I'm looking into purchacing new workstations for myself and the people that work with me, and I was wondering which would be better to use with Cinema 4D: 1 Athalon 64-FX@ 2.8ghz, or dual Xeons with Hyperthreading @ 3.0Ghz each. Which one would offer the fastest rendering times with Cinema 4D specifically?

And yes, I do need Windows machines :(

The Xeons will offer much better rendering performance and the AMD will offer somewhat better editor performance.

hmmmm....

Ok. Which would calculate dynamics and physics and such faster - the AMD I assume?
Rendering overnight is not a problem :)
...nor is over multiple nights...

I haven't seen a direct comparison but it's a fair bet that the AMD would be faster at Dynamics and such.

Ok. AMD it is.

...but dual processor rendering is so cool!!!
Our school has two Mac G5s and my tech teacher was kind enough to let me install C4D on one of them and it's incredable.

But anyway, I just need the stuff to calculate fast... ESPECIALLY cloth effects. they = slow.

FYI, the fastest Athlon 64 FX-55 only goes up to 2.6Ghz ... there is no 2.8Ghz model, unless you mean an Athlon 64 FX 2800, which is a cheapo $125 CPU that a dual Xeon 3.0 would roll right over performancewise without a problem, especially on the multithreaded rendering side. In terms of rendering, dual is always preferable - AA and GI is slow enough as it is.

Ok. It must've been 2.6GHz then. My bad. I know it was that killer AMD 64 bit one that owns Intel's face.

Either way, I think I'm probably going to go with that since I'm mostly concerned about on-the-fly calculations like Cloth, Dynamics, etc.
