesnt spread.. then u could just throw it into a deflector and each part would start breaking
i think that trying it with a more complicated model would look good ;)

@Zytrox:
Hehe - nice sample but take a closer look:
The sphere is hollow :thumbsdow
Maya breaks an object into pieces but holds
in mind that this thing isn't hollow - it has in
inner volume and that's why it looks like this:

Dont know if it can be done this way in Max
Cheers

Their is an action in Reactor called Fracture which allows an object to dynamically break apart into peices like a real object, the only problem is that you have to design all the peices first, it won't break the geometry up automatically for you, which I think is what you really want right? I was looking at that fragile plug-in link, and downloaded a movie, it doesn't appear to break the object into solid chunks, it looks like it dynamically breaks apart on the surface of the geometry into pieces, like a chocolate bunny that has a thick surface, but isn't solid all the way through. I could be wrong because I only downloaded one demo movie.

In Max you can adjust the thickness of the fragments. I don't know how it would look but you might want to try setting the thickness really high, so that the object appears to be solid when it breaks.

Yeah, I think he knows that. He wants a more realistic fracturing, like cracks that travel through the object's volume three dimensonally leading to seperate whole pieces that have nothing to do with the geometry on the surface. LIke a real life kind of thing.

Hehehehe... I seem to have let go a lil' avalanche into
the land of max ;)
It's not that my life relies on that thing, but I'm a Maya user
and just tested Max this week and recogniced that this
shatter thingie is really hard to acchieve and I thought it could
be wise to ask all the max-geniuses here @CGTalk.
Didn't know that this thing is really that hard to do - just thought
that I knew Max to little :D

I think the differnce is more about how this effect is normally achieved in other packages. MAX tends to do it with particles and Maya uses a script to actually modify geometry and apply it to a dynamics simulation. Unfortunately the particles in MAX haven't changed since 1997, so the fragmentation control is very limited. The gap has been filled with 3rd party tools like Particle Studio and Thinking Particles, both of which have much more capable fragmentation tools.
