What is the best rendering method to show off the details in your models? I have tried using vray with a solid color and HDRI, but it seems to wash out those details. would a simple scanline be the best option? note, this is an untextured model.

It's the deep shadowing effect that skylight's and domelights do that I think your asking about.

Most modelers who are not deeply into lighting use a dome light tool or skylight via Brazil, Vray, with a key light to help shape lighting direction and specular hits.

Some dome light tools by default have specular turned on which is what you don't normally want so uncheck your affect speculars if using a dome light or you'll get tiny specular hits on shiny specular objects.
