View Full Version : Above & Beyond - Vehicle & character- Figure2
Figure2 08-25-2002, 04:38 AM This is a repost of my entry after the server crash from 8/15.
The idea for my entry came from a sketch I had made some time ago of a guy stepping off a ledge holding feathers and flapping hi arms furously.
From there I worked up the idea for a bargain basement super hero with a strapped-on wing harness.

I began to conceptualize the character and work out some details. Once I was satisfied, I did the drawings for my modeling templates.

Once the templates were loaded I began modeling the character & wing harness in ElectricImage Universe Modeler:

Based on comments I got from my original posting, I made some adjustments to the stomach area and I worked out a more plausable mechanism that would operate the wings.
The motor is an air compressor. The pnumatic arms extend and retract through the action of a valve above the compressor which switches the air supply from the output (extension) to air intake (vacum action retracts pnumatic arm).
As you can see I have started texturing the model.

Hey Mark!
Good to see another Universe user in the challenges! "Twas about time I say.
I like your concept... and I particularly like the muscle definition around the biceps area. I know ubernurbs can get tricky.
If I can put in my 2c. worth... I am not really crazy about the texture from the waist down, but's that may be a 'style' issue.
The edges around the ab muscles are a bit rough, you might want to smooth it out a bit.
The face has a great look for the overall composition, but if you are planning any close-up shots, I'd work on the nose detail a bit...
cool wings! Keep it up.:bounce: :bounce:

Hi
Is the character model all UberNurbs? I'm impressed :)

Hi Greg,
I had some better ideas for the texturing but this solution is based on what I could do without having to spend a small fortune on plug-ins that would give me access to the UV space.

I'm still fudging with the stomach muscles.

Dr. Bob,
Yes, mostly. Most of the motor, the pnumatic arms and the supports that hold up the cross bars are also UberNURBS. I found modeling this way was less infuriating than the other methods.
